Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool Formaldehyde - HP09 The Dyson filter/fan/heater/air purifier is made in the same form as the older style Dyson fans. The oval shape used to be used as an airfoil to multiply the air it moved. In the case of the newer units it’s just a shape. There is nothing wrong with this unit having a familiar shape for Dyson. But it does not use the airfoil to add air to the output. The output is flat on the front of the face, with an added output on the side rear of the design. This unit can reverse the flow of air from a front facing fan (I’m going to call it a fan from now on, you know it’s much more than that). To a rear facing fan with a wider range of flow. It can oscillate from, None, 45, 90, 180 and 350, almost a complete circle. While in night mode the display dims and the fan spools down to 4. At that speed it is almost completely silent. I measured the air flow at 2 settings, they were the settings I would use the most, they were measured at 2’ from the front of the fan. Setting 5 had an airflow of 295ft/min, setting 10 was 610ft/min. These readings did not change when I placed tape over the rear opening of the airfoil. There is a very slight feel of air moving in the center of the airfoil, but it is not adding anything to the overall output. It really can’t add anything because the output is on the face, it’s not part of the airfoil. Although I think this is a little misleading on the part of Dyson to share the design features of the multiplying fans, they don’t come right out and say this is an air multiplying unit. So in the end it’s just a design choice, it looks like a Dyson. In the manual it states a cooling mode. This unit does not have a cooling unit. Read carefully and you’ll find they do state the cooling mode is just a fan. It has a heating mode and it works great. Most space heaters hardly move any air at all and take forever to heat a small room. This unit adds a full size space heater within the unit so it will heat a room fast. I tried this out as a test run and let me say I was impressed at how fast it added heat to a room. And not just right in front of the heater. With the fan on and oscillating brought the room up to the set temperature in just a few minutes. This is going to be very nice in the winter. One thing about the heat is you must use the remote to turn on the heat. Something about having the heat controlled by the app was not allowed. The remote attaches magnetically to the top of the unit, don’t lose it. The filter life is not in the manual, it only states that the unit will tell you when they need to be replaced. As of this writing NO replacement filters are available for the HP09. Going by the cost of previous models I’m guessing around $80 and will probably last about 6 months depending on use. It has a sleep timer that I use the other way around. I set it for how long I want it to run while I’m working. So they call it a sleep timer, it’s just a timer, works either way. It has a HEPA H13 filter. This is in the hospital grade level filtration. It has the ability to remove VOCs. I can tell you it works. We painted a small room in our house 6 months ago and every morning I could smell the paint, low VOC (NOT). I placed the filter in that room and left it run all night. In the morning the smell was completely gone. And to date it hasn’t come back. But I’m ready to put it back in there if I need to. Some of the filters are not supposed to be replaced but without Dyson having this information on their website I don’t know for sure if they are some of the ones installed the first time or if there internal. For the price, if it were just a fan, or filter, or heater, it would be out of range, even for Dyson. But this unit has all of that plus real filtration up to hospital grade. Once you add in everything you get Dyson is only padding it a small bit. And I’ll bet in 6 months the price will be even better. One last thing, it can tilt forward or back 10 degrees. So it can push air around in larger rooms. For a full set of instructions just search Dyson HP09, you’ll find it online even if Dyson doesn’t have it on their US web site yet.

I’ve never owned an Air purifier myself but considering the current situation and that it’s good to have anyways I figured I’ll give this a try. Inside the box you get the device , a remote to control it and the filters. On the device it has a screen that tells you the air quality , temperature, humidity and other stuff as well. You can also download an app to use with the device but I don’t have WiFi so I haven’t tested that out. It also is a heater and fan so it’s great to use for that as well if you don’t want to put the heat on or the AC.

The heat in my apartment unfortunately broke and I needed a solution. I live in a small studio apartment in NYC and this little device genuinely kept me warm at night. My air does seem more clean and filtered. I have asthma and mostly work from home and I do notice a tangible difference. I like that I can look at the stats from the fan on my phone through the app. It's an expensive product but it really is wonderful. I'll definitely be using the cool setting in the summer, too. If you have the $$ it's worth buying.

