Love the ice it makes but the sounds it would start making when needing to be cleaned out were loud!! Overall decent ice machine.

Thank you for your feedback. We are so glad you are loving your Ice Maker. The Opal Ice Maker is a complex device that combines electrical and mechanical components such as a compressor, pump, motors and fans to deliver perfect nugget ice. These components power on at different times during the ice making cycle. There will be some noise associated with the running of these components. These normal noises typically cease after 10 to 45 minutes within the ice making cycle. Hard surfaces like the floor, walls and countertops can amplify these sounds. We have some great information on our GE Appliances site that explains the cleaning process. It is titled: Opal Ice Maker- Cleaning and Care of Side Tank. GE_Appliances

Finally - An Ice Maker That Can Keep Up

I love ice. It doesn't matter what beverage, I want enough ice to keep my drink cold and I don't want to run out of ice before my drink is empty. There have been times when we've had guests over and our refrigerator ice maker can't keep up. Which means we'd have to plan ahead and make a container of ice. It works, but it's less than ideal. The GE Profile Opal makes a lot of ice. Not only does it make a lot of ice, it makes little ice pellets that you'll find in restaurants. Ice cubes that can fit in water bottles. Ice cubes that you can chew if that's your thing. To give an idea of how quickly this makes ice, I wasn't timing but I think I had enough ice for a 12oz can of LaCroix in about 30 minutes. My refrigerator would have taken hours. Because the cubes are smaller, they freeze faster and it just keeps churning them out. GE claims the side tank allows you to get 3 times more ice than using the internal tank. It was more than enough to fill the entire ice reservoir. The tank has a nice plunger mechanism that keep you from spilling water all over when you load it onto the ice maker. Because the ice reservoir isn't cooled, as the cubes melt they drip back down into the water tank to get frozen again. If they were frozen, they'd stick together giving you a big clump of ice. I learned this the hard way by empying the ice into an ice bucket. Whoops. I will say, the Opal is really big. You've gotta have a lot of counter space or some place where it won't get in the way. This is a great option for people who have refrigerators without ice makers or a bar/man cave where extra ice is always nice to have on-hand.

I have used this icemaker for several weeks with no issues. It makes the sonic type ice. The side tank makes refilling less often. only negative is that it is difficult to clean.

    Too many problems

My sister-in-law gifted us one of these machines about a year and a half ago. I’m not sure where she purchased it from, so this review is no reflection on Best Buy. I’m just hoping to let as many people know as I can, so they don’t spend and extreme amount of money on a crummy product. The ice this machine makes is absolutely fantastic, but there are so many problems. First of all, we started off by using water from our Burkey water filter. I assumed that would be sufficient, but it quickly became apparent that it was not. The water started getting black stuff in it. I had a friend with an opal, and she said she only uses distilled water - so I’ve started using that, and it’s helped, but not gotten rid of it completely. Secondly, the cleaning is a huge pain. It says to clean weekly, but it’s such a process, that I’m never able to get to that quickly. It says to run the water with cleaning solution through a few times, but I swear it takes like 10 times for it to work. Of course, this might be better resolved with more frequent cleaning, but what a pain! Thirdly, the machine produces so much heat! I’ve vacuumed out the fan several times, but it still produces so much heat - which in turn causes the ice to melt. Lastly, and definitely worst of all, my ice maker has developed a bulge behknd where the tray goes. Like the plastic has warped from the heat of the motor. It seems like a major malfunction which should be resolved by the company, but of course the warranty is only good for a year. The bulge causes the tray to pop out slightly which then causes the machine to stop producing ice. For a machine that costs so much, you’d think there’d be better customer care and warranties. This thing is a piece of crap - but it produces fantastic ice - when it works!

