Great followup with some downfalls
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Diablo 3 is a great follow up in the series. The overall gameplay is spot on and the story is overall solid. If you've played a Diablo game (or any action-rpg for that matter# you have a general idea of what you're getting into here, and in those terms what it does it does well. That being said this review is going to focus more on what I see as the short comings of the game. Please note that this is not a negative review of the game, it is a lot of fun, this is more of a heads up of the more drastic changes made to the formula and how they affect the game. As it seems to be a trend in the gaming world lately, many aspects of the game have been over simplified #whether it's a lack of creativity on the side of the developers, or just this overall desire to draw a larger crowd - namely the non-gamers#. First of all in the past Diablo games you were given attributes, in this case strength, dexterity, intelligence and vitality. Each class starts with it's own unique spread of these attributes, just like previous offerings. The difference now is that when you level up the attributes are automatically distributed as opposed to getting 5 points to distribute as you see fit. This seemingly forces the class in the direction and role that Blizzard wanted that class to fit, rather than how the player wants to play it. Sure if you're a wizard you can load up on gear that specifically bumps strength if you want more of it to play more of a battle mage style, but then you limit the equipment you can use. Secondly the skill tree has been simplified. Instead of having a robust tree for every class and a limited amount of skill points to distribute through your journey, now you automatically gain the next skill just by leveling up, and are not able to level that skill up. The only freedom you really have is choosing the runes that go into a skill #which slightly alter the skill, for instance adding life leech#. This means that by level 100, two players with the same class will pretty much have the same character, save for their equipment. Also, a lot of these skills don't require any 'mana' to use, and rather work on a cool down timer. Boss fights now work as events. This is OK in the single player environment, however in multiplayer if you die you can no longer get into that boss fight and must wait outside until your friends either all die or complete it without you. What also doesn't help this is the new potion system, where you can have potions #in one slot only#, but they have roughly a 30 second cool down time. Most of the time you must rely on skills or health orbs dropped randomly by enemies to heal. Boss fights sometimes have health pools that automatically refill during the fight. I would have preferred they stick to the old potion formula and ditched the orb system. Scrolls have been done away with and now you have unlimited town portals and can identifiy objects just by right clicking on them. In multiplayer you can automatically teleport to friends using their banners, which means no one needs to send you a TP to get you to their location. Again this is just another way they've over simplified things. I still believe stocking up on scroll tomes and potions was strategic and fun. Mana also no longer exists, and has been replaced by class specific energy systems. In theory this is a great system, however I feel that it is poorly implimented. Once you gain your first ability that charges your energy you lose your weapon slot and for the most part, no longer actually use your weapon for the rest of the game #unless your skill uses the weapon in the animation#. Your energy gathering skill will use the damage from your weapons, so weapons DO still have a point, however the game here begins to clump two separate aspects into one. If, say, my generating skill did a specific damage, my weapons did a specific damage, and my consumption skill did a specific damage, and I had to alternate what I was using strategically based on the situation that would be a much better system. You can select 'elective mode' and equip your weapon to a slot, but with this system it serves no purpose. Blizzard has also removed any kind of offline gameplay. This doesn't greatly affect me as of right now, however I feel this greatly segregates the fanbase. There still are a lot of people who don't necessarily have internet access, or a cheap way of getting internet access in their area. Also if I'm out somewhere and have my laptop but no access to the internet I should still be able to play a game that I payed for. This isn't an MMO or strictly multiplayer game, so this omission seems to be a poor business decision. Beyond this the game plays exactly as you would expect it to and it is a lot of fun. The boss battles are much more epic than previous Diablo offerings. There are a lot of references to previous Diablo games which is great for veterans. Blizzard has put together a great game in the series, however overall I do feel that they tried to marry too many elements from WoW into Diablo. From a technical standpoint I would say that Diablo 2 still remains the top of both the Diablo series and the isometric action-rpg genre, however Diablo 3 should definitely not be overlooked. If you liked the series in the past or just like action-rpgs in general, be sure to check this one out!

