The Best Science Fiction Film of the Decade
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Alex Garland's "Ex Machina" is a roller coaster of emotion, terror, and intelligence featuring three fantastic performances from its lead actors, an intricate and never cliche plot, and beautiful cinematography. If you have ever enjoyed the more serious side of science fiction, "Ex Machina" will fill that hole in your life that's been left by years of exhausting action heavy but story light sci-fi fare. Alex Garland made his name as an author with 1996's unforgettable "The Beach" before moving into screenwriting, but nearly everything he's touched has been worth owning. After writing "28 Days Later" and "Sunshine" for Danny Boyle, as well as the woefully underappreciated "Dredd" with Karl Urban, Garland has finally moved on to directing, and he comes out of the gate fiercely with this terrific debut.

To robot or not.
||Posted . Owned for 9 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Remember the movie with Will Smith in it called "I Robot" . This is nothing like that. You have been selected to be a human guinea pig... For a robot. Sounds complicated. Watch to see if i know what I am talking about.

Thought provoking. Sci-Fi excellence
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Not that the genre has ever really gone out of style or ever will, but the last year has seen a number of movies on artificial intelligence. Even the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron deals with evil robots turning on their masters. We get it; the robots will all eventually kill us but can't it be done in a way that we haven't seen before? Can't we be entertained before the robots destroy us? Ex Machina, which marks the directorial debut by 28 Days Later, Never Let Me Go, and Sunshine writer Alex Garland, is exactly the film we've been waiting for. A haunting and thrilling look at technology taken to the ultimate degree, it will make you look at every other movie about artificial intelligence in a whole new way.

Creepy and ambient
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.A wonderfully creepy and ambient film that explores the interactions of man and machine. Oscar Isaac plays Nathan, a reclusive and vulgar social media tycoon, who invites young coder Caleb (Domnhall Gleeson) to his secluded compound for a week. Caleb's purpose is to perform the Turing test on Ava (Alicia Vikander), a cyborg created by Nathan to look and act like a young woman. Also at the compound is Nathan's silent, submissive Japanese assistant Kyoko (Sonoya Mizuno), who holds a secret of her own. But who's testing and who's being tested? Ex Machina is an underrated gem, especially given that it was made on a fairly low budget and with only four main actors. The acting is excellent, the VFX are astounding, and the score fits perfectly. See it.

A movie I enjoyed more than I thought I would.
||Posted . Owned for 11 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I enjoyed this movie, especially the fact that it was a 4K Ultra HD movie. The circuitry of the "machines" & the sound quality therein (Highly recommend a surround sound system!) just makes the movie itself more enjoyable. I did purchase during a sale, so the price was extra nice for the movie, but would have enjoyed it even if I had paid the full price. Officially a movie that I enjoyed more than I thought I would that realistically could take place in the not-too-distant-future.

The Thinking Man/Woman's Movie
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you are looking for action, you might want to look elsewhere. What you get from this is a great look at when we make a breakthrough in science like creating a machine that could pass for human. For the most part this movie focuses on 3 characters, the creator, the outsider, and the machine. This movie is going to make you think, and dwell on some pretty deep stuff. And that is this movies' strength is the conversations between the characters. Otherwise it would obviously be quite a boring movie. Like I said this is relatively no action to speak of and I am saying this for the benefit of those that haven't had the chance to watch this just yet. This is one of the best movies of 2015, and a definite must see for science fiction fans.

This movie should make you think.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a pretty interesting movie considering nothing much physically happens. Majority of it is the internal battle/struggle. Definitely something I think it on the forefront of minds concerning AI and civil rights, liberties, and freedoms of all peoples in general. If you think about it, how much does your phone know about you compared to your "friends?" Your computer? How much attention do you pay to them? Would it be different if they looked like you? At what point do we cease to matter? Would humans be willing to cede power if alternate life was better suited to harmonizing life? Ultimately, it's an interesting depicting on power's wondrous potential and the banality of its abuse.

Excellent Film - Digital only on FandangoNow
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.A very beautifully done and disturbing film. Oscar Issacs is one of the most versatile American actors working today who is completely different in every role he takes on. Only complaint is that the digital version only streams from FandangoNow which is a member of the Movies Anywhere group. Not sure what the point is for being a member if you're not willing to share the film across different members' streaming platforms.

Interesting
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you're expecting a lot of action, this movie is not for you. However, if you can wrap your head around the concept and pay attention as the movie unfolds, I think it's worth the watch.

