Not so good of a product
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is the 3rd one my son has had. The USB plug in port becomes weakened with plugging and unplugging it. And the cord will not stay plugged in. And for the price we paid it is not worth it. I am happy that Best Buy has replaced it for us. But I will not recommend it to be purchased from others.

Very Impressed
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The last game capture device I bought was a Dazzle (by Pinnacle) and boy am I glad I upgraded. This Elgato one is very high quality and has a ton of capture options, including my most coveted 1080p capture. There are a couple features I will admit that I wish it had, but for the price I feel quite happy with everything it does offer. Pros: [+] Supports every gaming platform I tried connecting: Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, Wii U, Wii, GameCube, N64, SNES, and of course basically any device that outputs in analog. Depending on what you're doing, some HDMI devices will not work when they are HDCP encoded, so you can't try to put a Blu-ray in your Xbox One and capture from it. Not a big deal to me since I really did buy this for game capture. [+] Supports all of the most-common capture resolutions: 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, 480i [+] Out of the box has support for HDMI in as well as component/composite in, as long as you have updated their game capture software (free) to the latest version. It's especially cool that the same component adapter can be used for composite input by just plugging the yellow video cable into the red component slot. [+] The free included software is quite nice, and while not perfect, WAY better than Pinnacle's included capture software that I previously used with my Dazzle. It seems stable and has never stuttered or produced a bad video. I haven't used the editing portion of it much, however, as I prefer to capture the video from there then import it into Adobe Premiere/After Effects. [+] Capture quality. My 1080p videos look amazing! The quality of each frame looks just as it does playing uncompressed on my TV. And there are many selectable quality options to choose from in case you want to sacrifice some quality for lower file size. I put the slider somewhere between the middle and high quality, and it still looks nearly perfect! Cons: [-] Only supports up to 30fps, so while many games output in 1080p60, you will only capture in 1080p30. If you're uploading to YouTube, this shouldn't be a deal-breaker though as YouTube currently doesn't support 60fps anyway, and they will get transcoded into 1080p30. But I'm sure in the future they will support that and it would be nice to have this device be more future-proof with 60fps support. [-] Don't forget to close the capture software. I unplugged the capture device from the USB input and left my laptop. Then I came back several hours later to find it running hot as heck. Even if you disconnect the device and there is no active video feed to your PC, it will run up your CPU just the same and prevent it from falling asleep. So you need to remember to close out the software all the way when done using it. [-] Doesn't support S-video input out of the box. They have an adapter listed on their website you can buy to add S-video support, but it is currently out of stock and I can't find it for sale ANYWHERE (not amazon, ebay, etc). [-] Can't be used for live streaming or to game on your laptop/PC. The video capture feed has a delay of about 5 seconds (even if you are just feeding it 480i). So the "live feed" preview is completely unusable if you want to look at that instead of a separately connected display device. Conclusion: Not perfect, but for the price, really pretty satisfied! I'm hoping sometime soon they can release an updated device that addresses the four cons I listed above, and they would easily have another sale from me, even if they priced it higher. I can't find any device at any pricepoint that does everything I want yet, so for the time being, this seems to be the best option out there.

Returned to store
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Purchase for my teenage kids. They could only record video but no audio. Maybe they did not hook it up right or needed a different mic set up but they became frustrated with it.

Operating System information on box is Wrong!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This was purchased for my son as a Christmas gift because it was on his list. I researched the item and on the back of the box it says you must have Windows 7 or later in order to use this item. My son has Windows Vista and we quickly found out, after the drivers would not install, that you need to have Windows 7 or newer. There is clearly a misprint on the box because when you visit Elgato's website it states something completely different than what is on the box itself.

