    Outstanding value for 4K/HDR projector

I have been itching to upgrade to a 4K projector with 3D for some time now. My old Panasonic PT-AE4000U turned 10 this year and it has served me well in the 1080p world. The Epson Home Cinema 3800 is an excellent pixel shifting 4K/3D projector for the money. The projector is very securely packed and includes a good size 38 button backlit remote, not the tiny remote that comes with many projectors. Many control options have direct access to control them on the remote; HDR, Color, Aspect, HDMI input selection, playback controls, test pattern, 3D and many more. Having a button for remote backlighting can come in handy in a dark theater. I actually programmed my universal remote with the 3800 as an additional device and then the remote went into my expansive remote graveyard lol. The only other hardware included in the box are the power cord and batteries for the remote. Disappointing that there are no 3D glasses included, but 3D has definitely fallen out of favor over the last several years and I'm not sure if any projectors include them in the box anymore. There are quick setup brochures in four languages and some other small pamphlets, but no owner's manual. That is pretty standard with most products today since the full manual is very easy to download, saves trees I guess. I removed the packing materials, including foam protection around the lens for shipping as well as a clip-on lens cover, nice touches to protect the delicate lens. Then I hung it upside down from a ceiling mount and located the setting in the menus under Extended to set it to Front Ceiling. There are actually 4 options in that menu for the possible combinations of Front and Rear projection and table or ceiling mount. I did not test the speakers as I have an AVR with full 11.2.4 Atmos speaker setup. The (10W each) speakers do give an added flexibility for other installation scenarios. My old projector was black and I was slightly disappointed that the Epson consumer projectors are only available in white. It is a bit more noticable when the lights are on, but when in actual use it disappears just like my previous black unit. It is a very high quality, sturdy unit with modern styling. It has 2 HDMI ports and 2 USB ports, although one of those USBs is only for a WiFi adapter and the other is only to provide power for HDMI stick devices that require USB power. It does put out a bit of heat from the front vent. The most outstanding feature of 3800 is the 4k image processing and projection, the picture quality and options for tweaking the picture are where it truly shines. It is not native 4k, but it takes a 4k image and creates two 1080p frames and slightly shifts pixels very quickly to produce the appearance of 4k image without the raw 3LCD system being native 4k. Watching 4k films on a 10 foot screen, the resolution enhancements over 1080p with no HDR was awesome. The sharpness and brightness improvements were dramatic over my previous projector. The 3800 is a simply amazing value and comes with a 2 year warranty. I ordered 3D glasses and tried a few titles and they were all super crisp and clear with excellent 3D effects. The glasses paired with the 3800 first time automatically when there was 3D material on screen, just had to power them on. There was a confirmation message on screen after about 5 seconds to confirm the pairing of each. I did not see any artifacts or have any issues, just a high quality 3D experience with great depth and focus. The Epson has an amazing range of color adjustments and comes with some preprogramed presets that are accessible under Image Enhancements. Epson has full control of HDR tweaks for Auto/SDR/HDR10/HLG, including a level; as well as RGBCMY for hue, saturation, and brightness. You have the myriad options to tune the picture to your liking. There are 10 Memory slots to save different picture settings customizations, you could have one for daytime, one for nighttime, one for 3D, one for HDR material, etc. The zoom, focus, keystone and lens shift vertical and horizontal are all manual adjustments using the controls on the projector itself. To get a 4K projector that has those adjustments automated is literally at least 3 times the cost at this point in time. Epson’s Home Cinema 3800 had amazing picture quality for all kinds of video material. I never saw any rainbows or other artifacts from the pixel shifting 3LCD system. The picture was always crisp, clear with excellent brightness and contrast, especially with HDR sources. It is a great value for those looking to upgrade to a 4K projector at a very reasonable price, highly recommended! I was totally honest in my opinions of the 3800 pros and cons, full disclosure this is a review for the Epson Home Cinema 3800 projector that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review.