My son purchased this machine at the end of September, 2020, with the 4 year extended warranty for me. After one week, it started squealing like crazy when it made ice. Over the course of a few weeks, the sound got louder and louder. Around the 10th of November, 2020, the squealing, roaring and a lot of other sounds I cannot even describe was horrible and it quit making ice altogether. I contacted GE Opal Ice maker department, yes, they have a special hotline for this product. Needless to say, they have yet to contact me back, (today is Nov. 24th). Since at this point, I don't have a ice maker, I opted to take the one I had back to Best Buy and swap it for another one. This machine was not even 2 months old. Best Buy used my 4 year warranty because they will only take back a defective product 15 days after purchase unless purchased around the holidays and then it is a little longer. Apparently the warranty is only good for one use. Also they don't take off time or pro-rate the time, it is one time use only and then is cancelled. So, when you get the replacement product, guess what? You have to buy another warranty. Well....I ended up have to order another ice maker because no store in a 2-3 hour radius had the machine. I got my machine Nov. 17th. Guess what? It has started the same squealing. It only does it when it makes ice, which makes me think it is a problem with the pump, go figure. But from the symptoms of the first one, it is headed down the same road. The machine itself is easy to use and clean, a little time consuming, but overall easy. EVERYONE loves the ice. Design is great, (other than whatever is causing these units to break within a couple of months of use), it is big though, it will take a lot of room on countertop. I only gave one star because the ice machine is doing same thing after one week of use and Best Buy AND GE's inability of customer service. GE never calling back and Best Buy is to make you buy another extended warranty. I am more unhappy with the lack of customer service than anything. I want the machine, I want it to work. Just like everything else, you have good and bad reviews, but getting two and they have the same problem. Sounds like someone at GE needs to figure it out and fix it and stop selling them until they do. But it's all about the money I guess. I tried to post a video of what it was doing, but it wouldn't let me. Hope this helps someone.

    Perfect Ice

While this is an expensive item, it is 100% worth every penny. It’s super easy to set up, it’s quiet, and the ice is absolute perfection. I did see a lot of people complaining about it not working suddenly with the “add water” light illuminated regardless of water being present. This worried me, but we decided to try it anyways. Sure enough this did happen to us, but we figured out that the intake tube had an air bubble in it. Once we were able to get that cleared out it started working again with no issue.

Working great, I'm only using distilled water from the store. Hopefully it prolongs the life. Great with snow cone syrups if you like munching on ice. It's easy on the teeth too.

Hello- Thank you for your review and we are happy to hear that you are enjoying your new opal icemaker unit. It is good to use a filtered/ distilled water on the unit. If you would like for purchase, this unit does also allow for a water filter. This is the 2nd Opal Ice Machine I've owned. The first one lasted 18 months before it began screaming periodically. Since I did purchase insurance initially, I took advantage of the ability to get another one. We love the ice and it does produce rather quickly even when you have a house full of people.

Everyone loves the ice our GE makes. Wish it was larger but it makes ice cery quickly so there are usually no issues with it as long as the water tank stayes filled. Cleaning regularly is key so stay on top of that but over all it has looks function and makes great ice.

This is a must have for any home. Yes, the price is higher, but so worth it!! We have a Samsung refrigerator which we all know the issues with the ice maker. Our GE Profile Opal 2.0 38lb. - Portable Ice maker with Nugget Ice Production, Side Tank and built in Wi-fi Stainless Steel allows us to have plenty of ice and enough when we have guest over. I don’t know how I lived without this for so long.

A family of ice connoisseurs, we only have positive remarks on this ice maker. The apparatus keeps up with a family of five without any issues. We primarily utilize the ice for personal drinks and love the option to add filtered water to the machine. Readily available to scoop and does not freeze in chunks. Perfection!

We sprung for this ice maker over the alternatives and we’ll never look back. This is an ice maker that will make you wonder why you ever used any other ice in the past. If you’re on the fence still and reading this just buy it, you wont be disappointed. Fresh pellet ice is always available for you, and this thing is a showstopper when we have company over.