Excellent Movie Excellent 4K Bluray
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this movie originally on 1080p bluray and enjoyed it very much thought the picture and sound were very good. I got a awesome price on the 4K bluray (9.99) so I purchased it. Wow immediate difference. Firstly check out the outdoor flyover scenes if that doesn't convince you next check out the robots textures. The grid pattern of the body is so superior in detail that it is night and day. I am very happy with this purchase and i got both versions for 9.99 each so really I only paid what would have been original price so I was cool with the double dip. If you are a fan of this movie this is the version to get.

A serene movie that makes you question reality
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought this movie unseen since I did not have a chance to see it in the short run here at our theaters. I was not sure what to expect but what I got was a mind-bending, surreal movie. The plot seems very innocuous but as it unfolds, you see the depth of story and all the characters. Acting is superb and often subtle, keeping your attention as you become emotionally vested. Once it all plays out, you are left in awe and possibly shock. A very intelligent movie that uses perfectly blended CGI to the live action to bring an alternate reality to life. Not recommended for those under 16 since most of the themes will be over their heads and for some of the darker moments. Overall, a stunning film.

Enjoyed it so much I bought it twice
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.A stunning movie I enjoyed so much in the theaters, I bought it twice, once as a DVD, now replaced as a bluray. The film is the kind of scifi that is simultaneously intriguing and challenging to the viewer. It doesn't present you anything in a manner that is confusing or hard to understand, but spreads breadcrumbs at your feet which you follow to more far-reaching concepts as it moves along. It also presents A.I. in a way that is quite brilliant, which I can't say I've ever read or watched anything since thats done so in the same fashion. The acting and the effects are fantastic, further more the film is beautifully shot, well worth watching and owning.

Weird and Strange Movie
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Not your atypical sci fi flick. Was able to watch all of it but never thought yeah I'm loving this movie. Each person is different so I will say give it a try but it wasn't my go to movie.

Lessons in AI Philosophy
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Movie Details - This one went under the radar at theaters, but it is a great high tension movie. The secret meeting, the testing of a new AI, the ethics of creating such machines. It all combines with strong performances from the three leads to take the viewer on a trip. You are left guessing at the end game all the way up to the end. Very few movies do this anymore. Technical Details - The picture is a clean transfer with very little noise in the image and the sound mix adds to the atmosphere of tension in the movie. The outdoor sounds create a stark contrast to the lab, helping set up the frfeedom / prisoner conflict in the story.

By nature or nurture
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This movie takes a complicated topic, artificial intelligence, and brings it into simpler terms. While it starts with two characters who are capable of talking about the developments in technology with the highest expertise, it becomes more of a feel-type movie. The creator does not want to discuss the hardships of his craft, but rather the results. How does she make you feel? She being the artificial intelligence. Much more chiller than Spike Jonze's Her, this story discusses the implications and possibilities, ending in such a way that is both heart wrenching and shocking. I highly recommend this film, it is more than a thought provoker, rather a feel provoker.

A sleeper hit!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Never heard anything about this, but picked it up during the holidays as a want-to-see. Was not disappointed. Terrifically well written modern thriller with some phenomenal CG work. Honestly, this film is creeper even when things are going well. And they don’t always go so well. It does lean on a classic plot (don’t most movies these days?) but the telling is fresh, the acting is pretty decent (although at times a bit overdone) and the story does keep you guessing. All in all, it’s fun on the upper end of drama, bordering on horror (but not quite). Better than a bad night of karaoke... I’ll say no more.

One of the best AI movies yet
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. We watched this about a year ago, and bought the disc to test out a new 4k tv. The movie is extraordinarily beautiful and the makers know enough about consciousness to imagine a real self aware mechanical intelligence. After all, we are a carbon based mechanism that has attained self awareness, so we already have something to study. Emotionally it jerks you around. It is even prophetic. Someone was testing out language learning chatbots by having them talk to each other, and they began inventing their own language. The researchers were freaked out and stopped the experiment.

Phenominal
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This movie was amazing, I wet expecting one thing and saw another and it was so much better then I anticipated. To me this movie took all the great qualities of early Si-Fi and mashed it with modern science to bring a great story to life and make it belivable. In fairness my girlfriend watched this with me and thought it was stupid, but then again she liked the butler so take her poinion for what its worth

Instant Classic
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This film is not only one of the best of 2015, but it will go down as a classic sci-fi thriller. It is highly intelligent and challenging. It presents many questions that you will be thinking about after the movie ends. Don't expect clear cut answers from the film. There is a climax and a resolution, but the film is meant to inspire discussion and thought. The special features were solid, though I was hoping for a little more. But I got it for $14 when it came out so I'm not going to complain at all. If the trailer looks even a little appealing to you, then you definitely should give this movie a watch.