Great Game, Shaky start up....
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If youre a Diablo fan or Blizzard fan, or heck RPG with a cool story, wowing scenimatics, and great graphics not just for your high end PCs. I must say I was a fan from Diablo 1, and Diablo II and the expansion had me even more, so its about time they sat down and made number III.... Some disappointing things however, is the classes, They are like copies of the old version without being the same. Like they wanted to be slightly different but still on the same page and do the same things in a way. And from my point of view, I like the way it was. I really miss the Necro, which is replace with a witch Dr that does similar things but not as cool, has a bear gut, and had to much caffeine, shakes like theres no tomorrow. Well kinda is said with the other classes, but all in all the graphics are sick, co-op is cool, auction house is new and having to connect to the battle net to play a single player mode sucks, but is understandable specially with the auction house being open to all the players so if youre playing single player or co op with your friends, you use the auction house kinda out of the game but its attached to your account.... the stats in this game are randomly generated, so getting a sword doing fire for a lvl 10 with say +12 str and +2 to health reggen finding another like that is unlikely and thats the basic gear in the first part of the game, so you can imagine getting more complex,

Fun and challenging for a while
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It's a fun and challenging game. There are overpowered items that can remove the challenge. However, after one play through on Normal mode, you have seen most of the content. You unlock higher difficulty modes (Nightmare, Hell, and Inferno) with each character separately as you complete the game. It is my exoerience you need better gear with every difficulty mode you play through. Somewhat unfortunately, the gear you need may not be available in the mode you are playing in. Often you must purchase gear from the in-game auction house (either using in-game gold you have collected, or with real money). There are 5 different classes (barbarian, demon hunter, monk, wizard, and witch doctor). You have (I think) 8 character slots to play with as you like. Each class has different attributes and skills, as well as some gear restrictions. It suggest you play 10-15 minutes of the first quest/act with eah class to find one that suits you. All in all, it's a fun game during the first playthrough. I find limited entertainment return as you play through the different difficulty modes. And the need to acquire better gear to compete becomes a grind. Lastly, there is no PvP, or at least not yet! I have no idea if it will be offered with an update.

Better than expected
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Better than expected. The difficulty is better (harder) and there are more mobs. The graphics are smooth, the interface is slick, the skills feel powerful. The only negative is at most a 1 week negative while they beef up their servers. I loved the beta, but the full game is tweaked to be even better!

The 3rd game of the Diablo saga lives to its name
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. And in the end of days, justice shall fall for the Diablo franchise. Diablo III continues the story with the same core feeling of its predecessors but adds up new mechanics and elements to the gameplay to make it much better. Blizzard listened to the players' feedback of Diablo II and adjusted many of the failing parts of the game effectively. From story to lore, through music and sound effects, the game is enjoyable and can run in many computers regardless of specs. While the engine could use a tune-in, especially in textures, it is reasonable considering all the years this game has been developed. While the game has great replayability, the difficulty ramps up unevenly through the 4 game difficulties which then demands the user to buy better gear through the Auction House. While this AH is good but not great, tis dependency can become a nuisance if you don't invest enough time to grinding. Overall, this has been my favorite game of the franchise contrary to what many "fans" may stake; it's a must-buy.

great game
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Blizzard has done their best to ruin a great game, no lan play, have to sign into battlenet, and the patches blowing things up. That beig said whats new Blizzard has done this to every franchise they own. It still didnt keep me from buying it the day it came out. Nothing really New about the game it is more of an extension of D2, but D2 was awesome. The new bits just make it a new way of playing the game, but dont really add much to the game. it is a good way to waste time and it feels good to be back in Tristam

