Customers are saying

Customers commend the Home Cinema 880 projector for its excellent picture quality, brightness, and ease of setup. Many found the projector easy to use and affordable, while some noted that the fan can be noisy and that it only has one HDMI input. A few users also mentioned challenges with the zoom and focus features. Overall, the positive feedback on image quality and ease of use outweighs the negative comments regarding the limitations of the HDMI ports and some minor setup adjustments.

This projector claims to be able to render MPEG-4 WMV AVI and other video formats from a USB thumbdrive. It DOES NOT, I spent 2 days with Tech support which was useless TOTAL waste of time. I was very disappointed and even more so when I went to return it to Best Buy and the manager had the audacity to try and charge me a $90 restocking fee. BEWARE

The Epson - Home Cinema 880 projector is a1080p projector that is great for a home theater and can be used in fairly bright environments. I connected an Amazon Fire stick to the HDMI port and watch Netflix APV, Disney, ESPN, etc. on a 120 inch screen. Colors were bright and the picture was clear at 1080p resolution. Sound was adequate. If you need to improve focus, a slider bar is available to adjust. In summary, I would recommend this projector to anyone who wants to create a great large screen experience at a reasonable price.

Upon opening the box, the first thing in the box is a letter that reads “Prepare to be amazed!” The letter explains the 3X higher color brightness compared to other DLP projectors and the benefits of this projector’s high color brightness and high white brightness. The letter continues with a number of other benefits of the projector and ultimates directs the purchaser to visit www.colorlightoutput.com where the projector can be compared to a variety of other projectors. I’m all for positive feedback about the purchase I just made, but there’s only one problem: this particular projector is not included in the list of projectors on the website this letter refers to. The bulky white remote does not include backlit keys but is otherwise easy to use. The built-in speakers are terribly underpowered and weak. If you’re hooking up a laptop, and the projector is at the center of the table, and your Powerpoint has sound effects you might be ok, but watching any type of video with these speakers is barely audible. Best to skip the built-in speakers and connect this projector to a receiver. The alternative is to use the 3.5 mm stereo mini port to connect to external speakers. You’ll likely need to purchase a 3.5 mm stereo mini to RCA cable if you want stereo sound. The quick-start guide suggests how easy it is to mirror your mobile device, but the projector is using a very old standard named Miracast. This standard was dropped from Android devices back in 2015, is not supported by iOS, and is almost non-existent on Windows 10 so I’m not sure why in the year 2020 this standard would be included. Epson should have licensed Airplay or ChromeCast to make this projector useful for modern mobile devices. I enjoy how fast the projector powers on and off, and I enjoy that this is a set-and-forget type of device in terms of image adjustment, alignment and settings. It took longer for me to find an RCA cable for the audio than it did to have the unit powered on, adjusted and ready to “be amazed.” And I am amazed. This projector, while leaving out any bells and whistles, is quiet and projects a beautiful image. With the lights on the image is bright enough to be watchable, but downright wonderful when the lights are powered off.

