    Fun But With Flaws

Fun, but with its Flaws [Pro: DJI Action 2 provides excellent video, quality sound, and crisp images.] Video in adequate light is stunning. Despite it being the fall season, I was still able capture the vibrant beauty of my environment. Night vision can be hit or miss depending on the video settings you use. Also, the microphones work best when both modules are connected because the number of mics used are increased. Overall, watching the playback on my 4K television provided a bit of immersion from the first-person view. [Pro: The compact design allows for increased recording opportunities.] I had a quick and easy setup when I wanted to create a time-lapse video from my window. Because of the small footprint, the camera had an ample amount of space to record the sunset of the day. [Pro: The camera has a sturdy build with strong magnets to keep the it in place.] I wasn’t a fan of the magnetic design, but I changed my mind quickly after testing it in different scenarios. I feared the camera would fall and either crack or drift into an area where it couldn’t be recovered. However, the magnets kept a pretty secure grip. The magnets still aren’t my favorite design choice, but DJI executed it well. [Pro: I love the awesome stabilization modes.] The Action 2 stabilizes video effectively. With RockSteady, I was able to achieve great video clips while running and doing other activities with minimum shakiness. In other scenarios, the HorizonSteady feature did a good job of maintaining the orientation when I had to record in awkward angle. [Pro: The webcam and livestream options give the camera versatility.] Action cameras are designed to focus primarily on content creation. Being able to stream or use this product as a webcam provides overlooked, yet important value. I found myself very satisfied with the video output for when I needed to do a quick meeting or livestream event. [Con: It does get hot, but I kind of expected that.] The camera can get hot and shorten video recordings. However, if you change the “temperature threshold” to High then videos can be recorded at much longer lengths. The thermal control is bad, but not horrible. I can provide a little grace because the camera (and corresponding module) is small enough to fit 3 copies of itself on the face of my phone screen. [Con: The DJI Action 2 is sturdy, but needs special care.] Action cams are meant to be put to the test, but please exercise wisdom. I would highly recommend purchasing some type of armor for the body of the camera in case of an unfortunate event. I’m not sold on the magnetic system, but I’m even more concern because of the size. In conclusion, the compact design of the DJI Action 2 is both a gift and a curse. Because of its size, there are plenty of opportunities to capture unique and special moments. However, it’s miniature stature generates a lot of heat, but that is to be expected with such a small form factor. I enjoyed much of the content that I was able to record and view. Is it a “must-have”? No. Is it “could highly use”? Sure.

Works great. Haven't had any problems with overheating but don't film too long anyways. I also got a smallrig case for just the camera part which also helps with heat dissipation.

      Dear customer,

Thank you for your feedback. DJI Action 2 is designed to be compact and highly integrated. Therefore, when recording a high bitrate video for a long time, the camera unit emits much heat. We recommend that you go through the steps below to see if it helps.
      1. Lower the video resolution or frame rate.
      2. To record a high bitrate video for a long time, we recommend that you attach the camera unit to the front touchscreen module or power module.
      3. You can enable the 'Scrn Off When Rec' to see if it helps.

If you encounter any other issues, please contact DJI Support via http://www.dji.com/support for further assistance. Thanks for your understanding and support.

I returned this because the first couple times I used it, it would overheat within 3 minutes. I was on close to max settings, but still, I'd expect more time than that, so I exchanged for the GoPro 10, which so far is much better about not overheating and was about $30 cheaper and has a way better app.

      Dear customer,

We apologize for any inconvenience caused by this issue. DJI Action 2 is designed to be compact and highly integrated. Therefore, when recording a high bitrate video for a long time, the camera unit emits much heat. If the device prompts “Device overheated. Unable to record.”, we recommend that you go through the steps below to extend your shooting duration. 1. Lower the video resolution or frame rate. 2. To record a high bitrate video for a long time, we recommend that you attach the camera unit to the front touchscreen module or power module. Besides, you could use the DJI Action 2 Magnetic Protective Case to reduce surface temperature to optimize video recording. Innovative, with some flaws

The DJi Action 2 is a very innovative device, but it does have a few issues. The main concept here are the 2 cubes, one acting as the main camera and the other acting as an extended battery bank, storage expansion and extra OLED screen. When you attach the 2 cubes together magnetically, they become one device. Whether you hold the camera towards you or away, each oled screen provides you with a view of what you’re shooting, while automatically locking the other screen. The cubes are made of a nice metal housing, that makes them both very sturdy in case of accidental dropping or damage. The second cube also houses a micro sd card reader (class 3 or higher only), and it also acts a power bank to give you an extended battery life. When the 2 cubes are attached together, you also get a multidirectional mic array, that allows you to pick up sound all around you. I love the concept of the 2 cubes, but there is a catch to it…and that being, only the main camera unit is waterproof. So, if you plan on shooting under water, you won’t be able to use extended storage. This isn’t a deal breaker, because the main unit does have a built in 32gb of storage (22gb usable), but I see this more as a design flaw. I don’t understand why they didn’t add the SD slot on the main unit instead of the secondary unit. Also, the placement of the SD slot concerns me, as it’s directly below the powerful magnet, it makes me worried that it will wipe some or all my card’s data. With the magnetic plate you hang around your neck, you can tuck it under your shirt and the cube will stick to it making it appear as if it were floating over your chest. This is handy if you want to shoot some hands-free action shots. The magnets are strong enough, that I never had a problem with the camera falling off or detaching. The camera has some solid specs on paper, like shooting 4K at 120fps, built in image stabilizer, multidirectional mics, wide and ultra-wide angles etc. You can also use the cam as a webcam when you attach it to your computer. I tried this on my MacBook pro, and it worked great. It immediately detects it and uses it, no set up required. I decided to try out the 4k 120p first, and when playing back the footage I noticed a lot of lines running down the screen, I also noticed that the image was not staying in focus at all, it also would start to freeze up during play back. I then switched to 4k 60p and that made a huge difference, I had none of those problems anymore. The biggest issue that I have with the camera is how hot it gets after only a short period of time, and it gets hot. For this reason, you are only able to shoot for a certain amount of time before the camera shuts off on you. The camera does have a built-in auto shut off for when the camera gets too hot, and that’s right around the 3 or 5 mins depending on the settings. Overall, I love the technology of the camera. I think they did an amazing job with the build quality and the materials they used. Unfortunately, it comes with a cost…The camera gets too hot too fast, the micro sd card slot should’ve been put on the main camera. I did have issues when recording in 4k 120p, but the video was crystal clear at 4k 60p. With that being said, I do think it’s a nice action cam and would recommend it.

