Not sure how long it lasts since I always had it plugged in when using, but I used it (them, I bought 3 for more balanced light), I was using them for a couple hours at a time. It has 3 brightness settings. Low is fine, medium gives off enough light, but just know, in my experience, even when continuously plugged in, the brightest will still dim given enough time. But again, wasn't an issue and I'm sure if used for shorter duration and you need the brightest, it'll work.

Won't stay on.

It has been on the lowest brightness setting, so that shouldn't be a problem. I have tried using it while both plugged in and unplugged, and I get the same result.
