Ok...Dumbo. Yes the original is an old movie. 1941 was a long time ago. Doesn't matter, what it taps into is still as relevant emotionally and culturally now as it was in 1941. Let's see... - Lonely and ostracized over differences. Still a thing... - Stripped violently from mother (or family member) who loves you...uh...don't look to the southern US border in the last two years please - diverse populations come together to celebrate differences and find strength in that gathering...thank goodness we do that still - discover inner strength by embracing your difference as your salvation and learning that by being WHO you are will lead to a better life...oh yeah, that's still around And that's the story of Dumbo. And then it gets updated and doubled in running time so we need lots more than what was in the original. And while that sounds like a bad thing, it really isn't. These Disney remakes are better when they try to do something different rather than just recreate the original. So now Dumbo makes friends with kids rather than a mouse and crows. Of course the crows wouldn't make it (which just shows how people don't really understand the original story - the crows were the only folks BESIDES Disney's mother and Timothy Mouse who embraced Dumbo and they helped him find himself and his strength...and they were african-american. Those crows were NOT racist, even if they employed hollywood stereotypes of the time - wrong then and wrong now, sure...but the characters of the crows are some of the most caring and accepting and empathetic in the movie...quite a statement in 1941 about african americans vs other ethnicities...but I digress). There's also a whole new plot about an evil circus. Go michael Keaton, lol. The new stuff is mostly mixed and doesn't completely land as well as one would hope. The emotions from the original are basically there, although better and more focused in the original. Dumbo is adorable and not Tim Burtonized so that's ok. Did I like it? Absolutely. But I already loved Dumbo and getting to spend more time with him was always a good thing. Shame this film didn't find its audience as its message of acceptance and finding inner strength is a good one.

This review is for the 2019 4K version of Dumbo by Tim Burton. First: Excellent video quality. I'd rate it as reference level. However, I'm a huge Tim Burton fan so I'm biased in that regard. Second: Audio is a Dolby Atmos production. Vocal/dialog is clear and easy to hear. However, like a lot of people who have Atmos set-ups, Disney need to do a better job and engineering Atmos correctly so that you get the most out of its potential. Given the overall production value, I'd say its not a deal killer. Third: Color is amazing. If you have an OLED that is calibrated to bring out every potential color you will be amazed at what Tim Burton has done. Better than 5 star color rendition in my view. Lastly, the story line is a bit direct and hard to get through in places. But, those moments do not overpower the story or blanket the overall enjoyment of the film. Maybe adults will have more of an issue that any kids watching the movie. Overall, I'd recommend the 4K disc and think a lot of people will agree with me that this is an outstanding movie for video enthusiasts and Tim Burton fans.

The BEST of the Disney live action films!

Dumbo is by far the best of the new trend of Disney taking their animated classics and filming them in live action. Dumbo is overwhelmingly sad, and when I saw it in the theater, nearly everyone was crying, but that is not a bad thing. Instead, it's a good thing as you are truly invested in Dumbo and his struggles and the struggles of all around him. By the end of the film, you are filled with hope, and while this may sound cheesy, you TRULY feel an elephant can fly. This steelbook is one of my favorite steelbooks that I own, and I cannot recommend it enough. It's incredible and, no joke, even if I had disliked the film, I would have purchased it just for this steelbook alone. Thankfully, it's one of my top five steelbooks AND a great film. This is a must buy!

I loved watching this movie with my kids just as much as I did watching it the theater as a kid. It still makes me laugh, and cry in almost equal measures, which in my eyes is the make of a truly classic great movie. Of course it would never get made as written these days, so I savor it even more for that. The pink elephants section is especially iffy for parents who have trouble talking to their kids. I used it as a good teaching point on the issues and problems with alcohol and it really seemed to make an impact, because we still discuss it whenever we go out to dinner.

Why did I wait so long to watch this movie? I was hesitant because I loved the original animated version that I watched as a child. But now as an adult I don’t support seeing wild animals living in zoos and circus. So it took some time before I decided whether or not to even buy the DVD. And then when I did, I didn’t watch it for another month, how stupid of me. I won’t spoil it by telling you how the movie ends, I’ll just say it ended much better than I ever could have dreamed of. thought And when you figure in the fact that this remake is done by Tim Burton, I honestly didn’t know what expect. I highly recommend it. Great job Tim Burton.

I have been skeptical of the Disney Remakes. I think they should leave them alone. But I was pleasantly surprised by this one. It was an original story. And though there were some similarities to the original cartoon - I enjoyed the fresh look. That being said - it was more heart wrenching than the original, and the full song of 'Baby Mine' isn't included... but all in all - I was very happy. I saw it for the first time on a Disney Cruise Ship and it is GLORIOUS in 4k. Definitely a must see!