I really like this Dyson Purifier HP09. While I can’t say how pronounced the formaldehyde is in our home, I have a lot of allergies, and anything that promotes a improved air environment is welcome. Before I get into the purifier itself, I have a general observation. Dyson definitely has well thought-out products. We have a Dyson hair blower, one of their vacuum/handvacs, and now this Purifier. They all work very well, and all have an abundance of features. And it doesn’t hurt that the HP09 purifier has an attractive design. Getting into the review, let me point out that this unit also has a good number of built-in features. I have never owned an older Dyson purifier, so I can’t compare the HP09 to their older generation or to other competitors’ products. Reading through all the accompanying literature, a Dyson pamphlet offers cautions to where this unit should not be used. It is not intended for bathrooms, laundry areas and similar indoor locations. From my readings, wet or high-humidity areas should be avoided. Further, you should not run the cord under carpeting, or cover it with throw rugs, runners, or similar coverings. Thus, if you were thinking about buying this unit to heat and cool your bathroom, they don’t recommend it. Installing the filters that accompany the unit was a breeze. A thin filter is attached first and clicks into place. This is followed by the larger formaldehyde filter and the outside shroud. In all, this took less than a minute to complete. Once installed, I plugged the unit in and turned it (there is a power button on the top front of the unit’s housing). Once powered on, I installed the Dyson App on my phone and created a login/password. By doing this, I was also registering the unit with Dyson. Accompanying the unit is a small, feature-packed remote about the size of my palm. Since there are so many features to this unit, I’m only going to touch on some of them. These features include: • Power on/off button • Information button – There is a small display window on the front of the HP09. Each time you press the information button, it cycles information on that window. • Fan Speed (from 1 to 10) • Heater Control (instead of fan speed, this controls how hot the air is coming out of the unit) • Switch to Cool button (This toggles the unit from heat to cool, if you have the heater on) • Auto – If Auto is on, the HP09 will automatically monitor the surrounding air for particulates that need purifying. If no bad particulates are found, the HP09 in Auto mode will turn itself off. • Oscillation on/off • Airflow direction Oscillation was simple to set up. Using the phone app, oscillation can be set up to be Off, 45 degrees, 90 degrees, 180 degrees, and 350 degrees. If Off, then the unit will not oscillate back and forth as it works. If On, it will oscillate back and forth from 45 degrees to as much as 350 degrees. Using the app, you identify a starting point from where the oscillation begins. It was very easy to set up. Scheduling is another handy option. I have ours set to automatically turn on at 7am and to turn off at 10:30pm. And like clockwork, it does exactly that. I also have Auto turned off because I want it to be working irrespective of whether it finds particulates or not to take advantage of the fan. I did play with the heat option for a few minutes and decided that I would revisit that when the weather is cooler outside as it got very hot very quickly. Keep in mind that Hot turns on a heater to a user-specified temperature, while the Cool option moves air around like an overhead fan but does not chill like an air conditioner. While the HP09 is heating and cooling oscillating fan, its main function is to trap allergens and to destroy Formaldehyde. The (i)Information button on the handheld remote – as I mentioned earlier - lets you step through an informational screen to see what particulates it has encountered to give you comfort that the air has been successfully cleaned. It should remove 99.95% of particles as small as 0.1 microns from the air. Regarding the filters, Dyson claims the catalytic filter regenerates over time, while the HEPA+Carbon filters will need to be replaced. The Dyson HP09 has a sensor that can detect and destroy formaldehyde – “a colorless gas released by some house cleaning products, paints, wallpapers, and even some furniture and wood products, and can cause irritation to the nose, eyes and throat when it builds up over time”. Not sure about you, but sometimes I wonder if the house is causing that headache or stuffy head, or is it something on the outside. Formaldehyde can cause individuals to experience adverse effects such as watery eyes; burning sensations in the eyes, nose, and throat; coughing; wheezing; nausea; and skin irritation. How bad are the particulates? Your phone app’s main page provides helpful information and ranks the Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) status of the room by color. The VOC colors are as follows: • Green Color – Good, with a rating of 0-3 • Yellow Color – Fair, with a rating of 4-6 • Brownish Color – Poor, with a rating of 7-8 • Red Color – Very Poor, with a rating of 9+ Note: I am mostly color blind, so cut me some slack if I got any of these colors wrong. And lastly, for those of you who want their home products integrated with Alexa, Google Assistant or Siri, this product can be integrated with each of them. I use Google Home and can now turn the unit on using the Okay Google command to turn the Dyson Fan On or Off (I named the HP09 “Dyson Fan”). In summary, this is a very nice product. It is attractive, the oscillating fan is more than adequate to cool the room, and it does so very quietly. Plus and foremost, it protects against allergens and formaldehyde. While no doubt on the expensive side, I’m glad we have one protecting us. I am giving this HP09 a 5-star review.