UNIQUE FEATURES Bright 3300 lumen output 1080p Full HD resolution Good color and brightness uniformity VERY impressive 12000-hour lamp life in Economy Mode USE The projector carries on the tradition of Epson providing a good quality product at reasonable prices. The projector installs like all others. You can either place it on a level, flat surface or flip it upside down and hang it from the ceiling. Unlike other Epson offerings, placement is of particular importance, as this unit does not provide any form of lens adjustment. There is no Zoom, Horizontal, or Vertical lens shift. So, obtaining the desired screen size is determined solely by the distance of the projector from the screen. Placement is also critical, as with all projectors, you want to eliminate the need to make any keystone corrections (though, this unit has both a horizontal and vertical keystone correction, if necessary). The 880 has a limited number of inputs for operation. The only available inputs are USB-A, USB-B, and a single HDMI input. Though, the input selection is quite limited, I personally had no issues. I use an A/V receiver to control input switching, so a single HDMI input is all that is needed. If you don’t have the convenience of a dedicated AVR to do switching and have a lot of different source devices, an HDMI switcher may be in order. Quite honestly, a home cinema-oriented projector is about one thing: bringing the movie theater experience home. This projector, though not perfect, fills the bill nicely. Long story long: I haven’t seen a projector at this price point deliver a picture with this much brightness. Epson rates light output at 3300 lumens at that seems spot on. It can compete with my Epson 5040 and 3800 in terms of sheer brightness. While all is good on light output, the projector does struggle with contrast ratio. Dark colored objects do get washed out fairly quickly, as the unit struggles with fine detail in dark scenes, even with the Dynamic Iris turned on. To be totally fair to Epson, this is an issue that all LCD projectors struggle with to a varying degree. Some do better at it than others. Is it a deal breaker for this unit? No. Quite honestly, if I wasn’t able to do a side by side comparison with an Epson 3800, I may not ever have noticed the extent of the weakness. Out of the box picture quality is quite nice. The default settings are pleasing, without being over-exaggerated. Projecting an image to my dedicated 120” screen showed good brightness and color uniformity throughout the image. Again, the projector does struggle with darkly filmed movies, but can hold its own in bright scenes and sports. On a positive note, this projector handles sports very well. Even though it is only a 60Hz display, I noticed no jagged artifacts during fast sports scenes that even some of the best TV’s can struggle with. Well done! NEGATIVES Fan Noise. The fan on this model is very loud. Much louder than on my Epson 3800 and Epson 5040. I use Bright Cinema and Eco mode during normal use on my 3800. The fan is not unreasonably loud and is drowned out by the noise on whatever soundtrack is on in the theater, whether it be a video game, movie, music, etc., even with HDR enabled. However, the fan noise on the 880 is always present and noticeable. It can be tempered quite a bit by the careful selection of picture modes, but even then, it is roughly twice as loud as my 3800 (not measured with a meter, just a seat of the pants guesstimate). I find the projector very distracting on Bright Cinema, even with Eco mode engaged. The only way I can make the projector quiet enough to tolerate is by using normal Cinema mode with Eco mode selected. Thankfully, brightness is still sufficient, even if the projector loses some pop in brightness and color. Dynamic Iris. Epson uses this technology in many, if not all, their home cinema line of projectors and it is some great tech. In a nutshell, the projector analyzes the video source for brightness. The Auto Iris can limit light output in dimmer scenes. This is an awesome feature that helps to improve the contrast ratio, as all LCD projectors struggle with their black levels. This is kinda, sorta like local dimming on LCD TV’s. It works fairly well in the 880, but it is not without faults. I noticed a good deal of light pumping on fast scenes. Even with the Dynamic Iris setting at fast, it still struggles to find that perfect setting causing the picture to look like it pulsates at times. It seems to lag a little behind the image displayed. Also, the iris mechanism is LOUD. Much louder than it ever is on my 3800 and 5040. Imagine a quarter inch drive ratchet clicking away in the opposite direction of use. Turning off the Dynamic Iris function would eliminate this issue. Firmware. Lastly, this projector needs a good firmware update. I think some of these annoyances can be lessened with a good firmware update. My previous Epson projectors exhibited some of these same issues after installation, though to a lesser degree. Future firmware updates helped shore up a lot of those issues over time. So, I have hopes that Epson can refine this product as well. I’m also hoping a future firmware update will fix the Lamp Life monitor of the machine. The first night alone, the projector was used a good 6 hours, including a mixed bag of video games, movies, broadcast TV and YouTube videos. At the end of the night, the total lamp hours still equaled ZERO. Remote. The supplied remote works well and controls all the necessary functions of the projector. But, I sure would like to see a backlit remote, or even a remote with glow-in-the-dark buttons. The small buttons and print on this remote are nearly impossible to see during a movie. CONCLUSIONS Though this unit is not without it flaws and shortcomings, I think it represents a good product from Epson. The images are bright, vibrant, and have good uniformity. While, the projector struggles with darker scenes, these issues disappear with normal content. Quite frankly, this projector performs better, if not much better, than similarly priced products from Epson’s competitors I’ve experienced. I also feel many of the issues I experienced with this unit could be lessened or eliminated with a well-engineered firmware update. As it stands now, I would give the projector itself a 3-star rating, but the image quality would easily justify a 4-star rating. I will fully admit that I am a snob when it comes to picture quality and it does take a lot to impress me. With that, I do think this would serve as a great entry-level projector for most folks.

