Wish there was a Dredd 2
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great steelbook for a great action flick that perhaps its not the greatest film of all time, but nevertheless it does a good job at being what it is. The only negative point is that with the 4k in some scenes the picture looks a bit too much grainy.

Defied my expectations every step of the way
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. You’re being hunted, outnumbered, you’re unable to escape. To make matters worse, your only ally is inexperienced and you have a prisoner whose safety is your responsibility. What do you do? The majority of the United States is now uninhabitable, thanks to radiation. Those areas are referred to as The Cursed Earth. Mega-City One, one of the habitable areas, is a large violent metropolis containing close to one billion people and suffering 17,000 violent crimes a day. The only bulwark maintaining some semblance of order is the greatly outnumbered Judges. Despite their name, they perform the same tasks as police officers in addition to carrying out the duties of determining guilt and imposing sentence. One such man is Judge Dredd (played by Karl Urban). Dredd (Urban) is well-known among his fellow Judges for his uncompromising nature and stiff sentences. Against his will, Dredd is ordered by his superior to evaluate a young officer who failed her exams but was offered the chance to be a Judge because of her psychic abilities, caused by the radiation and making her part of a societal caste referred to as “mutants”. The young rookie (played by Olivia Thirlby) is named Cassandra Anderson and, while Dredd wears a helmet throughout the entire film, she elects not to for fear that it will inhibit her psychic abilities. Simultaneously, in a 200-story slum referred to as The Peach Trees, a crime boss named Madeline Madrigal, also known as Ma-Ma, (played by Lena Headey) has three men drugged, skinned, and dropped from a high floor in The Peach Trees. Dredd and Anderson are informed via radio and arrive at the scene to investigate. Anderson’s psychic abilities allow her to identify one of the perpetrators almost immediately, causing Dredd to take the man into custody so he can be interrogated back at the Judges’ headquarters. Something Ma-Ma cannot allow. And the hunt begins. Now, I have seen the seen the 1995 Sylvester Stallone movie which was inspired by the same source material. In fact, I’ve seen it many times. I’m not proud of it, but it’s true. While this film doesn’t explore Dredd’s origins or allow the same “growth”, I’d say Dredd succeeded where its predecessor failed. No, it doesn’t have Rob Schneider to offer comic relief or Diane Lane and Joan Chen as strong and attractive female characters, but the cat-and-mouse game Headey’s character and the illustration of the drug referred to as Slo-Mo more than compensate. It doesn’t break new ground or challenge the actors, save for Headey who is forced to appear unattractive onscreen for the first time in her career, but it is highly entertaining and I enjoyed it a great deal.

Great reinvention of the Judge Dredd franchise.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was a bit skeptical of the newest version of Judge Dredd. I collected the comics way back and was a bit disappointed in the first Judge Dredd movie with Stallone. The new movie is much more gritty and has a more "real" feel to it. The story and actors are great and I found myself wanting more when this film was over. I truly hope that they make this a trilogy as was originally planned even though the box office takes were less than expected. I think once people see this on bluray, dvd or ppv they will most likely go see the sequel in theaters. If you're a Judge Dredd fan or not I recommend this action flick!

Well done and one to pick up for action fans !!!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Well done movie and worth picking up for any action fans. More grittier and darker plot with more blood and gore than the previous Judge Dredd. The actor Karl Urban did an excellent Judge Dredd. If you have a nice surround sound system your ears are in for a treat. Audio is optimized for a 7.1 setup and can be played on a 5.1 setup and still sounds incredible. Could not believe how sharp the audio was and must say a good movie to demo a surround sound system. Very good special features that go into the behind the scenes of the movie and the history of the Judge Dredd comics by the creators. There is also a prequel to the movie motion comic under the special features. If you have a 3D TV a 3D version of the movie is also included on the same disc. Just hope a Dredd 2 will be done.

