This really is the world's best drone right now.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Before I begin my review of the DJI Mavic Air 2, I'd like to briefly share some background about myself. Since before I was born, my father has been flying model airplanes for decades - even participating in several AMA events across the country. Since I was born, I have always been involved with the world of model aviation, which included getting my first trainer aircraft at the age of 8, getting my first AMA membership card (it cost $1 at the time, now free for all youth under 17) and gradually learning to fly all sorts of airplanes. I had never thought that the explosive growth of popularity with quadcopters (I know, everyone likes calling them "drones" but this is specifically what a UAS with 4 propellers arranged in a square is officially referred to) over the last decade has ignited the interest of model aviation as a whole, and I'm really happy about that. Except... I have never actually owned a quadcopter to fly recreationally before, until now, and I'm really excited to share my thorough thoughts about DJI's latest in their Mavic family of aircraft - the Mavic Air 2. The unboxing experience is simply bliss, and felt alot like unboxing a new Apple product. I was given the "Fly More Combo" for my review - DJI includes all sorts of extras, both the important stuff (batteries) and the much appreciated stuff (ND filters! Extra controller sticks! So many propeller sets!) to where it makes it a true no-brainer to go for the combo rather than the base offering for $799. With all 3 fully charged batteries, you'll be able to get more than an hour and a half of flying time using moderate settings configurations (1080p at 30fps), and less flying time if you're looking to film 4K at 60fps or those uber-cool 8K hyperlapse shots. There is a bit of initial setup involved with your quadcopter, which will mainly take about 1 hour or so to do... installing the first set of propellers, unwrapping all of the goodies, plugging all of the batteries and remote controller to charge, installing the DJI Fly app, etc... but it will all be worth it once you are out on an open field and ready to fly your Mavic Air 2. I am very impressed with the learning curve in flying the Mavic Air 2. DJI really has put a lot of thought and detail into training new flyers on how to control their quadcopter and ensure that both recreational and commercial flyers are following all safety rules and regulations. Now, I myself am well aware that UAS require registration with the FAA before flying, but DJI doesn't necessarily give that reminder to flyers, nor do they assist them with guiding them to the actual FAA government site to do the $5 registration process. This is a bit concerning, because a quick search for drone registration online shows a variety of 3rd-party providers charging more than $5 for the same process. It's also more concerning that you're not paying money directly to the FAA, which I'd much rather prefer. DJI also doesn't remind you that your registration number MUST be affixed anywhere outside of your Mavic Air 2 prior to doing any sort of flying - even in uncontrolled airspace (formally, Class G airspace). The DJI Fly app offers all sorts of options for modifying video/picture quality, automated focus assistance so the Mavic Air 2 can follow or rotate around you, verifying it's location on a map and avoiding entering restricted or unauthorized airspace, and I also really like how accurate AirSense is at warning you of nearby manned aircraft. You can fly up to 400 feet (120 meters) from the ground. On your remote controller, you have 3 control options you can quickly toggle: Tripod, Normal, and Sport or as I call them: Slow, Normal, Fast. The first mode drastically lowers the movement speed of the Mavic Air 2 and is recommended for us when taking photography or slow-moving video. Normal is exactly what it sounds like, and Sport mode, which happens to be my favorite of course, lets you move the Mavic Air 2 much quicker in the air, and also disables it's obstacle avoidance sensors so you can really experience a good thrill... just be sure you know where your Mavic Air 2 is at all times in the sky and remember, safety first! In conclusion, I'm seriously well-pleased with how easy and simple it was to set up, charge, and use the Mavic Air 2. I'm also impressed with all of the technologies being actively worked on to make the quadcopter... ok fine, the drone flying experience much more fun for both recreational and commercial flyers from all corners of the globe. It's also very exciting to see interest of model aviation in general becoming more appealing to the masses, especially for future generations who can find a love for the hobby and dig deeper as to what is possible when it comes to flight, and just how much fun and rewarding it can be out on the field.

