Epson Experience
||Posted . Owned for 5 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Not at all what I excited. Lamp blow out in 3 months. The picture is great when its working. I had issues with a weak signal for my movie room. Generally I like Epson products but this one is not the quality I expected.

Shockingly Good
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have owned many projectors in the past with my most recent being a Sony VPL-VW600ES from 2014. That projector was $15K and while it used a true 4K panel it did not offer any HDR support. I jumped a year too early. Once HDR became a thing I didn't use projection and have been using TVs ever since. When the opportunity arose to give the Epson Home Cinema 3800 a shot I figured "Why not?". Let me just say that my expectations were pretty low going in as I couldn't see how a non-native 4K panel at this price point would come even close to the Sony I had been using from five years ago. Well, let's just say I couldn't have been more wrong. The Epson HC 3800 exceeded all expectations and was a true eye-opener as to how far projectors have come over the last few years. Let's start by getting one thing out of the way. The Epson does not use a true 4K panel, but a 3LCD setup with what they call PixelShift to approximate 4K. Epson isn't the first to deploy this kind of technology as JVC has done it for years in their higher end projectors before making the final jump to true 4K. I'll admit I had never seen it in person before and went in with the bias that it was 'fake' 4K and couldn't possibly be as good as the real thing. After all, I needed to justify the crazy money spent on my Sony for true 4K. Turns out I was wrong. Now I am sure with a truly high end screen one could see the difference, but the Epson HC 3800 convinced me I was watching true 4K with 4K material playback. The detail was there with minimal aliasing that can sometimes be seen when using lower resolutions to mimic higher resolutions. I will also say the lens setup that Epson is using is all glass and quite good, but does create a tad bit of softness no matter how hard you try to dial in the focus. I did not use any keystone correction which can digitally alter the output. The lens controls are fully manual and include both horizontal and vertical shift, focus, and zoom. The manual controls are solid and allow for fine adjustment with ease. Motion processing is another key area of importance and especially so given the 1080p 3LCD design. The two HDMI 2.0 inputs supports both HDR10 and HLG, but sadly no Dolby Vision support. Material in both SDR and HDR10 at either 24fps or 60fps plays back stutter free with minimal judder on pans. Latency is also good enough that I was able to play Halo 5 from my Xbox One X with no perceptible lag. Motion in general is smooth with no noticeable ghosting effect which is great considering the LCD origins of the projector. I have also read online that the projector does not offer true wide color output (BT.2020 or DCI-P3) and is mapping color to the tried and true BT.709 standard. I cannot confirm this. I know that the 3800 accepts 10-bit color information and processes at 12-bits, but I have no confirmation of the actual output. I can say that the color looks very good and I did not notice any banding effects so either it is 8-bit dithered or a true 10-bit output. For anyone looking at a projector at this price I am guessing that won't be a deal breaker either way. I projected against a 0.95 High Contrast screen at 106" and all I can say is that out of the box the Epson offered remarkable color and contrast especially at this price point. Black levels were reasonable, but to be fair not nearly as good as my Sony. That said, the light output on the 3800 is pretty remarkable and definitely makes HDR a reality. Highlights pop and provide a really pleasing experience. I measured 56L of output when the lens was set to wide angle at approximately 11'. More than enough output for even ambient light in the room and still provide an enjoyable picture. Keep in mind the screen will have an effect on the ambient light control. The unit is a tad noisy when set to Bright Cinema mode which is maximum output. When set to standard Cinema setting the projector is whisper quiet which means mounting it close by shouldn't be a nuisance. HDR works great in Cinema mode so one shouldn't feel compelled to switch it to bright mode for that. The remote control is solid and offers complete control of the projector minus the manual items. It is backlit as well which is a nice touch at this price. The projector is also armed with speakers which makes setting it up quick and easy for those who just want to use it for sporting events or parties where you don't want to fully integrate it into a home theater. They sound decent enough and worked great for the football I watched with it. I should also note that this projector does support active 3D. It does not come with any glasses and I was unable to test the quality of the output. A nice plus though for those that are sticking with the format as TVs have basically abandoned it. To put is all very simply, the Epson Home Cinema 3800 is a spectacular value and I have no problem recommending it to anyone not looking to spend big money on their home theater. It has definitely reignited the home theater bug in me and I am already trying to decide what I want to do with my basement. Great job Epson on creating a great value proposition and I look forward to seeing what's to come.

Poor experience
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Had this new projector installed and it has a bad lens. 3/4 of the screen was clear and the bottom 1/4 percent of the screen was out of focus. Best Buy install team could not resolve the issue and said it was a faulty device and they did not have any more in stock at any of their stores. Worked out for the best because I purchased a higher end projector at a discounted price.

Good projector

Wow -- not the projectors of yesteryear
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The picture from this unit is stunning. It has been about 10 years since I used a projector setup and the technology has traveled leaps and bounds. No more lengthy bulb warmup wait times, no more noisy fans, The 3,000 lumen bulb in this projector is bright enough for viewing with ambient light (though you really want a dark room to take full advantage of the stunning detail and color). Be forewarned that the mounting holes are spaced 13.5" apart, so many universal mounts will be short by 1.5". At only 15 lbs, this projector can easily be wall or ceiling mounted. Adjusting the picture was much easier than expected. There's a handy reset option if you get carried away with the keystone adjustment too. You can use an optical HDMI cable with one of the ports. Bluetooth audio is another nice feature (if you can live with the occasional sync issues). It takes maybe 30-45 seconds for the bulb to warm up and the auto-input detection means one less remote button to push and it's whisper quiet even after extended viewing. Putting the Apple TV to sleep automatically shuts off the projector too. I haven't tried gaming [for latency] yet because I'm still soaking in the breathtaking picture. Upscaling looks as great as native 4K (to my untrained eyes). The only thing that would make this projector better would be voice integration (which is a silly wishlist feature of mine). A matte finish wouldn't be bad either for those of us who have it mounted lower on the wall.

Faulty product horrendous customer support
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Projection looks great but bluetooth cannot connect to any device. I tried 6 different devices and cleared all connections and always failed to connect. Customer support is a joke as one line refers you to their website which does not help to resolve and the other is open until 4 PM PST. I will be returning this product immediately.