Brings back the memories (GOOD)
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am a 54 year old kid at heart that played this series back in the day. It is an uncomplicated point and click killer that is easy to manipulate and very satisfying to play. Unlike games where you need to be a master of the keyboard simply to get your character to move, this one is able be played by virtually anyone. If you played the originals (20+ years ago) it stays true to the original form. I am quite impressed with the work the development team did. Unlike some, I feel that they captured the spirit of the original team amazingly well. If ever there was a game with replay value, this is it. I was sad when I could no longer boot up my D2 due to incompatibility with the new Windows. The server issues have not been near the problem with me that they have been with others although I got mine toward the end of May and they no doubt are working to solve the issues. I have played through with a Wizard and with very few problems. I do have a MacBook Pro Late 2011 and it has plenty of horsepower and, being a Mac, very few issues. On my system it is gorgeous and plays without a hiccup. If you played the old D1 and D2, get it. If you didn't get it anyway. You don't have to be an octopus of the keyboard. It is atmospheric and more fun than you may think. There is a reason why it is one of the most popular, if not the most popular games in history for the PC and now, Mac.

Diablo's Final Act
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a really cool game that looks great and is easy to play. It's also easy to join your friends in their game or yours. The game is very short and easy to beat, but they just released a new patch which lets user's control the monster's difficulty. I'd buy it if your friends play it or when the price drops.

Great game for Blizzard fans
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I loved Diablo 2 and played it for many many years, so when this finally came out it was great. I have already logged many hours and have a character in inferno difficulty, the new fourth difficulty level added after hell. It seems to me as though the first three difficulties were really not that tough, but inferno is quite challenging, which gives it a good twist and makes it much more difficult to complete the game. The auction house is a fantastic addition to the game, and makes it easier to find the right item for your character, as rare and legendary items can vary immensely. If you don't like repetitive game play then this isn't the game for you, as you essentially play through it four times and keep going back to try and find better items. However, if you enjoyed Diablo 2, or like games with mutliple difficulty setting where you continuously run through the world, then you will love this game.

Disappointing
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This could have been a pretty okay game. It offers very little new compared with Diablo 2, but that's probably what a lot of Diablo fans are looking for. Unfortunately, the new bits are largely bummers. Even single player mode requires you be connected to Blizzard's servers. Away from a network connection? Glitchy network? Problems with Blizzard's servers? Blizzard decides to apply a patch and take its servers offline for 8 hours? Sorry, you're out of luck. No Diablo for you. Also, an important part of roleplaying games is choosing your character's path. You decide to grow in certain ways and leave other paths behind. Not in Diablo. There are no permanent choices. One player's level 50 Monk has exactly the same skills available as another player's. You do choose which skills are equipped right now, but in a few seconds you can completely reconfigure your character. This does prevent people from accidentally picking a bad character build, but kills the RPG joy. Another joy-kill is the auction house (AH). Ignore for a moment that in the two weeks since launch it's been broken more often than it's worked: timeout errors, incredible delays and the like. But part of the fun in this kind of game is finding super-powerful items by chance. Now when you find a seemingly super-powerful item, it's almost certain that you can buy something far more powerful from the AH for pocket change. The story is reasonably interesting, and it's as fun as ever to wade through demon hordes. That's enough that I'll play through once, and maybe dabble around a little more. But the bummers outweigh the smiles for me. I would recommend this game to someone who's already a Diablo fan and wants to see the next stage of the story. For anyone else, save your money.

It's Diablo
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Please disregard all these fools who are down voting the game because it launched with some connection issues and DRM. Those issues are absolutely irrelevant to the game itself now that things have stabilized. It's Diablo. If you like level progression and loot you will love it. Nothing has changed in that regard. And that's really all you will ever need to know about this game. If you like killing thousands of monsters for thousands of items, buy it. It basically uses a login screen and chat interface that is identical to WOW. The only downside, again, is that you need an active internet connection the entire time you play the game, not just at startup. Luckily if your internet drops you will keep all the loot you acquired. It of course resets any dungeon progress back to the last actual checkpoint that it saved. But loot is saved when you get it, regardless of checkpoint. So if you have shaky internet I wouldn't buy this game. Period.

Great...but not perfect
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The story for the newest installment is Amazing, Blizzard has really outdone themselves. However, from one of the biggest gaming companies, I expected more from the servers. As a daily gamer I understand that when a game is new the servers will have problems keeping up, and Blizzard is doing a good job of fixing problems. I would love to give this game a 5 star but due to the lack of offline solo play the game loses some of its luster. While I love playing with my friends sometimes the server lags and crashes are just to much.

