This is our second GE Profile Opal - our previous one was the first generation. It is great to have a steady supply of nugget ice right in our kitchen. While the holding bin is a bit small, the production of ice is quick enough that we rarely find that we are waiting for more (even when we have guests over). It definitely requires a bit of attention, though, in that you need to clean it (easy but takes 20 minutes or so) regularly to keep the ice fresh. We have not noticed any increase in our electric bill as a result of having the Opal - we have it programmed to turn off at night and to resume ice production in the morning. Overall, we are very happy with this purchase.

Worked great and made amazing ice for 10 months. We regularly cleaned it and only used filtered water. About 11 months in, it began taking longer to make ice. Now, at 11.5 months, it is making the most horrendous, grinding and squealing noises. The only way to stop it is to unplug it for a few seconds. It then stops, but it starts making them again in a couple of hours. Bad unit, or VERY expensive junk?? Whichever it is, it needs to be fixed, because $500 is too expensive for this thing not to last several years (especially when we clean it often and only use filtered water!!)

We know these issues with your Opal must be concerning, and we want to assist. For an issue with ice production, you may want to check the chute to ensure it isn’t blocked. You can try cleaning the condenser by blowing compressed air into the fan opening as well. You should also make sure there’s at least a 3” gap around the entire unit and nothing is covering the vent on the side. Regarding the noise, we do have a description of normal sounds the unit may make on page 13 of the manual (which can be viewed on our GE Appliances website when you look up the model number and go to the product page). A grinding noise may not be ordinary. You might want to try resetting the unit by unplugging it for 3 to 4 hours; this can often resolve an issue. If you need to reach out to our Opal Support team, they can be reached at 866-907-6718. Our specialists would be glad to assist further with these concerns. GE_Appliances

    GEM!

We can’t live without the little gems of ice this beauty dispenses! Three pieces of hopefully helpful advice for buyers. When starting to make ice leave the container open about 2” for the first few minutes while it fills up the water reservoir, this avoids getting water in the bin. Discard the first couple of batches as the ice is not really firm and set. If you have the side water tank don’t wait until the ice maker indicates it’s empty to refill it, this avoids starting the ice making process from the get go all over again. I usually refill it when there is about an inch of water still visible.

Been going strong for months now. Works fast, works great. I wish the ice cubes were larger though, but it is what it is. They are like M&M size (not peanut), so if you’re expecting large cubes, you’ll be disappointed. Otherwise it is easy to setup, easy to use. WiFi works great. I hear there is a trick to hook it up to running water, but that takes some craftiness not something the manufacturer suggests or recommends.

I had just bought this ice maker and I love it so far! I love the kind of us that it makes! Iv'e owned different counter top ice makers in the past and nothing compares to this one. I would definitely buy this again. After reading all of the reviews i decided to take my chances. Like I said I only had it for a couple weeks now and its been running great. At times you can hear it a little but nothing to where it bothers me. I went ahead and bought the warranty just in case. A lot of reviews said to just get it so i did. Hope I never have to use it!

GE Profile - Opal 2.0 24-lb. Portable Ice maker

We have been using the GE Profile - Opal 2.0 24-lb. Portable Ice maker with Nugget Ice Production, Side Tank and Built-in WiFi, for about 2 months now. This is working great at keeping up with the ice usage of 2 adults and 2 kids (12 & 10). After letting this fill up on ice the first day we are now able to have ice when ever we want. Every so often it makes a low squeaking sound, but goes away fairly quickly. The side water tank is a definite need to keep up with our ice needs. The soft crunchy ice is exactly what we were looking for. One of our kids has braces and likes to chew ice, so this helps to prevent damage to the braces. Very happy with this purchase.

I love the Opal, now the GE profile. I was an early investor and have been loyal to them. The ice is fantastic. With that said, NEVER buy this machine without the extended warranty! The 2.0 is a huge upgrade, but there is still a MASSIVE chance that the machine will stop making ice regularly, starting making LOUD noises during operation, or that the electronics system will fritz. I've exchanged numerous machines over the years- There are just too many systems on this device that can and WILL fail. It's awesome, but protect yourself.

I love this ice machine and the water tank on the side makes it so easy not to worry about filling it up so that the machine can make more ice. every time you open the ice drawer and close it the machine starts to do its thing making more ice. the only upsetting thing about this machine is that you get water drops every time the ice drawer is open. It also take a lot of counter space and its bulky. I had to order this item 3 times because I kept receiving a use machine.

So far so good, ice production is plentiful and you get the “good ice”. Setup was very straightforward but did take a little time with the cleaning to flush the system. I like that you can easily set up schedules in the app. Only complaints the gasket on the side tank falls out easily so be careful when you are taking apart to wash it. When we first started using the unit was making a squeaky sound as the ice was dispensing. It was a little concerning but stoped on its own. Since then it has been very quiet. The other complaint is when you pull open the ice bin water will drip off the bottom, the drip tray catches it but it’s good to have a towel near by

    Good Ice Maker

We were tired of the small ice maker in our fridge constantly running out of ice so we bought the GE Opal 2.0 ice maker. After a few weeks of daily use, we’re happy with our purchase. Quickly makes ice and it’s not as loud as others mentioned. The app needs work. Connected to the ice maker, set up a schedule, and then it wouldn’t connect the next time I tried. Guess I need to go back to the instructions to reconnect. Not a big issue. Definitely recommend this ice maker.

Compared to other icemakers I have had, this one is by far the most quiet. The Wi-Fi features are kind of a gimmick and the app you have to use is barely functioning at best. Another feature that this icemaker has is when you open the drawer, the machine stops making ice until you close the door. This might not seem like a big deal, but it is. These nugget makers continuously produce ice until it reaches the full bin cut off point. Other machines make ice even when the door is open, which means ice just falls down into your water reservoir. As far as the side tank is concerned, it is nice to be able to see how much water is left, but don't make the mistake I did and fill your reservoir and then fill your side tank. If you do, you will have to clean up some water. When you fill the reservoir first, it flows over into the base of the side tank holder. It will create a situation where when you put the tank down into base the water already in there will be pushed up and out causing a mess. This only has happened on the first fill up ever. I suppose you could pinch off the hose when doing it, but that seems like a hassle. This is a great machine with only a single minor design flaw. The side tank. It should be able to be filled from the top. I knew it was like it is when I purchased it, so it is nothing against the machine, but more of an idea to make it better. Last thing, the top surface seems to scratch/mar very easily. I have only sat mugs/cups on the top of my machine or the gallon water jugs while filling it. It shows many minor imperfections now. This is after only about a week of ownership.

Simply Wow! This smart refreshing gadget was purchased for my wife but husband has also become a fan of this producer of small oval shaped nuggets of goodness. I waited to purchase because I couldn’t get a clean pic of ice shape and size. The ice this heavenly machine produce are small bite sized morsels of frozen deliciousness. Be sure to purchase the model with the reserve tank or you will be filling the machine too often. The reserve tank holds about 6 to 7 16.9 ounce bottles of water. Super easy to install, machine can remain on 24/7 if you like. Has a light and Wi-Fi. This guy has become a family favorite.

Bought this for my husband who thinks it is awesome. Expensive, but worth it if you want continuous chewy ice without a water hookup. We don’t even use the additional side reservoir and always have plenty of ready, fresh ice. Simple to use and maintain. I don’t think it is made clear that you leave it turned on. It will power itself on when either you remove some of the ice, enough melts and recycles back down to the reservoir, or you add water. Ours powers on to make additional ice maybe three times each day (morning after we fill water bottles for work, afternoon with recycled water, and evening when we get some for drinks at dinner). It’s too easy and convenient.
