Unit was the only GE white unit in stock over the holiday's when my 11 year old model broke. This unit has most of the same features. The difference is this model was half the price of my older model and I can tell the differences. The fan is extremely noisy, like can't hear people when at the stove with microwave on. The door seems flimsy. I don't expect it to last 11 years like the old one. If it was easy to take down and put a new one up I would return it.

As microwaves go, it has served well for about two years. It had a limited warranty for 1 year. Now it has suddenly given us a couple of problems. The fan will not turn off, although it indicates it is off. It burned something last week at a low heat that we regularly use on our tea with milk. I would give it a fair rating, as I expect a product such as this to be problem free for more than two years. I purchased it at Best Buy.

I purchased this as a replacement for my GE Spacemaker Model JVM1542 which took a dump on New Years Day. That one performed fine for the 4 years I had it, so I was comfortable sticking with the same brand, with similar features. Once I got it home and unboxed, I was pleased to find that all the neccessary mounting needs were the same as my last one, so no drilling was needed! But speaking from experience, if you have SOME mechanical aptitude, and some decent tools, you can install this yourself with ease, without any problem. I've read on other sites the reviews for this one that stated the fan was too noisy, but I noticed nothing of the sort. Maybe I was just used to my other one, I'm not sure. Some features that I like over my last one, when my food is done if I don't get to it right away instead of the annoying BEEP BEEP BEEP every minute, this one has a subtle single beep. The light under the unit itself lights the stove up MUCH better, which is nice because you will loose some lighting from your overhead light to the stove(at least I did). Everything else seems about the same so far.

Microwave is great. I had to turn the blower for my installation and the wire to the blower was way too short to be able to rotate the blower. There is no excuse for having instructions to tell you how to do an installation that obviously have never been followed by the company that wrote the instructions. Also, this was a replacement for another GE Spacemaker I had before. The new microwave has a fan feature that turns on and off autmatically to keep the processor cool. There was no mention of this in the operator manual at all. Wlhen it first would not turn off, I thought I had a faulty microwave. Luckily, I thought to do a search on the web before I took it down. This is inexcusable!

Worked good four 13 months, but last month the KEYPAD died. GE stated that product was out of warranty and no assistance would be offered other than pay a service fee to get checked out. After reading the other reviews and their results, I decided not to waste my money and went out purchased an other brand last night, going to install tonight. I live in Louisville, KY and we have a GE plant here and have purchased nothing but GE, but not anymore. If I had read the reviews on this micowave, I would not have purchased it in the first place. If you do purchase this after reading all the reviews, good luck!

Pretty simple. I purchased a GE Spacemaker and within 5 years it died. Magnatron failed. Service would have cost about one third the orginal price, then I would have to pay labor and parts. I opted to just buy a new GE Spacemaker. Just short of 5 years..same problem. Magnatron is covered by a 10 year warranty...if you can get GE to admit it, but still have to pay for labor and service call. This time I am going with another brand.

Our family of 5 has trouble living without a microwave, but the higher quality units are well out of our reach at this time. This inexpensive over-the-range microwave has all the features we wanted, like the rotating tray, 1 touch cooking, and child lock-out feature, at a price we could afford. It was very easy to install ourselves. We have not had any trouble with it these since we installed it 3 weeks ago. However, it doesn't sit as securely to the wall as I would like, and the door construction feels flimsy in my hand. The charcoal filter doesn't come with the unit; GE charges an extra $22+ bucks for it. All in all, I would recommend it to someone with tight finances, but it you have more money to spend, upgrade.

Our 12 year old GE spacemaker would not heat up, and I believe it would have cost about $90 to replace the magnatron, plus labor, so we decided to get a replacement. We went in-store at Best Buy and got this at a good deal, better than the online sale price. When we got home, we installed it ourselves, keeping the old bracket from the old microwave oven. The difference between the old one (1999 model) and the new one (2011) is that the new one feels flimsy and is noisy, but it has a turntable. Also, there is an extra 'special metal alloy' rack in this new model. So far, it works, so I have no complains.

Anything you see that is higher than one star is a most likely a review of the microwave they day the unit was bought. There is no question that the microwave is very nice. I love this microwave. However, this microwave did not last more than six months before it started to make loud buzzing noises, then eventually three months later it stopped heating. We bought the extended warranty, and the bill, covered in full, was over twice the cost of the microwave. The use of the microwave was to heat water for coffee in the morning, then reheat food later at night. Very little use. As the microwave is fixed and now functional, I have set a reminder on my calendar to start looking for a new one before the extended warranty is up in another year. It will not be a GE.

The unit was fairly inexpensive for an above range microwave. I was replacing a unit that was a previous similar older model from about 10 years ago. The older one actually looked a bit more sleek and the touch pad more clear and intuitive to use than the new one. I thought that since i was getting a very similar model class, that the wall frame to hang it on would be the same...it turns out that it is completely different... so i had to take out the old wall plate and drill in holes to put in a new one. If I had known that I would have to go through all that extra installation stuff, I would have just bought any brand that i liked more, not needing to stick with the similar GE model as the old one.

sleek design, good price for the money. the anouncement that the food is ready is cool and the second reminder in comes in about a minute.

