Package great, better than movie
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.A Bond film to forget. Has not seen in many years, since a kid, and was disappointed. Characters and settings are not best of Bond. Still, the Steelbook and package bonus materials are nice. Maybe more interesting than movie.

Sean Connery's last official Bond movie
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER is Sean Connery's last official James Bond movie (his very last Bond movie, NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN, was not produced by Eon Productions). Connery was induced to return to the Bond series with a then-record $1 million salary following his departure after YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE. DIAMONDS is a good but not great Bond movie, with its most redeeming feature being Connery, the definitive James Bond, returning after the dismal performance of George Lazenby in ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE. Also, John Barry's theme, sung by Shirley Bassey, is one of the very best in the Bond movies. Its three biggest negatives are excessive campy humor, the disappointing climatic battle scene on the oil rig and co-star Jimmy Dean. The oil rig battle scene was originally supposed to be a highlight of the movie, but due to the budget (i.e. Connery's huge salary) and a schedule problem, the battle scene was greatly reduced---removed were military frogmen who were supposed to drop from the helicopters and assault the oil rig making it resemble other exciting Bond battle scenes such as YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE and ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE. Also, the special effects were also affected by the budget constraints and were cheaply made so that the exploding helicopters are very cheesy-looking. This is certainly not expected from big-budget, mega-hits like the Bond movies. Lastly, the terrible acting by Jimmy Dean as the Howard Hughes-like billionaire Willard Whyte is a real blemish. A lesser negative is that explanatory scenes showing how and why Plenty O'Toole is found drowned in the swimming pool were deleted from the movie (the deleted scenes show James Bond and Tiffany Case in bed together as Plenty returns to their hotel room and finds Tiffany's address in her purse. She then visits Tiffany's home to confront her over Bond and is drowned by the two assassins who mistake her for Tiffany). Charles Grey, who stars as SPECTRE villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld, co-starred as a British secret agent in YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE. Bruce Cabot, star of the original KING KONG, stars as Willard Whyte's evil assistant. Lana Wood, sister of Natalie Wood, plays Bond Girl Plenty O'Toole (Lana and Natalie Wood starred together in John Wayne's THE SEARCHERS in which the sisters played younger and older versions of the kidnapped girl). Bruce Glover, father of Crispin Glover (BACK TO THE FUTURE), co-stars as one of the two assassins. Overall, DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER is one of the better Bond movies, and it is a must-have for the Bond fan who wants to see Sean Connery in his last official Bond movie.

An entertaining Bond adventure
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Diamond Are Forever is the last official Bond featuring Sean Connery as the classic hero, but he's no worse in it than in any of his other adventures. This film ably mixes the sillier, campier aspects of the series with the suave, action-oriented aspects that keep fans coming back for more. The film begins with Bond tracking down Blofeld to a clinic where the hero's nemesis is attempting to have another man assume his face, giving him a decoy. Bond apparently kills Blofeld (while giving off one of my favorite lines in the entire series, which I won't spoil for you). Bond is then assigned by MI6 to track down a diamond-smuggling ring in the United States, which leads him to the beautiful Tiffany Case and eventually reveals that Blofeld is indeed alive and behind another evil scheme. The fun of this film lies not in its plot details but rather just in all of the elements that make Bond popular with the public. It's fun, funny, action-packed, and smooth. There's not much to dislike here, though it's a lot less serious than the recent film, Casino Royale. This DVD features a picture and sound remaster, like all of the series in these recent releases, and the film looks and sounds incredible. It's unbelievable what they've been able to do with this technology in recent times. It's really great to be able to see the films this way at last. This is a fun entry in a very enjoyable series. I recommend it to anyone who likes Bond.

Sir Sean's entertaining Bond return
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Following George Lazenby's abrupt departure from the Bond franchise after filming OHMSS, United Artists surprised everyone by getting Sir Sean to play Bond for a 6th time in this film, which was more 'fun' (and, therefore, more financially successful) than its predecessor. Bond is tracking the breaking up of a diamond smuggling ring, with the help of one of the smugglers, Tiffany Case (Jill St. John). The trail eventually leads to his enemy Blofeld (Charles Gray). The movie loses some momentum during the climatic battle, but, happily, picks up in the film's final sequence when Bond deals with Blofeld's henchmen Mr. Wint & Mr. Kidd (Bruce Glover & Putter Smith, respectively). Overall, this was a fine Bond swansong for Connery (we'll politely ignore Never Say Never Again).

Maybe the Best of All
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As a film, 'Diamonds Are Forever' just might be the best of the 'Bond' films I've seen (unfortunately, I haven't seen them all). The film has two of my favorite characters of the entire series (Mr. Kidd and Wint), and it makes for some really fun moments. Widescreen with ample bonus, but die-hard fans will probably want to try and get the 2-disc special edition instead.

What can I say really, its james bond on blu ray.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Its a james bond film when they were still good and not a boring special effects movie with too much action and not very memorable characters. Even the older not so good JB films still had interesting characters and settings. The picture and audio were good, and it came with a decent amount of bonus content.
