one of his many collaborations with john carpenter but my least favorite. time does not do this film any favors but it absolutely has some fun campy value. look for the thing or big trouble in little china instead

John Carpenter's Escape From New York was the blueprint for all other action films of the early 80's. Set in the not too distant crime plagued year of 1997, the film is a chilling representation of a new America which has turned into a police state and the entire island of Manhattan is turned into the one maximum security prison for the dregs of a society beginning to crumble. Kurt Russel plays S.D. "Snake" Pliskin, a once highly decorated soldier, now a man sentenced to life imprisonment for a failed bank robbery. But before he is to be sentenced, the President (played by long time Carpenter collaborator Donald Pleasance,) finds himself and his jettisoned escape pod from Air Force one to be the latest inhabitants of a savage New York. The Chief of the United States Police Force (veteran B-movie actor Lee Van Cleef) makes Pliskin a deal, find the President within 24 hrs and Pliskin will receive a pardon for his crimes but there's one catch, the Chief has a technician place 2 microscopic explosive charges in Pliskin's neck which will explode within the 24 hr deadline. It soon becomes a race against time for pliskin to find the President, retrieve a briefcase which was suppose to be delivered to a summit meeting between the Chinese and the Soviets in Hartford, CT of all places, and keep his head from exploding. Escape From New York is one of my all time favorite action/Sci-fi films and was shot for a staggering amount ($6,000,000.) It's the perfect blend of science fiction, a 40s detective noir, and a western to some extent. A must see and own for any fan of such genres.

    Carpenter/Russell at their best

After The Fog, Carpenter teamed for the second time with Kurt Russell (the first being the TV movie Elvis) for this sci-fi/action hit. Set in 1997, the title city is now a barricaded penal colony. When Air Force One is brought down into the city, the Chief of Police (Lee Van Cleef) offers a deal to soldier-turned-convict 'Snake' Plisskin (Russell): Go into the death trap once known as the Big Apple and retrieve the President (Donald Pleasance) and 'Snake' will receive a pardon for his crimes. To ensure Plisskin's cooperation, the Chief implants small explosives inside him, which are set to detonate at the end of the 24 hours Plisskin has to accomplish the task. Once inside, Plisskin finds allies in a cabbie (Ernest Borgnine) and a bizarre couple (Adrienne Barbeau & Harry Dean Stanton) who help him locate the President, now a prisoner of the dangerous, self titled 'Duke' of New York (Issac Hayes). While Carpenter's output has been less than stellar in recent years (including a less than inspired sequel to this film), the film is a reason why he'll always have a nice place in film history.

    Had Such Incredible Potential

'Escape from New York' could have been a huge hit, instead of just the moderate success that it was. Certain scenes of the film are just outstanding, while others are somewhat poor. It is this back and forth contrast that ultimately hurts the film. Nevertheless, still worth a viewing, and fans will love this excellent special edition!

Good movie. This is definitely a movie that needs to be seen on DVD or Blu-Ray. Watching this on regular TV with all the commercials and parts taken off does not do the movie justice. This was a good purchase and the best way to watch this movie.
