Awful Screeching Noise

I went through the sanitization process and the descaling process, even though I exclusively use distilled water, and it did not stop the noise. I have checked online extensively and GE has not provided a fix for this issue. I will be returning this product and will pick a different manufacturer.

Good Ice Maker BUT!!!

DO NOT BUY THIS ONE

I had to return the first one because of internal issues and now the replacement is having major issues just within the 4 weeks we had it. It freezes up several times a day, it makes shaved (slush) ice half of the time, the squeling and knocking of the machine becomes unbearable at times and we have to turn it off to get it to thaw out, which only works for a few hours before the issues start all over. We have cleaned it (sanitized and descaled) several times already and nothing has worked. This machine is a very expensive piece of junk.

Garbage

When I got my replacement item, it started doing the same thing within an hour after setting it up. This time, it started making a popping sound as well. I called GE because I thought I was doing something wrong. Turns out, they said this is a known issue. Their fix is to drain the machine and let it sit for 30 minutes and plug it back in. Mond you, the machine had not even made a full tub of ice at this point. This product is garbage.

Quality has gone way down

My previous Opal lasted over 4 years and I doubt the new one would last more than 1 year.

NOT a good performing, consistent product!

However, while it worked for a couple of weeks, it suddenly stopped making ice and GE customer support was useless and hard to deal with. Returned the first unit to Best Buy and the replacement unit was equally as bad. Replacement unit has not worked consistently, making ice sporadically and will be returned, as well. I expect for the price at the very least, good, solid support from a manufacturer. GE disappoints in this instance. Looks good, perfomrs poorly. 2 ⭐for aesthetics ONLY!

How often it's needed will depend on the quality of your water. To prolong times between cleaning, you might consider using distilled water instead of tap. So much better than the cheap ones

We've gone through a number of cheaper ice makers but this one is much better built, the filter keeps everything super clean, great piece of mind even though we fill it with RO water.

Posted .We'd like to assist with the operation of your opal. When your Opal needs defrosting, it may start to squeak as ice begins to build up around the mechanisms. The defrost cycle is automatic and usually takes about 10 to 20 minutes. This is normal operation.
What is not normal is if your Opal is going into Defrost mode too frequently, for example, every day, or goes into Defrost but there are no audible sounds indicating that the auger is frozen. If this is happening, it is highly likely the air vents are blocked. If airflow is constricted, the machine will not produce ice normally.
Be sure the unit has proper air clearance. There needs to be a minimum of 3" inches clearance on the back and the sides of the appliance to ensure proper airflow. Check to ensure that the side tank is not blocking either of the side vents. It should be pulled forward, in line with the front of the ice maker.
