Introduction: I love flying drones; I have been flying for about 5 years now. I have my FAA Part 107 certificate, and I started cinematic flying with the original DJI Mavic Mini. I also have a DJI Mavic 2 Pro, and now the DJI Mavic Mini 4 Pro. I also have a collection of FPV drones including 5” Acro drones, indoor whoops, and 5” long-distance drones. I am a fan of DJI drones because of the features, stability of flight, and the quality of the cameras. The Mavic 3 brought about some serious new features and upgrades. I did not get any of the 3 series drones. Now the Mavic Mini 4 Pro has numerous new upgrades from the 3 Mavic Mini 3, so when I got the opportunity to test one, I jumped on it. The weather here was bad throughout the testing period. I only got 2 flights in because of the high winds and storms. I used those flights to test the flight characteristics and flight features. Unfortunately, I didn’t get any good pictures or videos to put into this review. I took pictures from the garage one windy day, and it was enough to test the photography and videography from this drone. First Impression: My first impression started with the travel pouch. It is a soft-sided pouch that fits the drone, the charger with room for 3 batteries, the RC2 controller, and room for spare parts. This is a nice carry pouch for short trips around town, or when putting it in the trunk of my bike. For longer trips or travelling via airplanes, I got a hard-sided case for ultimate protection. The gimbal protection piece is also a nice change, and I really like the way to remove it and put it back on. It simply pushes straight on and clips in place. Much easier than the original 1 and 2 series, which had a plastic pivoting surface that had to sit on top of the gimble before attaching the top clips and then the bottom clip. I also like the blade protector. It fits tight and you need to be careful when putting it back on. But it fits the drone well and does a good job of protecting the blades. I had to buy one for my Mavic Mini 1 because the case it came in put pressure on the blades that would distort the shape of the blades and caused crashes. Mavic Mini 4 Pro Specifications: The Mavic Mini 4 Pro specifications are as follows: • Camera: 24mm EFL ƒ/1.7 • Image sensor: 1/1.3-inch 48 MP • Still image size: 8064 x 6048 • ISO: 100-6400, 100-1600 in high dynamic range modes, and 100-12800 in night mode • Video: 4K @ 60fps Normal mode, 100fps Slow-Mo mode • Max framerate: 200fps at 1080P / 100fps at 4K • Color modes: 8-bit or 10-bit 4:2:0 (HLG / D-Log M) • Radio / Range: DJI O4 / 12.4 miles • Max speed: 35.8mph in Sport mode. • Max Ascent/Decent Speed: 5ms in N and S mode, and 3ms in C mode. • Flight time: 34 min, 45 minutes with Intelligent Flight Battery+ • Max Hovering Time: 30 min hover with standard battery, 39 with intelligent Flight Battery+. • Takeoff weight: 249g • Dimensions: 148 x 94 x 64mm (folded) • Dimensions: 298 x 373 x 101mm (unfolded) • DJI RC 2 weight: 416g The drone has 2GB of internal storage for emergencies, and a microSD slot for external storage. The RC2 also has a microSD slot for recording to the controller instead of the drone. The max card size is 512GB for both the drone and RC2 controller. Upgrades to the Mavic Mini 4 Pro compared to the Mavic Mini 3 Pro: 1. Full 360˚ obstacle avoidance system compared to front, back, and down sensor. 2. Advanced Pilot Assistance Systems (APAS) for new bypass mode in obstacle avoidance. 3. New auxiliary landing light. 4. Front landing legs added for more stability in landing. 5. Extended Battery + for extended flight time and hovering. 6. Improved camera Image Signal Processor (ISP) for better images and video. 7. New ActiveTrack 360 due to full 360˚ obstacle avoidance. 8. New D-LOG-M and HLG color profiles. This is the first Mavic Mini with DLOG. 9. 4K 60 HDR vs 4K 30 HDR. 10. 4K 100fps slow motion instead of 4K 60fps. 11. New Next-Gen SmartPhoto to obtain images with higher dynamic range. 12. OcuSync 4 Transmission system. Fly up to 20 kilometers in FCC mode compared to 12 km. 13. Waypoints, Cruise Control ActiveTrack 360, and Night Video features. 14. Advanced Return to Home (RTH) with new Optimal Mode. 15. Three new Augmented Reality features: a. AR Homepoint: Dynamic home point on the screen, easy to see. b. AR RTH: shows the optimal route the drone is using. c. AR aircraft shadow – shows a shadow on the ground of where the drone is going to land. 16. MasterShots – where the drone will perform a range of drone moves around a subject. Flight Performance: Like all previous versions, the Mavic Mini 4 Pro is an absolute pleasure to fly, even more so than the earlier versions. It’s as stable as all the others. If you are like me and like flying your drone in Forests or places hard to get through, the new 360° Obstacle Avoidance System is amazing. The sensors are mounted at angles, providing a true 360° vision, so it