Summation. This pint-sized powerhouse folds up for storage convenience, dances through the air at a mere 249 grams (say goodbye to registration hassles!), and boasts a camera that effortlessly flips between landscape and portrait video or stills – capturing your moments from all angles. With a 360-degree obstacle avoidance system and HDR video capabilities, this drone creates drone flying into an absolute thrill ride! In the US, because it weighs only 249 grams with the standard battery installed, it even eliminates the need to register it with the FAA. PROS • The video is very clear and available up to 4K. The color rendering is adjustable through manual white balance. • It’s can shoot 12mp or 48mp Raw Stills, but you can also shoot simple JPG stills. • As a new drone operator, I appreciate the Omnidirectional Obstacle Avoidance system although I have not tested it. I would still be very cautious around things like tree limbs and telephone wires. The drone can only avoid things it sees, and the avoidance system shuts off when in Sport mode. • Because it weighs only 249 grams, it’s regulation-friendly when using the standard battery. But I registered mine for $5 which is good for 3 years. • The RC 2 Controller has a nice screen that can be light adjusted. It’s all touch screen and all inclusive for all settings and operations. No need for a smart phone link. • I have not gone below 30% on my battery but it seems to provide approximately 30 minutes of flight time. That of course is dependent on wind, power modes used, and type of flying demands you require of it. • The camera gimbal rotates from straight up to straight down. It also provides left to right rotation without having to rotate the drone. • The two joysticks are easy to operate and you can customize how they work. There are two custom button buttons on the bottom of the Controller for things like cruise control and shutter speed adjustments. • The DJI website claims that the M4Pro has a 12.4-Mile Range which is crazy far, however federal law still requires line-of-sight operation. • This combo plus arrives with three standard batteries, each with 30 +or- minutes fly time. • A very cool FocusTrack Subject Tracking System allows the pilot to automatically have the drone track its subject. In addition to FocusTrack, you can manually move your drone around the subject whether the subject is stationary or moving. • The carrying case holds everything; the folded drone, three batteries and the charging case, the RC2 controller, charging wires, and spare parts • When you’re low on battery, the drone will find its way home safely using the most direct route. You can press the RTH button at any time to have the drone fly back to. • It has a cool feature for taking off. If you press the take off button, the drone climes to about shoulder level and hovers. This gives you an opportunity to visually examine its performance and help insure its operations correcting be fore actually going aloft. • It has the same feature for landing. Just press the landing button and the drone slowly finds its way to ground safely. Cons • Like everything else we buy today, DJI does not provide a written manual. It’s easily download, but it’s 115 pages to print. For something as technical as this drone, it would be nice to have a printed copy in a font size we can read. • If you add the high powered battery (not included), it bumps the weight over the 249 gram max, and the drone will need to be registered. It’s truly not a big deal. It’s $5 and 10 minute registration. • Its lightweight and higher winds will challenge its ability to shoot steady video and sharp focus stills, but the drone has done a nice job with up to 15 mph gusts. • Support is great – when you can actually get support. I had multiple issues and it was very difficult to understand the support agents and the responses were varied and sporadic. I ended up solving a setup issue by watching several online YouTube Videos.