GOTY 2012 prime candidate
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This game has been seriously underrated by most people. The gameplay is the most immersive I have ever seen in any Diablo game, having played the entire series. The fact that there are 4 difficulties for the campaign adds a lot more of content to play through, and the 5 new classes are really cool. So what if it's not D2? That game is 10 years old, and the combat system there was quite primitive, and too much like WoW (too many spells/abilities to choose from). Things have to change eventually, and here they have. I believe it to be awesome even though it is still in Beta. For any RPG/Blizzard fan, this is your game.

Too little, maybe a little too late.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I remember when I got a copy of the original Diablo demo that was leaked so many years back. It was ground breaking and all I wanted to do was play it over and over. Diablo II carried the torch forward and the following expansions to me were equally as exciting. Diablo III could and I believe should be so much more than it is. I understand the reason why Blizzard did what it did - if it isn't broke, don't fix it! However, this saying doesn't always ring true especially with almost a decade between Diablo II and Diablo III. This is just my take on this game and I fell it worth mentioning that I am a Blizzard fan, but sometimes even your best friend can mess up and warrant some criticism. On to the review: Graphics - The game looks "nice" to be sure, but the graphics are a bit outdated. Remember, this game has been in development for quite some time and I think what happened is they took too long to release and outdated themselves. Characters - Shame on you Blizzard for not letting people create a character appearance. My 10 year old son sums this up best as I suggest he play a Barbarian, "I don't want to play as an old man!" and honestly I don't either. Take what they give you or leave it, but you will have some troubles getting into most of the characters. Game play - This is true Diablo and I think it was wise to leave this part of the game alone. It would have been nice to have the option to skip having to play to the game in "normal" mode before getting to the good stuff though. I think it is cool that Blizzard wanted to make the game accessible to new game players by toning the difficulty down at start, but for those familiar to the series it only promotes racing through the game to get to the good stuff. For those who do not know, Blizzard has stated that 70% of the gear and drops available in Diablo III are not even an option until you hit the next mode of game play. Audio - Overall the music and voice acting are right on par with Blizzard quality. Bottom Line: The game is playable and once through the normal mode I am sure will open up and offer new challenges. Overall the Diablo feel that was in the first two games of the series is missing and without being to create a character you can relate to, this only further takes away from the game. Diablo III for me is not a rush home after work because I cannot wait to play kind of game. For a game so long in the making, you would think it would redefine top down RPG games, but clearly does not do this at all. To do it all over again knowing what I know now, I would have saved the money spent on two copies of the game and a game guide and waited for it to drop in price, but it is what it is. Side Note - This was factored into my review, but is worth mentioning. Blizzard is having a lot of issues with the servers and they quite frequently are taken down or restarted for one reason or another. I'm sure the servers are overwhelmed and with each day passing, this should get better and better. You will notice some character lag from time to time as everything is stored on the server. Remember, to play the game you must be connected to battle.net and the issues they are having will effect your game play until they have it all fixed.

Another Classic
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.ok, I gotta say I love this game, from the none stop action, to the hunt for gear upgrades to the steady increase in difficulty as you go from normal to nightmare to hell to inferno. The setting and the music are wonderful and really immerse you in this fantasy world. Graphics are good for the genre,As well as replaying the game as each of the available classes, the random events and dungeons. The tradeskill and gold AH help to fill in slots where you can seem to get good drops. I just love it. Only con of the game is no offline single player mode but if you can get past that, I highly recemend this game to any action-rpg fans. or heck anyone that just loves a good game!

Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Game is great. Fun to play. Played it for a month straight and now doing school and bodybuiling. Once i am done with school will jump back onto this game. The story is good and the graphics are nice. I don't see myself playing this game as long as i did with diablo 2. This game just doesnt seem to be as addicting as diablo 2. However, great overall game.