I’m a bit disappointed in this DJI product as own many devices (mostly drone related). I think many have covered the overheating issue, let me say this to DJI…fix this issue ASAP! This camera has so much potential in a world of capture but it misses the mark. The interface is decent, even with sausage sized fingers, I was able to manage/navigate the screens, they were nice, crisp, clean. I like that it comes with a few basic accessories to get started. It took a few tries to get it to connect with the app on my phone, I was successful eventually. I like the compactness of the device, but at the end of the day, my GoPro outdoes it and with that, this device was returned. I would try it again, with the next version.

As a longtime GoPro and Action Cam owner and user, I was looking for a device like this. It's almost a hybrid mixture of the GoPro form factor and versatility mated with the small size of the Action Cam. That's precisely what I wanted. As a drone owner, I had high expectations for the DJI Action 2 based upon my experience and satisfaction with DJI drones. Sadly, their latest device proved somewhat disappointing. The size is both its biggest strength and weakness. I’ll start with the positives. The size is fantastic. The single cube is perfectly sized for mounts and outdoor activities. It’s perfectly sized to work with accessories like the included lanyard or mounts without looking too goofy. The dual cube setup with the camera attached to the battery module seems a little awkwardly shaped and odd looking but is a lot more secure than it looks, thanks to side latches to supplement the strong magnetic fasteners. Both single or dual module formats are suitable for most outdoor activities. In addition to a second screen, the dual module setup provides additional battery power. The power module also houses the micro-SD card slot. If going with the single cube option, the internal memory will be the only storage option. The camera module is waterproof but the power module is not. Video quality is quite good, particularly by comparison to the quality of the still photos. Video is sharp, clear and the stabilization is top notch. Sound is also crisp, loud and clear. The camera remained level and shake-free under every circumstance I’ve encountered. I’ve ran with it, biked with it and hiked with it and the fall foliage footage was beautiful, colorful and radiant. Action footage was jitter free and enjoyably watchable. Photos weren't as impressive but still decent quality. Both video and still photos look great in bright lighting but both suffer noticeable degraded quality in low light. Low light quality is roughly on par with a mid to upper tier smartphone camera. Shooting options include still photos, video, time lapse and short clips. Now for the bad. This camera heats up quite quickly. It heats up to the point where it feels hot to the touch and ceases to function properly until cooldown. It doesn’t take much to heat up and runs so hot it limits the recording capability at higher bitrates. It’s not too disruptive if shooting brief segments in 4K but can be disruptive with lengthier filming at high bitrates. I tend to shoot in bursts anyhow because no matter how much I enjoy an activity, I find memories are best served in small doses. So it doesn’t affect me too much personally but I can see it being an issue for anyone who likes to film longer segments. We have two content creators and streamers in our household and I can't see this working for either. One is a travel vlogger and frequently films extended segments on trips. If doing an informational piece, short segments or lower quality may not be preferable. Another complaint is the app. It’s not the best. First, connectivity is confusing. The app requests Bluetooth and wifi but only seems to utilize wifi. I’ve checked the app, device and manual but can’t find where Bluetooth comes into play. Maybe it’s for accessories. I also frequently lose connectivity between the phone and camera. Simply minimizing the app requires me to reconnect. Lastly, I also occasionally have issues saving media from the device to my phone. It will say my phone doesn’t have available storage space even though it has gigabytes of free space. To summarize, this is a decent GoPro alternative but for serious shooting, I plan to stick to my GoPro. It’s definitely a gen 1 product and hopefully, some of the issues like heat will be worked out with firmware updates and/or future revisions. But for now, it’s a nice little camera, just not a fully blown GoPro replacement for me just yet. I really do like the form factor and feel it’s going in the right direction. However, I also couldn't recommend this to a friend over another action camera until some of the more serious issues, like the heat, are addressed. Given the size, weight and versatility, I believe DJI may also have plans to make this compatible with their drones, assuming that isn’t already the case.

Purchased to use on a beach trip. I wanted a camera without having to expose my phone to the elements (sun, sand, moisture, etc.) everytime i wanted to take a picture. I liked how you could record with just the camera module, then, attach to the screen module to transfer the images to the sdcard. Perhaps not worth it at full price. But often goes on sale.