I have always loved the animated version of Dumbo, so I had my doubts about another Disney animated feature made into a live-action film. I was pleasantly surprised that Dumbo was actually a wonderful film. It has an excellent cast and a director I love. Tim Burton films are a little dark, in a good way, but they also have a rich depth of emotions he brings to his films. He brought all of his creativity and heart to Dumbo. I highly recommend taking the time to watch this film. It will not be a waste of your time. Instead, it will be an enjoyable break from reality.

I really went in blind when watching this for the first time. My standards weren’t really high or anything but I was surprised with how I treated I was. & that’s rare for live action disney films. The cast was great and graphics were beautiful. It’s very different from Tim Burton’s usual style of filmmaking but it’s nice to see Eva Green, Danny Devitto & Michael Keaton return yet again with the film maker. Highly recommend this steelbook edition.

Tim Burton movies are one's you either love or just don't get. I happen to be a fan and will watch whatever he creates and find value in them all. (Except for Sweeney Todd, which he literally and figuratively butchered.) Usually it is the unique viewpoint and mood of his pieces. This movie is a mixed bag since we loved the original growing up, despite it politically incorrect crows (that we loved as well.) He has tried to place a twist on the classic and has partially achieved what I assume he set out to do. But I am not sure why Disney is deciding to remake every classic, when they did not beg for a remake. (I know it is primarily about the money.) There are worse ways to spend an afternoon.

    Unnecessary, but Ultimately Heartwarming

I was negative forty-six years-old in 1941 when Walt Disney released his fourth (and shortest) animated feature, Dumbo, a mere forty-five or so days before the attack on Pearl Harbor. To watch the original animated feature now is to see little more than simplicity and a cautionary tale about bullying, but in the wake of the context in which it was received initially it could certainly be perceived that a simplistic escape mixed with a prevailing underdog (or elephant) story might have been exactly what the country ordered. The question then posed to director Tim Burton's new, "live-action" take on the film is what might it mean to those who decide to take in this new experience? What is peculiar about choosing the 1941 film for an updated re-imagining is the fact it is without doubt an experience that will not hold the same nostalgic meaning for the majority of the audience that ventured out to 2017's Beauty & the Beast nor does it feature any of the explicit technical wizardry of 2016's The Jungle Book. This is the latest film in a string of Disney re-makes that, at their best, can be soulful and moving (Pete's Dragon) and at their worst can be derivative and dull (Alice in Wonderland), but while Dumbo comes to us from the same auteur who ushered in this recent craze with that aforementioned "worse-case scenario" that is Alice in Wonderland, Dumbo seemingly finds Burton not necessarily taking note of what others have done with similar opportunities, but more investing himself more wholeheartedly in the material; caring as much about the themes and ideas that populate his world as he does the design of the world itself. Burton is often referred to as a "visionary"director and this comes more from the fact he has a signature style than it does the fact he's consistently innovative or wise beyond comprehension, but while-as with many of his more recent endeavors-the sheen may have worn from Burton's visual prowess, Dumbo is something of a welcome return in that it is a streamlined, inoffensive, and largely harmless tale that simplifies the more recognizable themes Burton has worked in throughout much of his career. Sometimes simplicity is what's needed, what's necessary, and what connects viewers to material more effectively. Burton's Dumbo doesn't break any new ground, but it does keep the emotional beats intact, preserving their poignancy. Who knows, maybe a simple reminder about placing yourself in someone else's shoes is exactly what the country needed right now even if we didn't order it.

I loved this live version of the Dumbo story. It was great if you keep an opened mind. The story does not mirror the original and I think that was a great call. On the live version we get to see a back story on the mom. You’ll see a happy ending. They took the part where Dumbo gets drunk and replace it with a different story. The best part you still see the pink elephants.

Bought this movie as a present for a coworker who was on medical leave. Best Buy asked me to review this movie but since I haven’t seen it, and my coworker didn’t ask me to stay to watch the movie, I can’t give it a rating. It did make my coworker smile and be super excited if that helps. Edit to add: I wasn’t allowed to submit this without a rating. So I gave it 5 stars since it made my coworker happy.

This "live" action version of DUMBO is and is not what you might expect. The beginning is cute like the cartoon but then escalates into a dramatic adventure. The actors and computerized animals are all fantastic, but there is a lot more depth and development to the story than the original classic version. I like this movie very, very much, but I LOVE the original lighthearted film the best.

I'm not one to follow in the footsteps of Rotten Tomatoes. RT didn't score this one very well, however I beg to differ. Me personally, as a fan of Disney and the classic, I though this was a great reimagining and fun to watch. Loved the message, the imagery and much more. Highly recommend and beautiful steelbook

So, first off, I did love this film. The only reason I didnt give it 5 stars was because I wasn't over the moon wow's by it. It's a new take on Dumbo with a decent story line that the original film lacked making it more appealing to a broader audience. There are lovely little easter eggs in the film paying homage to the original which is nice. Extra features are entertaining and it's fun to see Michael Keaton and Danny D acting side by side again. Did I mention Dumbo is just the cutest thing ever?????