This is a stunning projector for this size and delivers a picture well above its price point. It has great colors , color accuracy , is very bright and most importantly has pretty good contrast. While it isn’t true 4K (2k pixel shifter with some 4K upscaling) it still produced a clearer picture to me than the other 4K projectors I looked at , Benq Tk850 , Lg Hu70la , even the much more expensive lg hu810p , due to its better contrast and shadow detail. While I did find the 4K projectors sharper , I preferred the picture on this projector more in the end. The sharpness of the 4K seemed most noticeable in streaming device menus , but in actual movie content this one did better. While I wish Epson would update its remote and interface (aesthetically it is literally stuck in the 90s) I did find that I love it and it’s very convenient. The remote has millions of buttons on it making adjustments to the picture quick and seamless. And the lay out of the UI is very clear and organized. It does HDR very well namely because you have the ability to adjust the effect to taste and brightness. I found a lot of other projectors with auto tone mapping and no other adjustments too dark and lacking shadow details but this one allows you to adjust which is very helpful , especially if you want to watch hdr content in a room with ambient light. Fan noise was pretty good. In eco mode , it is very quiet and I think most people would not have much to complain about. In medium and high energy modes however , the fan is quite noisy but the overall pitch is more of a white noise that can still fade in to that background anyways. This overalls didn’t bother me because the eco mode will provide plenty of brightness in a dark room and even in a room with ambient light so I think most people will be using it in the quietest setting. The auto iris overall does a good job but I did at times find it to be a bit slow , jerky , and distracting. You do have options for normal or high speeds and the option to turn it off completely if it bothers you. I still preferred to keep it on high for better black levels and contrast, but I’ll admit in certain instances it is a little annoying. The two main issues I have with this projector is focus uniformity and the Bluetooth. The projector seems to have poor quality control and most units suffer from some sort of focus uniformity. I had to take a couple of units back to Best Buy to find one that was decent enough. My current unit still has the problem but to a much lesser extent and is concentrated to a small corner of the screen that I can live with. It is subtle enough that I only notice it while looking through certain menus , especially with letters , where you can see the image isn’t as sharp. But when watching videos I can’t see it , even up close to the screen. The Bluetooth is a little disappointing as it seems to like to connect to certain speakers. It had no problem connecting to my receiver and to a jbl portable PA speaker I have , but did not want to connect to my sony wh1000xm4 headphones , or my bose portable home speaker. When the Bluetooth did connect it worked very well without any av sync issues. For the other two devices I just used my Google chromecast tv to connect and it worked well again without any av sync issues which made me happy(lg hu70la had major av sync problems with Bluetooth?) Despite the Bluetooth issues and the focus uniformity problems , I still recommend this projector as I can’t seem to find another one that will give you a better picture , contrast and color and connectivity in a projector this size ? Maybe some would prefer the benq tk850 but the innacurate color was a deal breaker for me personally while the ht3550 was too dark as I’m not using this in a dedicated home theatre. Overall great projector. Would be even better if it focused perfectly but I still highly recommend it and this one really gave me that movie theatre feel the most for a projector of this size.

I spent quite some time researching and comparing a few 4K "enhanced" and "true" 4K projectors including Epson, Optoma, LG and BenQ, in the same price range, and I'm glad I went with Epson 3800. Although Epson 3800 is not a native 4K projector, I'm impressed with the picture quality, contrast and color accuracy processed and projected on the screen. I think the picture quality is good enough or at least comparable to those native 4K projectors. Color and White Brightness: In my opinion, this might be more important than the "brightness" you see in the spec sheet. Epson claims up to 3000 lumens for both color and white brightness while others only show the lumens for brightness. If you dig into the reviews/testing of other projectors, the actual color/white brightness is much lower than the lumens they claim or either color or white brightness is much less than the other. No Rainbow Effect: 3LCD means no rainbow effect ever, if you're sensitive or tired of it. Lens Shifting: Another reason why I decided to go with Epson. I have a somewhat odd room layout where I can only mount the projector about 20" off the center and about 10" above the top of the 110" screen but I was able to adjust the image without using "digital" keystone at all. Color Space: Color space is less than what other 4K projectors offer and this would be more noticeable if you play 4K/HDR contents. But native 4K projector with full blown color space and accuracy would cost you thousands more. Size/Weight: The projector is heavier and bigger than I thought, something you need to keep in mind for mounting/installation. Noise: Very quiet in Eco mode but fan noise/hissing sound gets much louder in Mid/High power mode. Quality Issue??: If you research, you will see some discussion about the focusing issue. When I first installed, I couldn’t get the focus adjusted for the entire screen, blurry image in either right bottom corner or top left corner. I don’t have this issue with my second unit.

