Customers are saying

Customers highly value the Opal 2.0 ice maker's excellent ice quality and ease of use. Many appreciate its compact size and sleek design, while some find the noise level and the need for frequent cleaning to be drawbacks. The water tank's design also received mixed reviews, with some users finding it inconvenient to refill. Although the WiFi functionality is a plus for some, concerns about reliability were also raised by several customers.

Great machine! Family loves it! We bought another brand at first, and as soon as we put water in it, it started leaking. Decided to buy a better brand and put more money into it as my family really wanted one of these type of machines. It was a great decision.

Hi there - we appreciate your review! It’s great to learn that you are loving your new Opal Ice Maker and that it is making plenty of delicious nugget ice. Unfortunately, there is not a pause button. However, using the Opal's Connected feature, you can schedule when the Opal comes On and goes Off using the iOS or Android GE Profile Opal app. When the schedule is enabled, Opal will check to see if it should be On or Off once every hour, at the top of the hour. We hope this helps and please feel free to reach out anytime if you have any questions, as we’re happy to help. Have a wonderful day! Lauren@GEA GE_Appliances

Got it for a mothers day present. Has made awful noises since we've had it and recently started making an extremely loud buzzing noise. Now when you put water in the tray it just leaks through the cracks and bolt holes of the machine. Was nice when it did work, but if you're buying be sure to buy the insurance on it. Glad I did since I'll be returning it less than a month after purchasing it.

The Ultimate Drink Ice, at Home

The ultimate home bar (or kitchen for that matter) is not complete without the best ice and I myself, am absolutely an ice snob. My favorite ice for on the rocks, is a copper press ice ball. However, this method is not practical for everyday use, or for a simple soda or mixed drink. Now, when I think about restaurant ice, my favorite is absolutely the ice you get a sonic. The small chips, that provide a fantastic sipping experience. And when I think ice at home, I think about those half crescent, freezer made ice that ends up clumping together in the freezer holder, blocking further ice production, and one day you just don’t have immediate ice. The (fabulous) solution – The Opal 2.0. The ice produced by the Opal 2.0 is the “nugget” ice. Having this ice at home, is an absolute luxury. The surface area ratio is ideal for drink cooling, and the presentation is superb. Having the right ice, can impress guests or just help make for a happier drink experience. I know I sound silly, but if you care about ice… this is it. AND for those ice crunchers out there, the nugget ice is an ideal size for a simple crunch or two! Ice production is simple. There is a water fill-line. Fill the water to the line, power, and ice begins making. Within 20 minutes of starting up the ice maker, there was a decent pile of ice forming (however, this was not the true nugget ice more like ice shaving attempts at the maker starting up). Within an hour, the original shavings had melted away and nugget ice was flowing. Within either 3-4 hours (not entirely sure, stopped counting) and one drink with nugget ice later. The bucket area had filled up. Corresponding time wise to the advertised 24lb in 24hrs -- producing approximately 1lb of nugget ice an hour. The ice container is smaller than I imaged; however, after scooping a cup of ice, the 3lb sized container is not limiting (a matching scoop is included). The largest caveat once you get using the ice is that water needs to be added. To add water, the ice container is to be removed and water added to the designated fill line (there are two fill lines, one for when empty and the other for when ice is present). I do not find where water refilling is tedious during normal use. If having a few people over for drinks, I’m sure it would be more frequent. Overall, I have found no inconvenience in the refilling process. There is a cleaning protocol (suggested before initial use and once a week). This protocol is slightly tedious, but well worth keeping a clean product. It calls for 5 cups water 1 tbps bleach. I first thought of this as quite aggressive, but the bleach is well diluted and helps to keep the machine clean. There is a specific cleaning cycle that may be activated and once complete, the ice maker is drained. Then, using just water, anywhere from 3 to however many further cleaning cycles occur. This adequately flushes out any residue, ensuring a well cleaned and rinsed maker. A quick note, is that the Opal 2.0 is equipped with WiFi capabilities. I actually have not utilized this feature yet being out of storage on my phone for new apps (or a software update – whoops). Supposedly you can control the icemaker and check status from the application; hopefully I’ll get my act together in the future to utilize this. Even though, absolutely not necessary. Also, if you are someone who the thought of refilling water is detrimental. There is another model of the Opal 2.0 with a water tank, reducing the frequency of water refills. This particular model, comes with the tubing necessary to add the water tank; however, it does not come with one and I did not see on the GE or BestBuy website where a specific water tank for the Opal 2.0 can be purchased separately at this time. There is a water tank available for the first version of the Opal, maybe that is the same tank, but just be aware that there are two versions of this icemaker (along with two color options). One with a tank and one without – and this is the one without. I will admit, a lower profile is achieved without a tank that would not be achievable with. All in all, this is an elegance item. If creating an at home bar experience, wanting to pamper oneself, or enabling countertop ice the Opal 2.0 will facilitate the ice dream drinks are made of. Once again, I know it is comical to go on and on about ice, but when you have a wife who doesn’t do drinks without having ice (or just love a nice piece of nugget ice) – this is the one.
