Better than 1st model. Make sure you clean it!!

Much better than thfe earlier version. I got the black and black stainless on sale for the same price as regular stainless. So glad I did. Much better look and easier to keep clean. My only complaint is that the water tank is a littte smaller so I'm generally filling up the tank twice a day and that's with only me using it. Make sure you clean it AT LEAST every 2 Weeks or you will soon have mold everywhere. Once you have it you can never get rid of it.

We sprung for this ice maker over the alternatives and we’ll never look back. This is an ice maker that will make you wonder why you ever used any other ice in the past. If you’re on the fence still and reading this just buy it, you wont be disappointed. Fresh pellet ice is always available for you, and this thing is a showstopper when we have company over. Buy it, do it!

Only had for a couple of months but so far it’s been great. Turns itself on with mobile app schedule, so we have ice when we get home. Only gave 4 stars because of the short time I’ve had it. Also, cleaning takes a little effort.

The wife wanted me to buy a built in ice maker. After installation it was well over $3K. I purchased this to avoid appease her. She was prepared to hate it, mainly because she wanted the built in like one of her friends. Guess what - she admitted to loving this a few days after I set it up. The ice is perfect and the price for the "good ice" is a fraction of what I was going to have to spend. Best purchase of 2020. (sad commentary I know - but this thing is still really good).

Have had this ice machine for going on 2 years and from the first month in it’s given me problems. I’ve cleaned and gone the manual countless times and usually once a week it stops working for weeks at a time. Our water is filtered and I use ice machine cleaner. I have called tech support and many times and the answer comes up the same. “It should be working now”. Well, I’m beyond frustrated now. 3/10 would not recommend. The good ice is NOT worth the trouble. Go to Sonic for the good ice lol.

We are very sorry to hear you've had this experience with your icemaker. This is not what we expect to hear and apologize for your inconvenience. Here are some troubleshooting tips: If the water well is filled to the upper fill line and no ice is being produced, please perform this simple test: 1. Please start the Opal and switch to cleaning mode. Don't forget to detach the side tank. 2. Remove the screen/filter at the bottom corner of the reservoir, exposing the small white rubber inlet used for water circulation. 3. Make certain that the Opal is not connected to the phone app and that the water well is filled to the upper fill line with distilled water. 4. Remove the ice bin and press the button to see if the Opal pumps water. This could take up to 5 minutes to start. 5. Plug the small inlet with your finger for 10-15 seconds to create a vacuum within the pump/circulation system. 6. Release the plug and wait a minute or until you see water movement. 7. If you do not see a change, you may want to repeat these steps a couple of times. Note: If you see water movement, please switch to ice mode and run for 30 minutes. You may also need to prime your pump so try using a Turkey Baster/Injector and gently fill the hose that doesn't go to the side tank with water, and then restart the machine. If you continue to have issues, please reach out to OnPoint directly by calling 1-866-907-6718, M-F 8-8 EST GE_Appliances

A little over a month in and we still love it. Love how easy it is to clean versus the small cheaper ones. It’s nice and quiet on our countertop and looks good. We keep the nightlight on.

family loves it. Gets used 100 times a day. Doesn't leak, unless you don't connect hoses well. If ice melts it gets recycled into the machine and becomes ice again. Only complaint would be if I could hook it to my refrigerator line so I don't have fill up the reservoir so often.

    Too many problems

My sister-in-law gifted us one of these machines about a year and a half ago. I’m not sure where she purchased it from, so this review is no reflection on Best Buy. I’m just hoping to let as many people know as I can, so they don’t spend and extreme amount of money on a crummy product. The ice this machine makes is absolutely fantastic, but there are so many problems. First of all, we started off by using water from our Burkey water filter. I assumed that would be sufficient, but it quickly became apparent that it was not. The water started getting black stuff in it. I had a friend with an opal, and she said she only uses distilled water - so I’ve started using that, and it’s helped, but not gotten rid of it completely. Secondly, the cleaning is a huge pain. It says to clean weekly, but it’s such a process, that I’m never able to get to that quickly. It says to run the water with cleaning solution through a few times, but I swear it takes like 10 times for it to work. Of course, this might be better resolved with more frequent cleaning, but what a pain! Thirdly, the machine produces so much heat! I’ve vacuumed out the fan several times, but it still produces so much heat - which in turn causes the ice to melt. Lastly, and definitely worst of all, my ice maker has developed a bulge behknd where the tray goes. Like the plastic has warped from the heat of the motor. It seems like a major malfunction which should be resolved by the company, but of course the warranty is only good for a year. The bulge causes the tray to pop out slightly which then causes the machine to stop producing ice. For a machine that costs so much, you’d think there’d be better customer care and warranties. This thing is a piece of crap - but it produces fantastic ice - when it works!

    Great EXPENSIVE ice maker

Makes great ice in perfect size nuggets. Makes ice fast. The only minus is that it has to be cleaned every three weeks with a time consuming process, and high cost.

    Daunting maintenance

    Posted .

I'm not going to lie. I love this machine but I echo all the one star reviews. Yes, it does make a noise and it gets worse over time but I could live with that. However, the maintenance is absolutely daunting. I follow the instructions, descale every 2 weeks, use bottled water only. But, the mold is just aweful---in the tubing and in the holding chamber. I have to remove the backing just to get to the chamber every 2 weeks. There's scales in the tubing and there's no way to get to it, not even vinegar descale every 2 weeks. If there's an easier way to replace the tubing myself, I would gladly do it. Started having problems about 1 year in. Now, 16 months in, its' days are numbered. GE, if you're reading this, there's got to be a better way to clean this.

If black residue is seen inside the Opal Ice Maker (including hoses and tanks), it can be caused by mineral build-up in the machine. Even with filtered water, minerals come through that will build up over time. We recommend the following to help maintain your Opal Ice Maker and remove mineral residue; increase the frequency of the cleaning cycles performed, run the cleaning cycle weekly with a bleach solution, and run a cleaning cycle monthly with vinegar to remove mineral deposits and to limit build-ups over time. -- If these tips don’t help, please reach out to us via private message on Facebook or Instagram so that we may learn more about your situation. I love everything about it, but the noise it makes sometimes... just horrible. Nearly every review mentions the noise - believe it. Here is a sample from 6 feet away. Keep in mind you get this about twice a day for 10 minutes or so each time. https://youtu.be/Ffnw9esi-Eg

We have owned two of these so far... the first one started making loud noises and then started leaking. Got another one and it also started leaking. In addition, these things are a pain to clean, and nearly impossible to keep clean. Mold grows throughout the tubes of this thing.

We are sorry that you are having issues with your Opal leaking. During normal operation, condensation forms on the bottom surface of the ice bin. This water will sometimes collect and drip down the lower front surfaces of the ice maker that may look like a leak. The included drip tray can be installed in front of the Opal to collect this water. If this isn't what you are experiencing and your Opal Ice Maker is not working properly you can contact Opal Ice Maker Support, or call 1-866-907-6718, M-F 8-8 EST, for further assistance.