Best capture device on market period
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This my first capture card and i didn't think it would be so easy to record my game play or stream. The thing i was surprised most by when i first opened the box was the size, it's about the size of my smart phone. It has no power supply so less wires. Pretty simple to set up and start recording. The software is great and easy to use, this device size and features set it apart from others alike. Works with all systems, if you are considering in buying a capture card this is a must buy. Records in quality, check it out for yourself, youtube is animusgam

Great device, not so good for cable management.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Purchased an ElGato months ago, extremely easy to set up and use. The software that comes with it, The cable management is the only difficult thing about this. There are ports on either side of the device itself, so cable management and tucking this device away is the most difficult thing if you don't like wires anywhere in visible range. The internal capacity for all the HD recording is great, I have yet to go in to delete unwanted clips or recording after months.

Does exactly what it says.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Well, this is the best capture device on the market for good reason. It supports pretty much every console from the NES on (no RF cable support but really, who uses RF in this day and age?). The only thing is you'll need Windows 7 or better and a really powerful PC to be able to use it to the fullest extent (unlike Hauppauge products, this does NOT support Windows Vista or older Windows OSs). Great quality and the software is getting better now that a new version of this capture device (Elgato HD Capture 60) is out in stores now (sadly, the HD60 only supports HDMI, no analog). Best part is I no longer need XSplit to stream, unlike with Happauge's PVRs. So I can finally kick XSplit and Hauppauge to the curb. Great capture device despite the price.

Excellent Game Capture
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was in the market for a game capture card because I wanted to start making YouTube videos. I started with the Roxio it was only $65 and had decent reviews. It was slow and choppy and the software to make the videos was horrible. Well you get what you pay for, and the Elgato Game Capture is worth the price! Set up is so easy! HDMI cable from the TV into it, then another HDMI from the game capture to the Xbox.(or PS3) And a USB plug in to the computer/laptop. I have a Mac so I can easily access my laptop when its right next to my 360. The software is user friendly(must install from the website) and the graphics are crystal clear while recording with no consequences on gameplay on your TV. Another good thing is live commentary, instead of having to record the gameplay then add commentary later. Overall for the value, it is a great recording device, and I recommend it highly.

Best Game Capture Device
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I recently got fed up with my HD PVR 2 (check my almost horrible review for it) and began looking online for newer game capture devices to record some MInecraft videos on my Xbox 360. I had my mind set on the Roxio HD Pro but when I read that this device could record your voice live, I was highly intrigued. I had been recording my voice over Audacity which worked great but I had to have the HD PVR 2 software ready to record and also have the Audacity program open. I would then click record on the recording software that was included with the HD PVR 2 and wait a few seconds then hit record in Audacity. Later I would have to match up my voice to the video which was not necessarily difficult but, a cumbersome ordeal that should not have to occur. Basically, all you should have to do is hit a button and it should record your video and your live voice a the same time. A simple concept but, only prevalent in the Elgato. SOLD! The Elgato is extremely easy to set up, with having an HDMI run into the input of the device and then running the output to your TV. A mini USB to USB cable runs from the device and then into an open USB port on your computer. That is it. The unit does not require an AC plug because the power runs from the USB cable from your computer to the device (so you would have to have your computer on, obviously). HD PVR 2 had several cables running about. I then downloaded the software as instructed and was recording in about 10 minutes. I found that the recording software is very basic but, that makes it really simple to use and there are links all over the interface that will teach you about how to use it if your interested. It also has some other cool features like recording backup. Basically, if you made that one amazing move/headshot/achievement or something that you know you would never be able to pull off again no matter how hard you tried, you would be able to 'go back in time'/rewind to an earlier part that you weren't recording and begin recording. You'd never miss that one opportunity again! The interface is simple and clean and is easy to use because it makes sense. When you download and use it , you'll know what I'm talking about. The editing is very basic (chop and upload). Didn't matter for though, because if you're really serious about editing, you'll have a program like Sony Vegas. Overall, if you're a serious game capture pro or if you're a first timer, you'll get the Elgato. Its simple, fast, easy, efficient, has the ability to record your voice while recording video, can live stream, and is also super compact for gamers on the go. If I would've known about this before that 'other' one, I wouldn't have had to waste my life away with frustration. If you're looking for consistency with awesome quality vids, buy this game capture device!