Redeems Dredd from bad Stallone Film, Great 3D
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Dredd is everything that people that were disappointed in the old Stallone film could ever want. We get a movie where the action is truly gritty, just like the comic. You get an actor that doesn't take his helmet off and looks and acts like Dredd, and you leave the theater satisfied and talking with your friends about the film for days. Dredd is just pure fun. And with the Blu Ray 3D, it is even more fun watching it at home than the 3D in the theater. The Blu-Ray is a perfect transition. At home, the 3D really flies out at you at the screen and you feel like you are inside the movie. For the slo-mo sequences, it is worth buying this blu ray for just that alone. Now while the plot is on the thin side (nearly the whole movie takes place inside a building, and it could've used more extras) this is a great Blu ray 3D release. Yeah, there are a bunch of featurettes in the extras, but they are short and could've expanded on things. But the good completely outweights the minor annoyances. You get awesome action, great one liners, great picture, sound, and absolutely fantastic 3D. Even if you don't know who or what Dredd is, still give it a shot, you might enjoy yourself, especially if you have a 3D tv at home. If not, and you already own this film, it might be worth buying a 3D tv for.

Continuous Awesomeness
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you avoided this movie because of your dislike to the original Judge Dredd movie staring Sylvester Stalone stop what you are doing and go watch this version. This is a million times better and really captures the gritty, dark and depressing world that these characters reside in. Karl Urban is phenomenal as Dredd and he is non-stop Bad-@$$ throughout the entire film. If you are a fan of the comics, this version is closer to the comics and you will be happy to know that Urban never removes his helmet throughout the film. A true call out to the faceless butt-kicking Judge of the comics. Highly under appreciated movie that deserved more credit than it received.

Kicking myself for not seeing this in theaters!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am very upset that i did not give Dredd a chance while it was in theaters. I honestly felt burned by the Sylvester Stallone helmed Judge Dredd movie and i let it affect my decision on this new one with Karl Urban. However once it was released on Blu-Ray i heard a lot of praise for this movie since a lot of people first saw this on Blu-Ray as well. I caved and gave this movie a shot and i enjoyed it immensely from the opening car chase with Dredd himself all the way to the rookie Thirlby using her psychic powers on the baddies to the ending which was thoroughly satisfying!! Some people complain about the sets looking not looking for realistic or well built but people just do not understand the world Judge Dredd is based in, the sets we're soooo good. I would highly recommend any action movie fan see this movie immediately.

An action-packed comic adaption that hits the mark
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Following the unintentionally hilarious release of "Judge Dredd" in 1995 starring Sly Stallone, the hope of any future films centered around the no holds barred Judge, Jury and Executioner brought to life by John Wagner and artist Carlos Ezquerra seemed pretty grim. However, in 2012, DREDD 3D was released to little fanfare in the states, and while not a box office smash, it offered one of the most loyal comic to film adaptions to date with great action sequences, a solid story and redemption for the 1995 disasterpiece. Some fans have pointed out plot similarities between DREDD 3D and Gareth Evans' fantastic "The Raid: Redemption". While the two share the same basic premise (which isn't all that unique to begin with), the execution of both are different and give each film their own identity and feel. This 3D/2D Blu-Ray offers very crisp audio and visuals, though the extras and bonus features are a bit lacking. Still, it is a fantastic offering for hardcore Dredd fans and casual action flick viewers alike. The characters, presentation and ambiance in the film stay fiercely loyal to the source material without ever straying too far from mainstream accessibility.

One of the best film surprises of the year.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was hesitant after the Stallone version and the terrible trailer for the new one I saw in theatres. After seeing some internet reviews I decided to give it a shot and I'm glad I did. Great pace, good action, loved the characters, and it wasn't over dramatic or cheesy. One of the few movies of 2012 I wasn't upset I paid to see. Needless to say I preordered it. Would recommend. Its a great action flik.

Fast, action packed movie with amazing visuals
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This was one of the best movies I saw in the theaters in 2012. The action is straight and to the point, the setting is fully realized and interesting, without requiring lots of exposition, and the visuals are stunning. The movie uses vibrant colors, where most action movies are dark and dreary. The cinematography includes a number of interesting slow motion shots which are clearly directed with 3D in mind. This blu-ray preserves everything I loved about the movie. Unfortunately, I am unable to watch the 3D blu-ray so i can't comment on it, however, if you are looking for a great movie with stunning action, colors and visuals to show off your home theater, Dredd is a top pick.