    Dyson Design over function

Design Overall design is similar to the Dyson bladeless fan. It looks like engineers took the fan and adder filters to the base and call it a day. I like the fact the Purifier can be adjust at an angle. So instead of being parallel to the ground the air flow can be pointed/angled upwards. Im not sure if this is supposed to happen but there is something loose inside the fan. When I got the fan out of the box sound like a piece fell off inside. Software Connecting the Dyson Purifier was surprisingly simple. Download the app, register/sign in, apps searches for device, then it was connected. (I’m using Surface Duo Phone FYI). Overall, you can control 95% of the function on the app (fan speed, rotation, auto, etc) however this is the big MISS. YOU CAN NOT TURN ON THE HEAT FUNCTION FROM THE APP. I DON’T KNOW HOW THE DESIGNER MISSED THIS. Function The heating function works well. Takes about 10 second for the fan to heat up. So far I’ve had the fan on auto detect mode and it hasn’t turned on to “clean” the air. Its kind of hard to measure how far the fan will oscillate. 45/90/180 degree. You can select the fan to move the air forward or backwards this is a nice feature. Overall the Dyson design is sleek and looks pretty cool in my room, but function and cost plays a big factor in me not recommending this device. If you are looking for an air filter or purifier you can by 2 or 3 devices that do the same if not better job in “cleaning” the air. If you are looking for a fan or heater you can find something better for a lot less.

Hi there, this is Kelly with Dyson. Thank you for taking the time to share your review of the new Purifier Hot+Cool Formaldehyde - HP09 - Smart Tower Air Purifier, Heater and Fan. Our newest machine features intelligent sensors, on-machine LCD display and connectivity to the Dyson Link App. The sealed HEPA filter captures pollutants, odors and gases, and the catalytic filter destroys formaldehyde in the home, which can be caused by common house items such as paint, nail polish, flooring or even new furniture.

It sounds unusual that you have something loose in or on the machine, right from the box. There should not be any loose or unconnected parts. With regard to the software, and using the Dyson Link App to control the heat, this is not a design issue or flaw. Dyson Air Purifiers are compliant with safety standard UL 1278, as required by the US Government. As a result, heating and temperature control outside of the cooling fan mode are not available via the Dyson Link app for heater models. We would in that case recommend using your machine's remote control in instances where you wish to utilize the heater functionality of our machine.

We would value the opportunity to learn more regarding your experience as we are committed to customer satisfaction. Please feel free to email us at askdysonUS@dyson.com. It will be our pleasure to provide support.

Extremely impressed with the device. Fan is ultra quiet and the heating feature is a bonus since we didn't expect it to actually warm up a small bedroom. The formaldehyde sensor was the main reason for our purchase since we bought a house from an owner who smoked for 30-years. App works well and scheduling the Dyson makes it easy to set & forget.

Lack of Clarity About VOC Filter Effectiveness

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I was concerned that the filters was not actually able to filter out VOCS due to the molecules being smaller than what HEPA filters out, and lack of detail about the molecule size that the carbon filter filters. It also only filters a space of less than 200 sq ft which is a lot less than purifiers from competitors that have better filters and more sq ft coverage for hundreds of dollars less per month.
