Based on research this ice maker makes that noise when the ice gets jammed up in the despenser. This would be the second one that I'm going to take back, due I can't take the whining noise and having to shut it off so the ice can defrost and turning it back on.

Great Nugget Ice Maker

However, with this model it seemed like they addressed the issues with overheating causing the unit not to make ice. On this model there are two radiators and a fan on the back along with an removable air filter. These additions so far seem to keep the unit a lot cooler. Hopefully, we can get more than two years out of it. We love it so far. Gets ice in about 15 mins and full in about 4 hours 2-3 hours.

We finally made the decision to get our own. We are loving it! Sure, some of the maintenance might be a bit much, but saving us from having to drive in to town makes it all worth it!

After a few hiccups with my second purchase of this product all has been great. The only thing that I am not crazy about is that the hose that goes from the unit to the side tank is a dark color now. I clean it every 4 to 6 weeks since I use filtered water and I used to watch that hose to make sure there were not any particles floating around. If I saw anything I would clean it early. Now you can’t see anything since the hose is dark. Other than that I love this product. The best thing GE makes in my opinion.

If it wasn’t for Best Buy’s protection plan, I’d buy something else. The last two squealed terribly bad. And now this one needs to be sanitized every five days; which seems ridiculous. I spend more time sanitizing the ice make than i do using it. I think it’s time for me to move on from this very expensive ice maker and find something of higher quality. Very disappointed in the product, extremely satisfied with Best Buy’s service.

By cleaning your Opal ice maker frequently (once a week) will keep the nugget ice tasting fresh and the machine looking great. Descaling should be performed every 2-3 weeks, depending on the hardness of water used. So far it isn’t as noisy as some of the other reviews say it is, so that’s a plus. Love the water tank on the side, it keeps me from refilling the water so often.

Then whenever you do have to descale it..you have to let it sit for 18 hours! You also have the choice of placing a filter inside which is an extra cost. Do I recommend it.. kinda?