now has protection in every direction the drone can go. Testing this showed this one to be a very intelligent obstacle avoidance with graphic displays on the RC2, so you won’t be surprised or confused when the drone stops or bypasses the obstacles. It makes flying the drone much safer, especially when using QuickShots, MasterShots, Waypoints, or Hyperlapse. Two other nice features that are welcome to the Mavic Mini line are Waypoints and Cruise Control. Up until the Mavic Mini 4 Pro, these features were restricted to the Mavic Series and the Mavic 3 Air series. The waypoints make this drone more of a professional drone, and it’s built in, so you don’t need to buy 3rd party software to implement it. And the cruise control is also very nice. If you are flying in a straight line, you can activate cruise control and the drone will continue the same path and speed. This releases you from having to keep your fingers on the sticks and makes it easy to perform other functions such as changing gimble angle, adjusting digital zoom, and taking pictures. Finally, with the new O4 video transmission system, we have HD video at 60fps at 20 km. This means it has a much stronger signal, helping to eliminate electrical or radio interference, removing that stress from flying in certain areas. I noticed much stronger signals compared to my other Mavic Mini in the same locations where I would see interference. Photo/Video Performance: The photo and video performance are really good on this drone, and a major upgrade compared to the Mavic Mini 3 Pro and before. The video now has DLOG-M and HLG color profiles, something no Mavic Mini has ever had. 4K HDR is now at 60 frames a second, and you can record 4K slow motion at 100fps. You can shoot photos in both 12 MP, 48 MP, or RAW. I rarely shoot RAW from a drone, because the photo formats offered provide good dynamic range and can be edited post shoot if needed. The 48 MP is a little noisier than the 12, so I will shoot at 12 MP unless I need to crop. The 12 MP photos came out very nice. For those who want to take photos or videos for IG, Tik-Tok, or YouTube shorts, the camera has a vertical shoot mode. When selected, the camera rotates 90 degrees for a true, non-cropping vertical shot. Night Mode must be one of my most welcomed features. I love night photography and videography, and now that the FAA has made night-flying easier, having this mode will open the ability to take amazing night videos. The fixed 1.7 aperture will let a lot of light in, and mixed with Night Mode, which adjusts the video settings automatically, the drone can give us amazing night videos that are sharp and have little to no noise. Firmware Update: Just before I was finishing up the testing, DJI released a very important firmware update. This update created new features and added to others. The biggest change from this firmware is the ability to use the Mavic Mini 4 Pro as an FPV drone. Here is a list of all of the changes: • New Firmware adds the ability to use DJI goggles 2/Integra and the RC Motion 2 controller. • You can now save screenshots and recordings to the microSD card in the RC2 controller. • Vision Assist: Allows Black & White recording or taking snapshots from obstacle avoidance sensors. • Adds Auto Mode to the ActiveTrack 360°: This allows the drone to automatically plan and maneuver custom moves while in AutoTrack 360. • Adds Vision Positioning and Obstacle Sensing switch: The option to turn off the downward sensors to get certain shots like low altitude. • Adds 3x digital zoom for 12MP photo mode. • Adds support for taking five 48MP photos when using AEB and Burst Shooting. Conclusion: The DJI Mavic Mini 4 Pro is offered as an entry-level drone. But with all the advancements over the last few years, especially since the original Mavic Mini, it is more of an advanced professional drone being offered at an entry level price. The improvements over the original are huge, but even looking back to the Mavic 3 series, there are a tremendous number of improvements. From the improved obstacle avoidance making it safer to fly, to the new active track 360 and MasterShots that help you create professional photos and videos without being a professional photographer or videographer, to the new Night Mode that helps create amazing nighttime videos, this drone is sure to please just about any drone pilot or aspiring drone cinematographer. And the RC2 controller is amazing, with a brighter screen, added ability to record flights to the RC2, and the dual scroll wheel and C1 & C2 buttons that help automate common changes during flight quick and easy. I highly recommend this drone. Final Thoughts: The latest firmware update is huge. The updates are huge, many appearing on a Mini for the very first time. This tells me just how serious DJI is in supporting and equipping this drone with the absolute latest technology. I cannot wait to see what comes next.
