DJI Drones - Great Product w/ caveat..
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great Product BUT you better search your home and surroundings on the DJI FLYSafe app to see if you will be able to take off. You may live in a Fully Restricted location or one in which you may have to constantly request an unlock code. The operation of the Mavic Air 2 is great. The restrictions and the unlocks are a pain...and at the moment you have to do them from a computer not your cellphone...if your caught unawares your day will be ruined.

Excellent, but flawed, "prosumer" drone.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.THE GOOD -Excellent camera with much improved sensor and resolution -"Fly More" bundle includes extra batteries, props, carry bag, and ND filters -Lots of nice automated subject tracking modes -Obstacle avoidance and subject tracking is MUCH improved -ADS-B for alerting you to other aerial vehicles -New controller is much better for holding your phone THE BAD -Practically no documentation or manuals at time of writing -No SD card included -ND filters included are too dark for most uses -No aperture or zoom controls -Limited manual gimbal control -Limited controller customization -Can't control the drone with phone only -No gesture controls -No active track when recording above 30 fps on any resolution -No side or top collision detection -Obstacle avoidance system still has problems with close trees and signs THE DETAILS After using the Mavic Air 2, the word that sticks in my mind is "prosumer." It performs and functions well above what an average consumer will ever do with an aerial camera platform, but it's not quite to the level where it could be the daily workhorse of a professional drone pilot/photographer. It's a hybrid that satisfies the needs of the dedicated hobbyist and can handle the lighter workloads of the professional, and still be affordable to both. Compared to the old Air it's replacing and its current stable-mates, it may be more accurate to call this the Mavic 2 Junior rather than the Air 2. The three big changes over the previous Air are the drone size, the controller, and the much upgraded camera and sensor. Each of these also comes with a trade-off. My list above may seem quite negative, but most of the "cons" are admittedly small and won't matter to some users. I come at this having some limited experience with the Mavic Pro Platinum so maybe I'm expecting too much of the Air 2. The big increase in size from Air to Air 2 means the new model isn't as portable friendly as it's predecessor. It's notably heavier and almost twice as big when folded up. That may be off putting to some, but the increased weight is mainly due to the much larger battery which gives drastically improved flight time. DJI says 34 mins in ideal conditions, but I find 25 - 28 is what you'll see in real-world use. The extra weight also gives extra stability in wind. The controller is completely redesigned, and largely for the better. I never liked the fold-out handles before. Mounting the phone was awkward, it never worked with a phone case, and the grip never felt secure. The new controller is bigger ( again, accommodating a larger battery ) and the phone mounts to the top in a simpler and more secure fashion ( and it doesn't matter if the phone is in a case or not ). The spring loaded jaws can be tricky if you're mounting the phone on the go rather that on a desk or table, but that's the worst of it. However again, the trade-off here is the controller doesn't fold up, so like the drone itself, it takes up more space if you plan to pack it along. There's also no central ring to hang the controller from a neck lanyard to help with the added weight. The overall control scheme is more limited than the original Air. You can't directly control the Air 2 from a mobile device nor can you use gestures. The lack of gestures may not be a big deal, but requiring the controller for everything is annoying. Even simple close-range tracking shots require you to hook up your phone to the controller, which as I said is tricky to do on the move, and means carrying the controller with you at all times. Customizing the control scheme is also limited. The Air 2 controller only has a single trigger for record start/stop and photo shutter release, a toggle wheel for gimbal up/down rotation, a face button to switch between the last video and photo modes used, and one function button that can only be used for turning on the bottom aux light and toggling the gimbal between 0 and 90 degrees. I missed the extra scroll wheel, the extra rear triggers, and 5-way switch of the Mavic Pro controller. You can change your control stick layout ( but not the gimbal wheel direction ), but oddly inverting an axis on one stick causes the same on the other stick. So if you wanted to use an airplane layout ( Down to ascend, Up to descend ) on one stick, the other would have to be Up to move backward and down to move forward. Or if you wanted to reverse your yaw ( like you would on a camera jib ) the other stick has to be Left to move right and Right to move left. I