I find it useful to remove and vacuum lightly the dust bunnies that accumulate around it. Filter lasts about a year. At about $70 bucks that less than $10 a month

OEM Replacement Part

Works great, easy to install. You can find generic replacement filters, but if you pay that much for a Dyson, why risk the filter? Very happy that Best Buy carries these.