Perfect Drone for Beginners and Enthusiasts
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I received this drone at no cost for review. I had been considering purchasing a drone for a long time, but never pulled the trigger on it, so having the chance to get the Mavic Air 2 was very exciting for me as the original Mavic Air was the drone I would have purchased for the price/performance ratio. Over the past week I’ve absolutely fallen in love with the Air 2 and the possibilities it represents. It was very easy to get comfortable flying and I’ve been impressed with every photo and video I’ve taken. I know that I’ve hardly even scratched the surface of what it’s capable of and that makes me all the more excited to continue using it. Prior to receiving the Air 2 I had no experience flying a ‘real’ drone and had only occasionally messed around with sub-$100 toys, so I was a bit apprehensive about flying it at first. I live in the city and wanted to make sure I flew it in a space that was free of houses, people, and general obstacles, both for the safety and not-being-a-creep factors. I watched a lot of videos about flying before I went out the first time and I’d recommend most people do the same. I ended up going to a park with a large open field and though I still exercise caution, the app’s tutorials and interface helped alleviate my apprehension pretty quickly. There’s a small learning curve with the app, but once you learn where everything is nothing important is more than a couple of taps away. Flying alone was a huge rush, especially in the sport mode, and the Air 2 is very compliant and easy to control. The connection between the drone and the controller supposedly allows for up 10km between them, but I generally kept it within sight of myself at no more than a few hundred feet away and usually less than 150ft off of the ground. I will also say that while it is certainly audible, it was much quieter than I expected; I would say the sound is akin to a weed wacker, but about half as loud. The photos and videos I’ve taken have impressed me in almost every circumstance, even while I was still trying to get the hang of just flying it. The perspectives alone that a drone allows you to capture are impressive enough and the onboard camera on the Air 2 can deliver some truly breathtaking shots. The gimbal keeps video super stable, even with some of my messier initial flights. I mostly shot video in 4K/30 with HDR and colors and details really pop without looking overly saturated. Photos were equally impressive. The ½” image sensor is smaller than the 1” sensor in the Mavic Pro and smaller again than the sensors in a DSLR or mirrorless camera, but I never found the quality wanting at all. The built-in tracking also works well and lets you set up some impressive moves with very little effort. The DJI app has some nice editing tools, though downloading a large video file from the drone can take a few minutes. The included controller is a good size and comfortable to hold, though the spring-loaded mechanism for attaching your phone is a little awkward for bigger phones like the Pixel 4 XL I was using. The buttons are all in good positions and the shoulder buttons and dial for controlling the camera are easy to reach and use by feel. If you are interested in the Air 2 I would wholeheartedly recommend the Fly More Combo. The extra 2 batteries alone more than justify the price differential, but the carrying case is maybe my favorite part of the package. It’s not much bigger than a regular camera bag, yet it will fit the drone, controller, both extra batteries, the charging hub, and all of the other accessories; it’s so well designed. I would also consider the DJI Care Refresh for peace of mind if, like me, you’re just starting out. I do wish it would cover a longer time period than 1 year, but for the price I think it’s a good value. I could go on and on about how much I love the Mavic Air 2. I think it’s a great middle ground for people who don’t want to spend $1600 on the Mavic Pro, but want something a little better than the Mavic Mini. I’m excited to continue growing into the Air 2.

Mavic Air 2 Flymore, an excellent choice.
