Decent flick
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I enjoyed the movie quite well. There were portions I found a little far fetched. Primarily the utter isolation of the mastermind. Overall however it is believeable which makes it a little frightening . The special effects though not over the top certainly help to emerse you into the movie. Given the somewhat fixed location of the story it never really boggs down. It does not feel like a big budget movie, more like a well budgeted Twilight Zone.

Nothing Robotic About Ex Machina!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Ex Machina is the tender story of boy meets robot --- kinda'. Can artificial intelligence think for itself? Can it possess emotions? Can it love? The special effects used to create the girl are fascinating to watch in this film and it was also interesting to watch Oscar Isaac in a role outside of his Star Wars Poe Dameron character. And the frosting on the cake was getting this 4K combo package for less than you would expect to pay for the Blu-ray alone.

One of the Best Movies of the Year
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Longtime screenwriter Alex Garland's directorial debut is a smash-a young tech employee wins a contest to visit the remote home of his company's CEO, and finds himself wrapped up in an unorthodox (and perhaps deadly) experiment involving a self-aware android named Ava. Performances by all three main actors (Domhall Gleeson, Alicia Vikander, and Oscar Isaac) are terrific and stellar production design, arresting music, and good editing help Garland produce a film that is both thought-provoking and disturbing.

I didn't know what to expect
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I guess the marketing of this movie wasn't very good because I had no idea what this was about! I do like sci-fi so the image on the poster (and now the Blu-Ray case) intrigued me enough to give this a shot. I really enjoyed it, the story moves along well, the performances are great and the effects really sell it. The 4K looks great, an improvement over the Blu-Ray in terms of pictures quality, contrast (thank you HDR), detail, and color.

Solid suspense theme
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It's got visuals and atmosphere in spades. I think the plot structure is very satisfying, carrying the viewer down a corridor of creeping suspense. It never really lets you know where you're going, but something is definitely on the way. The only down-side is the open-ended conclusion. But by application of a little common-sense logic, I think one can arrive at a fairly objective set of answers to tie-up the loose ends. Well worth it.

beautiful, intimate, and creepy
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.slow pace but terrific story and well developed characters. not all is at it seems throughout this film. the locations and cinematography are amazing, and the indoor settings create a very specific mood and ambiance. sometimes dark and somber, sometimes a little brighter with a hint of (false) hope, but overall a little bleak I thought. at least for a couple of the protagonists; for one of them the message and outcome are quite liberating. all in a thoroughly enjoyable way.

Good but not enough action
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.very interesting movie, but little "action". I don't see myself re-watching this movie very often. But it was DEFINITELY worth watching. I find that the movies I watch many times have a fair amount of action with complex soundtracks. This is not that type of movie. This is more of a psychological thriller that requires your attention on the dialog. Interesting, thought provoking, even plausible... just not high on my list of movies I'd watch a few times every year two.

Dark But Brilliant.
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Ex Machina is a mind bending movie that is really unique. If you are at all a sci-fi or drama fan you need to see it. Asks a lot of questions about the ethical nature of artificial intelligence. It gives some scary answers too. The 4k Blu ray is beautiful. Such a striking movie needs to be seen in all its glory. This UHD copy does just that. Grab it now!

Phenomenal adult sci-fi
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm not going to spoil the film or really talk about the content. If you are a sci-fi fan, have an attention span that lets you watch a story unfold, can handle deep philosophical and technical discussions, understand that adult content is part of humanity, and want to be thoroughly entertained with an original, well-made, and engaging film, I highly recommend Ex Machina. Acting is top-notch, the effects are uncanny, and the directing/editing is taut.

Better than many
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Ex Machina is an interesting forward look on artificial intelligence, and it may not be so far fetched when we keep hearing more and more about how sex robots are being perfected in countries like Japan. The main characters are well played and the plot certainly has its twists and turns.

Machine Consciousness
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Science fiction fans who liked I Robot and A I should also love this movie. A company employee won a lottery for a vacation, or so he thought, but discovers that he has to administer a test on a new prototype machine robot. Unfortunately paranoia seems to take over the mental state of Caleb. Ava, the machine robot, has her own problems that are only just beginning as she or it is dealing with self awareness. A good sci-fi movie.

Finally have a 4K version of Ex Machina that works
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this same 4K/Blu ray combo a couple of years ago, but the 4K disc would not play; after purchasing, I discovered that it was a known problem with only the 4K disc. I took a chance and bought it again on 4/17/2021, hoping the problem had been resolved. I am glad that I did. The 4K disc played just fine and looks great.

Provocative, theatric, and beautifully filmed.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Ex Machina deals philosophically and artfully with the over played topic of artificial intelligence. The movie's hypothesis asks when does a computer program become sentient? Technology is explained with a wave of the hand. With that out of the way, the movie uncoils a closed experiment stepped in theatrics, sensuality, cruelty, mistrust, imprisonment, loss, and abandonment.

One of the best sci-fi movies I've seen in awhile
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I actually watched this movie based on comments from one of my favorite news personalities. I remembered seeing it advertised for theaters, but it didn't particularly pique my interest at the time. However, after the news guy's endorsement I checked it out and absolutely loved it. It wasn't your typical robots are taking over film. It's incredibly well-written and acted and just very sleek in nature. I highly recommend this if you haven't seen it.

A very engaging movie
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Yes, it's another robot-vs-humans movie, but not a run-of-the-mill type movie. It's the dialog between the artificial intelligence of the robot (AI) and the humans involved that really make up this movie. Probably the first ever movie for me in which I didn't want to miss any of the dialog. Ending was a little weak though. Bluray run time about 108 minutes. Excellent color quality. Also includes special features: Creating Ex Machina and Behind the Scenes vignettes.

a thought provoking geek fest
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This movie provides a rich source of thought provoking material for any geek interested in AI and machine sentience. Only 4 stars since the rest of the family found it boring beyond belief and it is not something you would watch more than maybe once per year. Movie ends with you left to fill in the final outcome for yourself. I will not spoil the movie here. I would only recommend this to a fellow geek that finds 2001 a fun movie.

not the best 4K transfer

Immersion
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Love this movie for its cinematography and its sound production. This UHD disc delivers exactly what I was hoping for for my home theater. It really makes you feel like you're in the home of Nathan Bateman and experiencing all of had to offer, and with intensity because of the soundtrack.

Very good science fiction thriller!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It's a movie that is as thrilling to watch as it is engaging to discuss. The sci-fi drama takes on a new life on Ultra HD, powered by an excellent and beautiful 4K presentation that offers a nice improvement over its Blu-ray counterpart despite Rob Hardy's gloomy, atmospheric cinematography. It also features the same complex, somber DTS:X soundtrack and the same set of supplements as before.

Not bad
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The movie was a little differant but ok..kind a strange twist. Would give movie 3.5 stars but i bought this in 4k format for about $29 and the movie in no way shape or form was 4k format..a few scenes might have been but just the action ones. so i could have gotten the blu-ray for about $16 less and been fine..so don't make my mistake and get the blu-ray instead
