After 2 weeks of owning this product it no longer works. I first started experience loud sqweeling from the machine which according to the owners manual is normal sounding to run a defrost cycle. Well that loud sqweeling then turned my ice maker into a jack hammer and no longer able to make ice. After running a descaling cleaner and a clean cycle the ice maker then kept telling me to add water. I followed some youtube videos to prime the pump with no luck and dug deeper to find the water float is defective. I would do more research if you are thinking about buying this product.

After numerous calls to the manufacturer & no end in site decided the $600 ice maker was probably going to be a problem I wanted to wash my hands of. I attempted to return it to Best Buy & I had no idea Best Buy had a 15 day policy I never would have purchased it with them had I joked it had a ridiculous policy. They told me to spend an additional $60 for the protection plan on it to bring it in & exchange it for another. Meanwhile in the 20 days I had made the purchase it’s an additional $150 cheaper from the day I bought it. Poor experience all around. The product worked fine for 2 weeks.

Bringing New Meaning to "Squeal Like a Pig"

We use distilled water and descale it weekly nonetheless and still get the squealing. Let me tell you, it is LOUD. In a 5000 sq ft house, you can hear the squealing everywhere. Quite distinctly. For people who work remotely like we do, it is a problem when you are on a call and the icemaker starts squealing. When it is not shrieking, it is wonderful. Really too bad.

We have information about what sounds you may hear from your Opal in an article on our GE Appliances website titled "Opal Ice Maker - Normal Sounds"; you can view that when you look up the title on our website and click the 'Support' tab. We recommend disconnecting the Opal from power for three to four hours before reconnecting, to reset it; this can often solve an issue. If you continue to have this issue and think the sound isn't normal, please send us a private message via Facebook, Instagram, or X with your contact information, the complete model/serial numbers, a video of the sound you're hearing and a copy of this review. We'll look into your situation as soon as possible.

This item is very heavy and difficult to move close to a sink for cleaning. It is also noisy and generates a lot of heat. Do yourself a favor and purchsae a good cooler like an RTIC Ultra light 52 or a YETI Rambler 45. Go to Sonic once a week and buy 3-4 bags of ice. Less hassle, less cleanup and you don't have to worry about it breaking down. A cooler doesn't break down and can be used for other things like camping, sports events, family gatherings or for fishing (surf or by boat).1
