I have not tried regular alkaline batteries, but didn't want my alarm to fail due to the cold (the sensor is inside the freezer) with regular alkaline batteries. All is still working so far.

It is in a difficult place to get to so having a battery with long life is desirable and these do last longer than alkaline.

Regular alkaline batteries will not work when the temperatures get low. These batteries still work at low temps. They also hold their power for a longer period of time.