So far so this projector has succeeded my expectations in terms quality and build. I am a solid 10 hours into using it. I have some experience with projectors at work but never a movie projector so this was somewhat familiar to me, yet still anew. First of all, the only small ding i would give this product was the packaging, nothing flashy, nothing that excited me to use the product, very practical. That aside, my doubt was immediatly erased when I lifted up the projector to feel how heavy duty it was. It's sold build gained my confidence back! I had use some other projectors in my past and this is by far the most solid one I have seen. Hooking up this beast was a breeze too, anyone who has a novice level of technical understanding can install this, the only thing that was somewhat discouraging was the amount of HDMI ports, I think there should be double what is offered (2 are onboard). The touchpad to power on the device is also pretty straight forward. The last but certainly not least part that really delighted me about this projector was its quality, it is movie theater quality in every aspect. I also ran my game console through it and it beamed out a top notch product. The sound was easily diverted to my soundbar too. If you are looking for a good cinema projector please use one of this caliber compared to a "data" projector. All in all, due to this projector's quality build and sound picture quality, i would highly recommend this product.

Great budget 4K home theater projector

When I finally had space for a large projector image, I looked into upgrading from my trusty Optoma HD20 (still a great 1080 projector) to a budget-friendly 4K projector. I initially tried the BenQ TK800M because of good reviews and lower price, but I should have heeded that it is described as a “Sports” projector. The image was sharp as a tack, and colors quite bright, but it didn’t handle dark colors well, and there was often distracting banding in skies, even after calibration. So I returned the BenQ and looked for the best-reviewed 4K home theater projector, and came up with the Epson Home Cinema 3800. It fit my (slightly revised) budget, worked great in my space, and delivered an excellent cinema image for UHD movies, streaming content, and gaming. I’m very happy with it, and recommend it (or the slightly less expensive Home Cinema 3200) as great entry-level 4K Gome Cinema projector. Pros: Great 4K (well, FauxK) image for home theater viewing, good blacks, HDR. Flexible positioning (vertical & horizontal lens shift). Includes speakers, though I haven’t tried them. Cons: Fan is noticeable when not in Eco mode. Lens shift may impact overall focus; my top left edge is a little soft, while the rest of the image is sharp—YMMV. Probably best to position with as little shifting as possible. (I only notice this when reading very small text in some video games.)

My most recent projector I owned was an Epson 2045 which I've had used for the past 3 years. And since I've been in the market for a budget 4k projector, I figured it was time for an upgrade. I was debating between this projector and the Optoma UHD50X. And after weeks of researching and comparing the two brands, at last, I was glad I stuck with what I knew worked best, that is the Epson 3800. All I can say is that comparing this to my old 1080p Epson projector was a night and day difference. This projector basically checks off all the boxes as to what you can expect from a budget 4k projector; great 4k picture qaulity, brightness upto 3k lumens, HDR, dynamic contrast, deep true colors, 3D, low input lag for gaming, nice speakers and a remote control that lights up. I was also really happy I was able to purchase this projector at a sale price of $1399. It was definitely worth the upgrade!!!

It is an excellent projector with good speakers, 2 HDMI in, great "out of the box image" (colors/tones are spot on) and an audio out jack. Mine had the issue when the left side of the image was in focus but the right side was out of focus. This isn't noticable in movies but it is noticable when projecting Microsoft Windows. My lower tier Epson does not have this issue and from what I read, the Epson 4010 and higher doesn't have it either. I almost kept it, because it's such a great projector but I'm returning it for a Sony WOLED.