don't know why you're even allowed to invert the axes if this is the restriction for it. The last big change from the original Air is the larger image sensor and greatly improved camera, and it's very impressive. The camera can now take 48 megapixel still images, both JPEG and DNG, and record 1080p 120 fps, 240 fps, and 4k 60 fps video. You also get HDR still image and video capture up to 4k30. The Air 2 also supports h.265 format writing to the SD card and a maximum bitrate of 120 Mbps. However the Air 2 has been deliberately hamstrung, understandably, so it can't fully compete with the Mavic 2 Pro and similar costing drones to undercut their sales. Manual gimbal control is limited only to pan up and down; no side-to-side or portrait/roll controls. It also has a fixed aperture and no zoom functionality. And though it has front, bottom, and rear cameras for obstacle detection and avoidance, it does not have side or top sensors. Since the Air 2 can't pan its gimbal to the side very far, and it doesn't have a lateral sensor, when tracking a moving subject from the side it tends to drop behind so it's forward collision sensors can still see somewhat in front of the drone. No top sensor means tunnels and overhanging branches are a threat as well. The overall collision avoidance system is greatly improved over past DJI drones, but it's still not hard to fool. It will still get hung up on close packed trees, large signs, and light poles if you're not careful. The auto subject tracking is also improved and will stay on subjects even if they pass behind trees, poles, or fences. However if the subject stays out of view more than a few seconds, it can still be lost. None of the tracking features can be used when filming above 30 fps, though. And you might have a hard time learning how to use these features or what they do because the included manual in the box is practically non-existent. And that brings up one of my biggest complaints. The lack of documentation is horrible. DJI is following the unfortunately common "release now / patch and document later" pattern on this. The box only contains a quick-start guide, and as of this writing a full manual is still not on DJI's website. The quick-start guide makes it seem like you can be up and flying five minutes after you take the drone out of the box. It doesn't mention anything about downloading updated firmware, checking that you're in an acceptable flight area, or how to activate the special flight modes. Anyone without extensive experience on Mavic Pros and Phantoms will have a steep learning curve. My only other big complaint has to do with the accessories in the Fly More bundle. On the whole, spending extra on the Fly More bundle is by far the best deal. The extra batteries alone are worth it, to say nothing of the carry case, extra propellers, and battery charging port. However, not including an SD card, even a small capacity one, is odd. The Air 2 has 8GB internal storage, but that's only enough for about 10 minutes of video, depending how you're shooting. The bundle also includes three neutral density filters ( 16-, 64-, and 256-stop lenses ), but only the ND16 filter is of use to most people. DJI offers a separate filter pack, containing the more commonly used ND4 and ND8 filters ( which also includes ND32 ). It makes sense to split up the most commonly used filters to entice more product sales, but not if you want your customers to have the most commonly used tools right out of the box. Overall the drone deserves a 4.5 out of 5 ranking. It brings a lot of great things to the sub-$1000 drone market, more features than a lot of drone users will ever fully explore. Only full professionals or the most enthusiastic amateurs will feel limited by its abilities. But I have to dock points for DJI not having documentation ready for launch, or at least some more in-depth training and tutorial videos available for new buyers. Eager new drone buyers want to get out flying and have their drones make them look like experts, but that doesn't happen when they have to spend days reading other people's tutorials and guides learning how to use those cool AI features they specifically bought that drone for.

Worth the price!
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is an excellent drone for beginners and mid level pilots. Make sure you buy the combo as it has two batteries and other accessories which would otherwise cost more. Preloaded setting for the gimble are amazing.

Drone
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This drone is really fun to fly around. Though still learning a lot of the camera tricks, I wish the camera had a zoom lens. Maybe it does, and I just haven’t figured it out yet.

||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm in real-estate and in order to make listings i depend on a drone to do that. My previous drone was gifted to me and unfortunately it malfunctioned in air and landed in a canal. i needed something quick to carry on with my work, so found this dependable drone online. The price was fair, pics are good quality and it gets the job done.
