This was a funny movie. We saw it at the theater and then had to buy it. Anyone who plays video games would enjoy it i think.

Great 4K picture and sound from Disney. The movie itself is a lot of fun, though maybe more blockbuster than comedy by the end. If you know what an "NPC" is, you are probably knowledgeable enough about video games to love the premise here. If not... Ryan Reynolds is a video game character, designed just to populate a world like the game Grand Theft Auto, an online world where players log on to create chaos, win game currency, and blow off steam from their lives. But for Reynolds' character, Guy, this is life, and he's tired of how predictable his daily routine is. He has a chance to change his world, though, when he takes a pair of sunglasses from a player that allows him to see his world from a player's perspective. He becomes an overnight sensation to the game's fans, while in the real world, a pair of designers who think the game was stolen from their code are working to find proof. Their paths intersect with Guy, who falls in love with one of the designers and joins forces with her to save his digital universe. Reynolds' character is less self-assured than Deadpool, but his charm helps win over audiences to this modern premise, much like Wreck-It Ralph, which also focused on a video game character who wanted more out of life. A good cast is there to support him, but most of the fun is in the video game in-jokes and comedy bits. Eventually, the film gets swallowed up in its need to be a blockbuster, and it doesn't ruin the movie, but it's easiest to enjoy when it's being funny more than when it gets serious or raises the tension to save the world. By the way, what's with the lightsaber? Since Disney owns Star Wars just like Free Guy, you would think they would know a lightsaber doesn't work like that. But a forgivable error in a movie that's otherwise a good 2-hour comedy.

Free Guy had a difficult position to take, being a video game movie in 2021. We've had several movies take on the genre such as Ready Player One (based on the novel) but with so many genres of games, it's difficult to have a movie universally accepted with all of the different tropes even within its own genre. Free Guy takes the Battle Royal genre and takes a spin on it with a story involving two young game developers that suspect a large corporation may have stolen their code. The comedy is good but largely for a teen and above audience, something the Battle Royal genre caters to anyway. Ryan Reynolds performance is great as is Taika Waititi who steal the show. So while it's not my favorite movie, it was a good time and worth watching a few times.