Was looking to upgrade to 4K projector from my existing Epson 1060 Home Cinema 1080p projector been using since 7 years now. It still works and a great projector with zero issues. After a lot of research just thought to give a try on Epson 3800 bought from Bestbuy Store on full price. Out of the box and its huge size and weighs alot...started using it and picture quality is great as usual expected from Espon but the same issue I faced which is floated all around the reviews and forums. This projector has edge to edge focus issues....if you focus on center all the corner goes out of focus...and even its not the short throw that means you need to have larger space to get the big enough screen size. Quality of the projector is great feels sturdy and premium material but as said its huge so feels challenging to mount on ceiling...though it has some good features like lens shift etc., apart from issues the price point feels alot...overall I feel epson need to refresh their mid level home cinema series 4k projectors line up as they are all released back in 2019 and now a lot changed in projectors from technology and portability. I would feel worth if we get for $1000 or less and not more than that...Now comes to bestbuy returns policy...it was a shocker for me when I have returned...I was charged $250 as restocking fee which was no where shown while placing the order...I have just used for couple of days and ended up paying restocking fee....what ever the discussion you will have at the returns window they won't remove the restocking fee....so just check their restocking fee details before you place an order and if you think may return if does not work for you....as per my experience any projector you buy from Bestbuy and if you return...gets a huge blow on your face with the restock fee...so look somewhere if you want to buy projectors...

I purchased this to replace my decade-old, 720p Epson Cinema 400. First things first. Compared with the old projector, the brightness is astounding. I am using it on the second of the four brightness levels and can comfortably watch a movie or play a game with ambient light in the room. If I bump to the next brightness, I can watch with the lights on in the room. Even out of the box, the picture is fantastic. The pixel shift technology is remarkable. 4K netflix streams look amazing. Games always look good on a projector (even the old one still looked good to my eye, assuming I kept the lights off). That said, the depth and detail I can see in a game like Fallout 4 is awesome. And gaming in general looks great with great contrast across dark scenes and smooth movement for fast action. Look, I am sure a true 4K projector is impressive, but to my eye I seriously doubt you get twice the projector for twice the price. We're in the category of diminishing returns. For $1500 bucks, the 3800 gives me at least 90% of what I see out of projectors costing $3k. Amazing value, in my opinion. I sweated this purchase for a long-time and I do not think I could have done better.

I have owned this projector for nearly 2 months. It replaces an old Mitsubishi 1080 P. The projector is very bright. The colors are vibrant and the picture is clear. My brother in law and I were watching a film and he says to me "do I have to see the sweat running down the tip of the guys nose?" This again illustrated to me the great detail in the picture. I am the type of person that reads reviews from both professionals and consumers before any purchase is made. Then I continue to read about my purchase. The biggest thing I read from pro reviews is that the projector does not support the full DCI-p3 color gamut. Does it really matter? My iPad Pro does support the full DCI-p3 so I watched Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 simultaneously on the iPad and the projector. The colors were equally saturated on both units. In some cases the projector looked better. There are times when I just look at scenes from movies and marvel at the picture. It does not have motorized focus which I miss as it helps to stand close to the screen when focusing. Again not a big deal as once you focus the projector its done unless move the unit. One more feature that truly helped is the bluetooth transmitter for audio with AptX. My Onkyo receiver does not support HDMI 2 or 4K passthrough. All signals are sent to the projector via Switched HDMI. I use a bluetooth to Digital Optical out unit which is connected to the Onkyo receiver. The projector receives the video and audio via HDMI. The projector connects via bluetooth to the unit that I purchased which connects via Toslink to the Onkyo receiver. Digital Out supports DTS Surround Sound and THX 5.1 Audio. I know it is not Dolby Atmos but there is not a lot of material out there that is Atmos mixed. The addition of 18GHz HDMI 2 ports will ensure the the new PS5 will be covered. In summary this projector does a great job of producing a colorful, clear and Bright picture. No one should be disapointed with this unit.