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Mavic Air 2 is the first done I've ever flown, and have to say it's much easier than I thought! Simple take offs and landings make it a pseudo to fly. The picture and video quality is outstanding! The only drawbacks are no zoom on the camera, and side object detection sensors which can be found on the more expensive models. Otherwise this is a great starter. The Flymore package is a must! Small enough to take anywhere and comes with everything you need (extra batteries, cords, lens filters, propellers, charging base and a decent carrying case) to start without having to make several purchases afterwards. The line of sight range is excellent (over 6 miles at the beach) but can be skewed if you are in wooded areas and the pilot is not elevated. The drone will return to home automatically when battery life is around 15%. The drone is still flyable when return to home is aborted for about 5 to 10 minutes line of sight. Total flying time I experienced was a true 31 minutes in low to no wind, reduced when in constant wind or gusts. The Mavic Air 2 handled windy conditions far better than expected, being able to fly straight and hover in gusts past 35 mph or better which exceeded DJI's stated capabilities. Periodically when landing, the drone has not always been spot on from the launch/landing pad missing it by a few feet which could possibly be corrected with recalibration or corrections by the pilot. Overall I give the Mavic Air 2 a 5 star.

An amazing, well featured compact Drone!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The DJI Mavic Air 2 with the Fly More Combo is an amazing well-featured compact consumer-level drone. The primary features include: • 4K/60fps Video/48 MP Photos • 34-Min Max Flight Time • 10km 1080p Video Transmission • APAS 3.0 Obstacle Avoidance • 8K Hyperlapse • FocusTrack The Fly More Combo adds to this by including accessories that – well, as stated in the name – help you fly more! These accessories include 2 extra Intelligent flight batteries ($230 value), 3 extra Pairs of Low-noise Propellers ($33 value), a set of ND Filters for the camera ($65 value), a battery charging hub ($59 value), and a Battery to Power Bank Adapter, which allows you to use the Mavic Air Battery as a power bank to charge your phone or a tablet ($19 value). This combo adds $189 to the price of the base Mavic Air 2. Bought separately these would cost $495 – which makes this a fantastic price at $998 vs the base Mavic Air 2 price of $799. This review will be done in 3 parts – features, usage impressions, and Pros/Cons. Features: The DJI Mavic Air 2 has several key features. First among these are features that aid a drone pilot to capture some awesome videos and still images shots. The ½-inch CMOS sensor allows for up to 48 MP photos including smart photos and for 4K/60 FPS video. Smartphoto is an optimized capture method that “integrates scene recognition, HyperLight, and HDR into one mode for optimal results. Scene recognition optimizes different camera parameters for various scenes and supports intelligent recognition of five categories: sunset, skies, grass, snow, and trees.” The device is also capable of Enhanced HDR photos, videos, and panorama shots. Additionally, the device has several Quickshots built in that allow one to take a cinematic quality shot of a target and the surrounding area. Each Quickshot is a pre-programmed aerial route that allows one to capture cinematic video clips. The quick shots are all oriented at a target and have an associated flight pattern, for example, the Dronie pattern the drone flies backward away from the subject while capturing the shot; while the Rocket pattern flies straight up with the camera pointing down at the targeted subject. The others are called Circle, Helix, Boomerang, and Asteroid. One can see examples of each at the DJI website. The final video feature is called Hyperlapse and this mode is shot in 8K and this mode allows “you to warp time and space for especially stunning footage. Best of all, you can achieve this shot without complex post-processing. Choose from Free, Circle, Course Lock, and Waypoint modes, select the shooting location, and the DJI Fly app will do the rest.” You can view a video clip shot at 1080P @30 FPS here: https://youtu.be/H-KbXEqi3Pc The second area of features that make this drone so incredible is called FocusTrack. FocusTrack is a “suite of intelligent tracking modes” – including Active Track 3.0, Spotlight 2.0 and Point of Interest 3.0 as follows: • Active track 3.0 – Allows the drone to follow subjects while avoiding obstacles and the drone can keep track of the subjects. This mode can also find subjects if they are lost because of moving behind an obstacle. There are 2 modes for this feature – Trace, that tracks the subject at a constant distance and allows for obstacles, and Parallel, that tracks the subject at a constant angle and distance from the