    Everyday Projector for content viewing

If you are looking for big-screen entertainment on a limited budget, there is only one solution, a projector. A projector will be the biggest bang for your buck to improve your entertainment options when screen sizes trend greater than 65”. One can easily create screens larger than 90” with a projector, all you need is an empty wall, or a portable screen. That said I was looking to replace my existing Epson 720P projector that I have been using for quite a few years now. This Epson HC880 is a perfect replacement for my old projector. The Epson HC880 Projector features a bright 3300 lumen 1080P resolution that features one HDMI Port, an audio out, USB A and USB B. The projector features an auto vertical keystone, and an easy to use horizontal keystone, which is a highlighted feature of most epson projectors. Should you need to manually tweak the projection to square it up, there are manual overrides as well as adjustable legs to help square the image. The projector bright screen shines through for use during daytime in a moderately well-lit light controlled room, and it is excruciatingly bright at night. The projector can project upto a 250” image on a screen or a white painted wall with no problems, making backyard viewing to entertain family and friends with ease. Couple this projector with your favorite streaming stick (amazon fire stick or roku stick) and an external speaker and you have a very capable content streamer for general use. The projector does have some quirks. For one, this model does not have a manual optical zoom, only an e-zoom feature, which works better to zoom out than to zoom in (which it crops the image to zoom in). In my case, as a replacement projector it would require me to move the HC 880 projector closer to fit my screen, versus, previously I could control the optical zoom as needed. If you need to adjust it, the e-zoom works rather well to fit the screen. If an optical zoom is a required feature, the Epson 1080 would provide you that feature and more. To roughly calculate the screen size, the projected image is roughly the distance between the screen and the projector in inches, so a 50 inch distance between the screen and the projector will provide roughly a 50” screen. To make a 100” screen, your projector will need to be roughly 8.3 feet (100 inches) away from the screen. The other quirk is that the projector is loud! In “bright cinema” and “dynamic” picture modes, the fan is incredibly loud, compared to “game” and “cinema” modes. Infact, in game mode, the colors are quite a bit more muted and with that, the quietest noise from the fan. The overall image quality in Cinema and Bright Cinema are excellent, dynamic mode can have the colors be a bit washed out at times. The onboard sound can drown out the blowing fan, but it's not exactly a movie sound quality audio, but it does well in a pinch. The audio out feature is also a nice feature to have, hook up an external speaker to your projector running a streaming stick and you can have a rather portable content streaming solution. You can also use a USB flash drive (formatted FAT32 to display pictures in JPG), this can be used as a split screen feature with the HDMI input. This is a great projector and I am in love, I don't know why I did not upgrade to 1080P earlier, but 1080P is totally worth it. I have this projector setup to use in my backyard with my portable projector screen and speaker system. The beautiful image quality, the bright colors, and quick easy setup for content streaming makes this quite the hit. This is a great projector for someone in the market for one. Buy it, you cannot go wrong with it. Pros: * Bright, crisp colors, very clear image but sometimes washed out because its a very bright image. * 3.5 mm Audio Out feature * Auto Vertical keystone, very easy horizontal keystone slider * A nice split-screen option to split with USB and HDMI for video (with only one HDMI, it is a little handicapped for the split view - HC 1080 can do both HDMI inputs) * Ability to hook up a laptop via USB A-B connector (not included) and the epson software * Available LAN option via a Wifi USB Dongle (for advanced setups) - wireless projection Cons: * Loud fans in “Bright cinema” and “dynamic” modes * No Optical Zoom feature (digital zoom is no replacement) * Only one HDMI input, no VGA PC input (need a higher model Epson HC1080 if you want that) * No case in the box, but a custom case is available at epson.com

This Epson Home Cinema projector gets the job done in a pinch. The real limiting factor is the 1080p resolution but if you buy it knowing it then this should meet and possibly exceed your expectations. Setup is fairly simple. Plug in the power, connect it (in my case HDMI) to your source (AppleTV), and if you're me separate speakers for better room filling sound, set up a screen (or. flat white bedsheet), and enjoy the show. Keystone correction is easy enough and playing some 4k movies (even though it's shown at 1080p) is enjoyable. The darker you can make the room the better. My only complaint is the built in speakers are weak. Overall, an. enjoyable experience.

This is my first time with a projector and all I can say is wow. Very easy to setup. Table top for me. And adjustments was very straightforward. Be warned you can use with a Good screen and ceiling mount. I decided to use to broadcast my games from my laptop for easy large screen fun. The color range is really good but the bigger you go the more washed out it becomes. My sweet spot was about 100inches if I measured it correctly.

This was my first projector purchase and thing rocks. Truly a home cinema with legendary Japanese Epson quality. Great picture and solid controls. By default it is not in ECO mode, and it is noisy fan, but turn on ECO and it quiets down. Adequate predefined picture options (cinema, bright cinema dynamic, gaming) from the remote. Set up is quick, which is great for those of us who tear down between viewings. The keystone adjustment slider is a snap, and the adjustable tilt leg is well designed. Love the zoom options so that fitting the screen can be done without moving the projector.

Have also streamed w my iPhone using a HDMI adaptor: perfect. Audio;..Has sound that is adequate for a small space (camping) but plug and play w a better speaker for backyard or big action movies. Screen: Have projected on a wall...HUGE garage wall and on a screen outside and inside: perfect! Super bright, for day or night use. Brightness is essentially everything with a projector.