Great looking steelbook but horrible transfer.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The transfer on the 4k disc looks terrible and poorly done. It makes the movie look even more cheap and has multiple scenes that are very noticeable in the drop of resolutions, touching 720p if not a bit lower. It looks like a pirated low quality copy of the film that was added to the disc. Anyone that says this looks amazing is not telling the truth and anyone who says T2 is the worst looking 4k transfer has not experienced dredd in 4k yet

Awesome graphic movie!!!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was surprised to see most theaters never got this film up. I decided to wait for blu-ray because I did not have time to watch but wanted to. I have to say, for something low budget as documentary said, It was pretty intense and well thought out. If your on the fence, buy the movie. Its worth it. I dont even like gore but they did it pretty nicely, artsy rather than clumsy. If you can't stand blood in the movie screen, I caution you not to buy it though. My only complaint is how come a sequel has not been planned yet?

Surprisingly exciting flick. Demo quality sound
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had never heard of this one but saw it had positive reviews on a movie website so I gave it a rental. It was a nice surprise. I never did see the movie Judge Dredd from the 90s but understand this movie is based on the same comic book character. I recognize the main character who plays Dredd as Scotty from the new Star Trek movie. This action flick feels fresh/original but because it's pretty graphic it's not for everyone. I can only hope a follow movie is made on this character. If you have a surround sound system the audio is fantastic and definately adds to the experience. I understand this is also a 3D Blu Ray disc but I saw this in 2D and was pleased with the picture quality. I rented this one first but soon after added it to my Blu Ray collection.

Astounding Action Movie -- if it works
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This isn't Lawrence of Arabia nor was it meant to be. This is an fun, loud, and extremely violent movie that will make your Home Theater sit up and take notice. Very aggressive audio and great 3D effects. More Robocop and Blade Runner than Transformers in plot, but easily can match the latter Bluray as far as a Demo disc. Generally this will erase from memory the much inferior version with Stallone. One of the biggest problems was apparently a bad batch that seemed to primarily affect Best Buy copies that either wouldn't load or wouldn't play all the way through. My first copy wouldn't load on any player, the second copy played without a hitch. By reports the bad pressings have mostly been weeded out and recent purchases should be OK

awesome
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've never read the comic and didn't see the first version. i love sci-fi and originally purchased this DVD to increase my 3d DVD collection. i was happily surprised that I completely enjoyed this movie. The plot, the acting, and the 3d effects were good, it kept me involved throughout movie. this was a DVD i could watch again without getting bored. the first time i watched it, when it ended, i wanted to see more. hopefully, there is a sequel in the future. i was not disappointed to have purchased this movie in prerelease.

Not as great as everyone makes it
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is not the end all be all movie that the internet fans tout it to be. Once scene in particular towards the end where we think Dredd is going to get it is just too far fetched and stupid. It borrows elements from other comic movies such as weapons with deadly safeguards(Blade) and a transmitter that sets off a bomb if the person wearing it heart beat stops(Spawn). Still the action is awesome and Karl Urban is the perfect Dredd.

Will make you forget Stallone was ever Dredd
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This movie blows the God awful Sylvester Stallone film out of the water. This is Dredd the way he was always meant to be: brutal and unforgiving, just like this films pacing. The movie moves from scene to scene at a breakneck pace, ratcheting up the tension at every turn and amping up the stakes on the action. Great story, great acting, great action and effects. You can't beat this for a 3D Blu-ray at under $5. Do yourself a favor and check out one of the best action movies most folks haven't seen.

Good movie, Great 3D
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've enjoyed the movie the handful of times I've watched it. story is what you expect from all out action, it's just there. The action is great, more graphic than I typically need, but it works for the style of the original source. The thing that made this worth owning for me was the 3D. This was one of the best examples of using 3D right. I also appreciate that it was just one release with 3D and regular blu, I don't need to pay extra to have every format for this movie.