side, unfortunately, the aircraft cannot sense obstacles in this mode. • Spotlight 2.0 – “Fly freely while the camera remains locked on the subject with this convenient mode. Simply select your subject and fly.” • Point of Interest 3.0 – in this mode “the aircraft tracks the subject in a circle based on the radius and flight speed selected. This mode works with both static and moving subjects – as long as they are not moving too fast.” The third area of features for this drone is the built-in safety systems. The safety systems being with OcuSync 2.0, which is the video transmission system for the drone. This system has a range of 10 km and can deliver a 1080P FHD resolution Livestream directly form the drone’s camera. The system is also dual banded allowing transmission at both 2.4 and 5.8 GHz to deliver “a reliable signal and smooth flights” and since the system gets to the best channel with the lowest interference it increases flight safety. Adding to this is the Intelligent Flight Battery with up to 34 minutes of flight time, allows one to take great shots and in sport mode one can reach a flight speed of up to 68 kph (just over 42 mph). Rounding out the safety features is the impressive obstacle avoidance system known as the Advanced Pilot Assistance Systems (APAS) 3.0. This system “utilizes an advanced mapping technology for smooth following and reliable obstacle avoidance in complex scenarios. Obstacle avoidance performance and automatic flight planning have dramatically improved compared to previous generations, increasing safety, and providing more options.” This system allows the drone to perceive its environment forward, backward, and downward. The fourth and final feature area that I am going to focus one is the applications that one uses with the Mavic Air 2 – DJI Fly and DJI Assistant 2 for Mavic. The DJI Fly app works on several smartphones – but not all smartphones It works in connection with the remote control the comes with the Mavic Air 2. The app allows for ease of flying, using manual settings, advanced functions – including Quickshots and the FocusTrack modes. DJI Fly also allows one to edit their videos right on your smartphone. The remote control also has a 6-hour battery life and charges the phone while it’s in use. DJI Assistant 2 for Mavic is a Windows/Mac application that provides you with the ability to “upload flight data, black box information, calibrate your vision sensors and upgrade your firmware”. It also contains a simulator that will replay your flights based on the blackbox data. This feature does use the motors so be sure to remove the aircraft’s propellers before using it! Usage Impressions: The Mavic Air 2 is a device that truly makes the saying that “good things come in small packages” ring true. This is a highly sophisticated drone aircraft that is packed with features. Features for the advanced drone user as well as those that can help the new to drone operations. The DJI Fly app is a terrific feature of this system that allows one to take advantage of the many pre-programmed activities to get wonderful shots from the drone. This application also has plenty of features and capabilities to aid you in using the drone most effectively. The included tutorials – including videos - and help features of the app are great aid helping one get up to speed on this drone and its capabilities. The Fly More Combo included in this version is an amazingly valuable addition to the overall value of the package. One of the best features is that the entire collection of items in this package fits in the carry bag – which makes taking this drone with you on your travels and adventures that much more enjoyable and gives you over 100 minutes of flight time with all 3 Intelligent flight batteries fully charged. The included safety systems, especially the Obstacle avoidance capabilities also allow one to do more with the drone and do it safely. This will bring you hours of fun using the system and capturing your travels and adventures in a whole new way. One downside to the DJI Fly app is that it supports a very limited set of phones. It does support many iPhones and iPods with iOS 10.0 or above. For Android devices, they must have Android 6.0 or above but also must be specific brands and models – for example, my Motorola G6 Android device is not compatible; even with Android 9.0 installed. Samsung Galaxy/Note, HUAWEI, Honor, OnePlus, and Pixel phones are compatible Android devices. On a final note, please be advised that in the United States of America, Drone usage is a highly regulated activity with Federal requirements, state, and possibly local regulations to comply with. Please be aware of the rules and regulations and fly safely and legally. Pros: Features, Features, and more features. Fly Mode Combo is a terrific value add. Cons: Battery flight time seems shorter than advertised, iPhone Charging must be activated each time one uses the DJI Fly App, limited Android phone model support
