We enjoyed the Harry Potter movies, but I will admit I haven't read the books. I figured that since this is more "Harry Potter" type stuff from the same author, it would probably be fairly decent. Turn back the time about 70 years from the time of Harry Potter and we are introduced to many new characters and some KNOWN characters and a big opening in the door of the "Magic World". If you liked Harry Potter, you'll like this. If you read the Harry Potter Books, you'll like this.

I loved this movie at the theater. Great movie for any Harry Potter fan. I always buy the DVD/Blu Ray/Digital combo when available. My kids love the option to watch on TV or on a tablet when traveling. This was very easy to download. Beware of digital combos that still use Flixster. This one did not so it was fine, but Flixster digital copies are difficult to download since they are not supported anymore. You will need a UV account through Vudu or Movies Anywhere. They are linked now so your movies should show up on both platforms, online and the app.

I really didn't know what to expect when I was getting this film, as a stand alone film in the Harry Potter Universe, it holds its own very well. I was pleasantly surprised at how well all the characters worked together, the serious tones, the funny bits, all of it worked. Even if you have never seen the Harry Potter films, a few of the name drops wont ring bells, but you won't fill lost, and I think thats what makes this movie successful. The steelbook is gorgeous, and after seeing the film, the cover will just make you laugh at seeing that fantastic beast in action.

    Terrific Film - bad pressing

The inventiveness holds true to the Harry Potter series yet set here in the more adult world and in the United States. Terrific performances and a good pace take us on a different kind of journey. Eddie Redmayne's quirky Newt, more comfortable among his beasts than in the world of men, is marvelously balanced by Dan Fogler's earthy, grounded and amazed Jacob Kowalski. The digital work is beautiful but gets ruined in too many places by the Bluray discs transfer which has too many hangups and image degradation flaws - tested on multiple players and systems. I exchanged my first one thinking it was those given discs - but no. The film is a must - and I hope you do not end up with as bad a release as I did. I would have given this 5 stars, but had to drop to 4 because of the poor Bluray quality.

I grew up with the Harry Potter books, starting off being older, but then the same age (they did not come out every year). This movie is a little different than the original series in that "magic" is used much more as a setting than a key plot/story point. Though, obviously, the magical creatures are a major part, the story centers around a well played likable character that any "nerd" can identify with trying to do the right thing and figure out what is going on while in a foreign land. Highly recommended.

There are a few scenes that may be too scary for small children, but in general this is a surprisingly good expansion to the Harry Potter universe. They really give it the feel of the US in the late '20s, after WWI & just before the depression. I loved all the new magic creatures & Newt's attitude of compassion & care is refreshing in the realm of Wizardly arrogance. It neatly leads into the next movie, but the major themes are resolved by the end of this movie, so it doesn't feel like much of a cliff-hanger. I bought one for my husband & one for my sister.

I didn't miss Harry Potter at all and I thought I would as I'm a big HP fan. I loved these characters and how so much of what we've come to enjoy from the HP world was still present in this older days this movie takes place in. The costumes, creatures, acting, directing, producing, location, cinematography....all of it was incredible!! I enjoyed it taking place in NY and the constrasting issues that arise several times because of the differences between the wizarding laws. So many good things! Just loved it! I'm looking forward to the remaining movies.

Having read, as well as watched all of the Harry Potter films, I wasn't all that excited to see a spin off of Harry Potter. After watching Fantastic Beasts, I am pleased to say that I am glad that J.K. Rowling and co., found a way to expand the windsurfing world. The story has a few familiar characters from the previous stories, but is primarily a new story about Newt and his accidental release of some creatures. This new story is a little darker, and more grown up, but still has all the charm that any Harry Potter fan has come to enjoy. The blu- ray boasts a very impressive video and audio presentation, along with some decent supplements. Overall, this is an impressive blu-ray, as well as a great beginning to what should be another enjoyable journey into the Harry Potter universe.

Much like how the Star Wars franchise created a while separate entity in Rogue One, the Harry Potter Universe tries that recipe with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Except in my opinion, Fantastic Beasts was much more story driven and more fun to watch. Scamander is a easy wizard to root for, and taking the story back to the United States helps envision another society full of witchcraft and wizardry. There are some twists and turns that are well-suited for any of the original Harry Potter Books. So glad that this one went straight to cinema!

Not exactly a prequel to Harry Potter, but this movie (and the proposed sequels to follow) flesh out the wizarding world prior to the Potter movies with a wealth of background. This movie stands on it's own as good entertainment, and starts setting the stage for the conflict between Dumbledore and the great dark wizard of his generation. If the rest of the films in this series are as good, Ms. Rowling will have succeeded into creating two, epic, memorable story lines that will firmly establish her as one of the best popular authors of her time.

This is loosely a prequel to the Harry Potter series, thought it completely stands on it's own. The story line is engaging, the characters are sympathetic, and the special effects are top notch. This give some explanation and background to the previous series, though it doesn't make a direct effort to connect the dots. Anyone who is a fan of the Potter movies will understand the connections with just a little research. Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable movie, and you do not even have to be familiar with the Harry Potter movies to enjoy it.

    Unique and Magical

Nothing like Rowling's Harry Potter series other than minor references to magic schools and magic. Takes it from England to the US where our hero is returning a magical creature to its homeland. Has lots of comedy in some of the creatures and all are wondrous. Has the villain; the story flows well and is well acted. Good over evil prevails. Possibly unsuitable for younger impressionable children due to some darker elements. The creatures come to life superbly in graphics and are a marvel to behold in 3D. Something I will watch many times.