Ask anyone around that has a few years on you, & they'll say that GE's a good quality brand... well, I've come to realize that "not anymore" should be added to that statement. And maybe I'm being a little too demanding, & possibly jumping to conclusions, but several reviews can't be a coincidence! The same exact thing happened to me that was posted by TOD66 on 05/26/2010 - the microwave was GREAT...until about 3 months ago, when the entire keypad died - only 15 months old when it stopped working!! The review Posted by NoMoreGEbrands4Me on 07/17/2010 explains exactly what happened when I inquired about fixing it - same thing w/ paying for service calls & parts/labor fees. I know that small appliances & electronics are meant to be replaced, but I'd expect much more than 15 months! It's unfortunate, but I know now to steer away from GE from now on...

Sounds like my problem is a lot of others as well. I can say my microwave lasted almost 4 years,but last week the keypad died. I would think that a microwave should last longer than that and also the keypad would be one of the last things to go out. Too much moisture when boiling water? Do You think the engineers would have thought of that? Im trying to limp through with just the potato, popcorn and 30 sec setting til I can replace it. I worked at GE in Louisville in the 70's and 80's. Their appliances were a great deal and good quality. But now? Not so sure. I have a GE range as well and the keypad is sticking.

The microwave developed problems 30 days after installation. It stopped responding to the keypad and began misbehaving - sometimes it would not heat, sometimes the light and fan would not turn off. Turned out that the glass plate in the door was misaligned and prevented the door from closing properly. The sensor could not “see” that the door was closed so things wouldn't work. The repairman pushed the glass into alignment and said this was the second one he’d seen with this problem. It appears that GE’s quality control is poor at the factory. This is an easy problem to detect and prevent at the factory - even I could see that the glass was protruding past the plastic frame when the repair person pointed it out. The repair was covered under the 1 year warranty period. The GE repair person arrived within the scheduled 4 hour window. However, it was an unnecessary inconvenience since I had to take off a half day of work

I had this microwave built in when I remodeled my house. It is a nice microwave that replaces your range hood for venting. It came with a 10 yr warranty. It did fine for a couple of years, but then the Magnatron went out. Apparently they expect this part to go out because it is talked about specifically in the warranty! Although this part is covered under warranty, they wanted $50 to come out to my house to replace it! I was a little put off because I didn't think that I should have to pay for a service call if the product is under warranty. At the time I didn't feel like fighting it and was thinking that $50 is okay to get this pricey microwave up and running again. But now, a couple of years later, this same part goes out AGAIN! This time they want $80 to come out to my home and replace it. After much arguing, with someone in INDIA mind you, I have decided to take my $80 and use it to buy another microwave that is not a GE! They show their appreciation to their customers by ROBBING them on service charges. I would understand if the item was not under warranty but this is how they treat their customers? I hope they go bankrupt. Not only would I not recommend buying this microwave, I'm letting you know if you buy any GE appliance, you are taking a chance that could cost you. I admit I've had some GE products that lasted. I realize now that luck was with me and I won't buy GE again.

Just stopped heating. Read it's the magnatron which costs about $140 plus labor and tax and I'm paying for what would be a new microwave. Safe to say this is a low end microwaver, you get what you pay for and GE seems to REALLY want you to have service. I called to cancel after reading the amount it would be exceeding amount of microwave, and I was put through all kinds of sales pitches to keep the appointment. Could it be GE makes more money on REPAIRS so they sell products at lower price points to generate the secondary income?? hmmm Bottom line, no more GE's for me. NOTHING should die under 2 years and the part used to be under warranty for 5 years...GE stopped that last year...I guess they were losing their shirts replacing the garbarge parts. It's a shame.

I have purchased this product twice and both quit working about 13 months after purchase that would be one month after warranty was up. the key pad is what went out . this is the biggest piece of junk , I would never recomend to buy this product.

Great looks, great functions, only last 2 years... I'm on my third one.... first two died and I'm not ready to remodel kitchen so bought another... what the definition of insanity?? So if you buy, have a backup plan in 2 years as you will need another one….

Works just fine for what I require. Obviously not for the gourmet cook. But then again, why would a gourmet cook use a microwave anyway. Great microwave for your basic heat and eat.

Replaced old micro with this unit, stop working after 2 weeks. Went to best buy with warranty to replace unit, they had none in stock even though it was sunday and the start of new sale ad and this item was featured in ad on sale. Wanted to sell more costly unit the only 1 microwave they had in stock, or come back in a week or two for this unit when it might be instock. This was a 80 mile round trip,would not ship to us. Not very happy with assistant manager who not helpful at all and told us we could go to a competitor to buy.
