It'll require a decent amount of maintenance as do all ice machines. Keep it clean and it'll keep your drinks cold for a long time.

The issue is that I didn't have one last more than a month. Both units had screaming noise when entering defrost mode. Further, they went into defrost mode very frequently which hindered ice production significantly. Had to return both in 30 days.

Great while it lasted

Pump and compressor went bad. GE will not service, you have to use Opal’s own service department, which is nearly nonexistent.

I have mine set to make ice in the morning and again right after I get off work. That way it doesn’t run all the time.

During our last pregnancy, she had cravings for ice. After the baby came, those cravings didn't stop. When I seen this GE Ice Maker, it was a perfect solution to keep me from having to run to Sonic to get the "good crushed ice." Highly recommend.

The first one quit working after 6 months and because I had the service agreement, no questions asked - just gave me a brand new one.

Started making a loud noise three months in and after two months of that noise it progressed to keeping the house up at night loud. Apparently a common problem, so we returned it.

We appreciate you sharing your thoughts on your ice maker. Our apologies to hear it is making a bad squealing sound and understand your annoyance. The Opal Ice Maker is a complex device that combines electrical and mechanical components such as a compressor, pump, motors and fans to deliver perfect nugget ice. These components power on at different times during the ice making cycle. There will be some noise associated with the running of these components. These normal noises typically cease after 10 to 45 minutes within the ice making cycle. Hard surfaces like the floor, walls and countertops can amplify these sounds.
The following describes the sounds or noises that are normal and what may be creating them.
WHIR - When Opal is first turned on, you may notice the condenser fan spinning.
BUZZ - When the water pump first turns on, it may be dry and slightly noisy. Once it is filled with water the noise reduces significantly.
RATTLE - A rattling noise may be produced from the flow of the refrigerant. This noise should reduce significantly once the refrigerant system has stabilized.
GURGLE - When the refrigerant system shuts off, there may be a brief gurgle as the refrigerant stops flowing.
HUM - The compressor is a motor. It produces a low tone humming sound while it is running.
CHUGGING - When the unit first starts up, the gear motor can make a chugging noise. This noise should be considerably reduced after 15 to 20 minutes, once the Opal starts making ice.
CLICK - As nugget ice is produced it drops into the ice drawer. The first nuggets produced make the loudest sound as they fall directly onto the bottom of the ice bin. As the bin fills, this noise reduces significantly.
SQUEAK - When Opal is in need of defrosting, it may start to squeak as ice starts to build up around the mechanisms. The defrost cycle is automatic and may take 10 to 45 minutes.
PUMPING WATER - At the start of ice making, Opal will flush the system with water for approximately 5 minutes. You may see or hear water running during this process. This is normal. If your Opal seems loud during this process, it may need more water.
A sound or noise that is not normal:
If the Ice Maker is making a continuous grinding noise, this is not normal. If it is doing this, please contact Opal Support by calling 866-907-6718, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, EST. Wishing you the best. Mike@GEA
Best investment if you use a lot of ice

We have had it for 2 months now and I love it! I have found that it performs best and doesn’t squeak when you keep the main water tank full especially if it’s going to be making a lot of ice.

When it works, it’s great! We love the nugget ice. But it only works for a few weeks, and then it stops. Best Buy has been great to replace with a new one, but we are now on our third and final one. We can’t keep doing this. So frustrating!

It is a little noisy like people say it it sounds like the dishwasher it doesn’t bother me because I can have all the pellet ice I want.