For the price this is one of the better lower priced faux 4k projectors out there, however there does seem to be a case of focus issues on this model that seem to be hit or miss. The issue is it is almost impossible to get the entire screen focused well. Some units seem to have the issue while others do not, or atleast not as noticeable. If you get one without this issue than it is a great bang for buck projector. This projector can get really bright and the 4k HDR image can be adjusted to look extremely good.

Easy to setup and remote is much better than my old projector. Screen resolution is very sharp, fan is quite, faster starting than old projector. My major concern was picture brightness in a lighted room, like a living room or man cave. But no issues with the picture, it looks very good and bright even with lights in the room turned on, which was a major problem before. Now with full sunlight and lights on, I wouldn't recommend it, but for a normally lighted room it's great. My other options were a $5k Sony or $4k Epson, but decided to try this one and for only $1,400 (on sale) it was a no brainer. If 8K comes out as standard I might get a different one, but for now it's a keeper.

Pictures quality is excellent. Very bright which is perfect if your using it as a TV replacement. I bought this on sale for the same price as the 3200 so unless you need the speakers the slightly higher brightness and higher contrast ratio really isn't noticeable so not worth the extra money in my opinion. 4 stars because although it has horizontal and vertical lens shifting, they are not very fluid. You turn the dial and it doesn't move then all of a sudden it jumps a couple inches. Also it is very difficult to get perfectly ficus on the entire screen. It's only noticeable when words are being displayed.

This is our 3rd projector. All Epsons. Last one was a Home Cinema 2030 with 1080p. It was a great pj at $650 new. At the 3800’s price point, I was expecting a lot of improvement. I will say I was completely blown away at the factory settings right out of the box. It is BRIGHT! Even with a window in our room the image looks incredible during the day. I’m shooting it onto an Elite Screens 1.1 gain motorized 120 from 13 ft away. Lens shift made alignment easy. I only had to tweak the horizontal keystone a bit to get it perfectly centered. LOTS of settings. Recommend reading the online manual (164 pages) and searching the internet for setting advice. Color is pretty good but slightly muted. Turn up the saturation and it looks better. Gaming at 4K was impressive. We have it hooked directly to our Xbox One. Apex and Borderlands both look amazing. Virtually no lag. Upscaling from 1080 BluRay with Image Enhancement ON induced some image noise (Ready Player One). I turned off Image Enhancement and the noise disappeared. Need to play with these settings to get the best for you. 4K HDR disc play (Godzilla: King of the Monsters) is fantastic. I still have a lot of things to tweak but here are my early impressions: PROS Out of the box performance is superb Gaming is perfect. No lag at 4K resolution Easy set up with lens shift Quiet fan 4K UHD movies are superb BRIGHT! Best mode so far is Cinema. Bright Cinema is too much for 1.1 gain screen CONS Lots of settings. Easy to get lost if you don’t know what you’re doing. 164-page manual Some image noise with Image Enhancement upscaling 1080p

This projector is the most cost-effective product for home, I ever compared other 2 products but not 4k resolution, in conclusion , speaking of image quality, please ignore any non-4k products! But, the obvious shortage is, it does not have built-in platform to support 3rd party apps like YouTube , Disney +, etc, however you can still set up Apple TV to make it.

I was debating mounting an 85” UHD TV on a large wall in my great room. Went with the Epson 3800 projector instead. One of the best purchases I’ve made in a long time. I’ve got the projector mounted below the ceiling about 17 feet away. It’s easy to adjust the picture size with a manual knob on the lens, so you can project from a wide range of distances. My picture is about 110” diagonal, crystal clear in UHD. I use an Amazon 4K FireTV stick with YouTube TV for regular programming and sports. I have a large wall of windows behind the projector. The projector is still bright enough to watch movies and sports in the middle of the day, although I do not get direct sunlight on the wall I’m projecting on. My only complaint is the Bluetooth audio lags the picture by a noticeable fraction of a second, so I switched to a hard line audio out from the projector headphone jack directly to my stereo receiver. The sound now syncs perfectly with the picture. Highly recommend this projector. Great solution for a really big picture at an affordable price!

I would recommend this to a friend
