Customers are saying

Customers appreciate the Opal 2.0's excellent ice quality and overall performance, frequently praising its ease of use and attractive design. However, some users find the machine noisy and require regular maintenance, including filter replacements and descaling. The water tank capacity and the need for frequent sanitization are also points of concern for some customers. While the compact size is a plus for many, others find the weight to be a significant drawback.

Do Not Buy!!! You’ve been warned!!

Do not buy. I cannot explain poor the design is on there. I have returned 4 total GE Opal machines over the past 2 years. I am now in my 2nd GE Opal 2 Ultra. I write this as my ice machine is having a stroke, unable to produce ice because it’s frozen over. I am so done with this thing. The design is poor at best.

We are sorry to hear you've had these issues with your Opal icemakers. It sounds like your current Opal may need to be descaled. fill the reservoir with undiluted white vinegar, press and hold the clean button for three seconds, and run the cleaning cycle up to three times. For best results, place a vinegar-soaked cloth in the ice chute and let it soak for 18 hours to dissolve hard water deposits. After soaking, drain the solution, and run three separate rinse cycles with fresh water before discarding the first batch of ice. The Opal only requires the use of potable (safe to drink) water. Some owners may choose to use only distilled water in their Opal. If using only distilled water, you will most likely not need to remove mineral deposits. It is our hope this helps resolve the issue. Thank you! Joyce@GEAppliances GE_Appliances

Worst item I’ve ever purchased from Best Buy or GE! I bought this in November and am on my second one, which just broke - like the first one! Says add water, constantly, even though I clean it regularly and do everything I should. This machine is terrible

I bring it back i get the new ultra model get charged an additional 107$ and this one as well on day 5 of having is no longer making ice its just pouring water out of the spout into the basin. Not producing any ice. Going back to get my money back and swap brands GE profile is a joke

We are glad to assist with your Opal making a cranking sound. We recommend unplugging the unit and fully defrost it to make sure there is no ice buildup. You will than need to clean the auger and ice bin to clear any possible blockages. Also make sure the unit is on a level surface. Refer to the link below for guidance:

This thing is a piece of junk. Makes ice for a while, then starts making whining and grinding noises. It sounds like it’s screaming. Have to unplug it to get it to finally wind down and stop.

We regret to hear this and encourage you to follow the steps for cleaning and descaling the unit if you have not already done so. Please also ensure you have 4" of air clearance on the sides and back wall of the ice maker for proper air circulation. We also recommend cleaning the vent openings on the sides or back with the attachments on your vacuum cleaner or with a hand vacuum. If the issues persist, please call 1-866-907-6718 for further assistance. GE_Appliances

Not worth it, especially for the high price tag. It didnt even last 3 weeks before it started a really awful, obnoxious noise. I also had the Frigidaire prior, it did the same. All the countertop ice makers are junk.

We are sorry to hear you were unhappy with your Ice Maker. The Opal Ice Maker is a complex device that combines electrical and mechanical components such as a compressor, pump, motors and fans to deliver perfect nugget ice. These components power on at different times during the ice making cycle. There will be some noise associated with the running of these components. These normal noises typically cease after 10 to 45 minutes within the ice making cycle. Hard surfaces like the floor, walls and countertops can amplify these sounds. Note: If the Ice Maker is making a continuous grinding noise, this is not normal. You can reach out to Opal Service by calling 1-866-907-6718, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, EST. We want to help you with your Opal sounds and ice production. We recommend making sure your unit is producing normal sounds by checking the information in the article titled "Opal Ice Maker - Normal Sounds" on the GE Appliances website.

Regarding your Opal not producing ice, we recommend checking that the ice bin is pushed all the way in place. and try to reset the Ice Maker by unplugging the unit for 3 to 4 hours. For more tips you can visit the article titled "Opal Ice Maker - Not Making Ice" on the GE Appliances website as well.
