    Bringing New Meaning to "Squeal Like a Pig"

    It serves the purpose really nicely, but it squeals extremely loudly quite regularly. We use distilled water and descale it weekly nonetheless and still get the squealing. Let me tell you, it is LOUD. In a 5000 sq ft house, you can hear the squealing everywhere. Quite distinctly. For people who work remotely like we do, it is a problem when you are on a call and the icemaker starts squealing. When it is not shrieking, it is wonderful. Really too bad.

      We're glad to hear you're happy with the Opal other than this issue you're having with sound; we'd like to look into this further. We have information about what sounds you may hear from your Opal in an article on our GE Appliances website titled "Opal Ice Maker - Normal Sounds"; you can view that when you look up the title on our website and click the 'Support' tab. We recommend disconnecting the Opal from power for three to four hours before reconnecting, to reset it; this can often solve an issue. If you continue to have this issue and think the sound isn't normal, please send us a private message via Facebook, Instagram, or X with your contact information, the complete model/serial numbers, a video of the sound you're hearing and a copy of this review.     In less than a week it was making whining noises and having problems with low water even though the tank is full. My previous Opal lasted over 4 years and I doubt the new one would last more than 1 year.

    I LOVE THE ice it makes. But its the thrid one ive bought because the other 2 stater to make this boise that was unbearable to hear. Bow im having to return this one too for the same reason.

    I just purchased this items and returned it because it started making a squealing sound. When I got my replacement item, it started doing the same thing within an hour after setting it up. This time, it started making a popping sound as well. I called GE because I thought I was doing something wrong. Turns out, they said this is a known issue. Their fix is to drain the machine and let it sit for 30 minutes and plug it back in. Mond you, the machine had not even made a full tub of ice at this point. This product is garbage.

    I'm going to have to return this machine . It's making a terrible noise! Makes ice but sometimes at random it makes a horrible noise

    Awful Screeching Noise

    This machine worked well for a short while before it started making a terrible screeching noise after operating for over an hour. I went through the sanitization process and the descaling process, even though I exclusively use distilled water, and it did not stop the noise. I have checked online extensively and GE has not provided a fix for this issue. I will be returning this product and will pick a different manufacturer.

      To ensure your Opal continues to make the freshest and most delicious ice available, it is necessary to descale and sanitize the unit on a regular basis. How often it's needed will depend on the quality of your water. To prolong times between cleaning, you might consider using distilled water instead of tap.     We had high expectations for this product and decided to purchase it based on prior experience with GE products. However, while it worked for a couple of weeks, it suddenly stopped making ice and GE customer support was useless and hard to deal with. Returned the first unit to Best Buy and the replacement unit was equally as bad. Replacement unit has not worked consistently, making ice sporadically and will be returned, as well. I expect for the price at the very least, good, solid support from a manufacturer. GE disappoints in this instance. Looks good, perfomrs poorly. 2 ⭐for aesthetics ONLY!

    Had it now for 2 weeks and can say I'm impressed. We've gone through a number of cheaper ice makers but this one is much better built, the filter keeps everything super clean, great piece of mind even though we fill it with RO water.

    This is my 3rd GE Profile-Opal. All 3 have stopped working. The most GE opal was purchased in June 2025. It has already given up. Love the ice while it works.

    Does not work and makes loud sound after cycle

    I bought this less than a month ago. From the first day I plugged it in, it started making a very loud sound. I attempted to return it with everything including the receipt, but since I was on day 16 (with a 14 day return policy) they refused to let me even do an even exchange. I asked to speak to a manager and was denied that right. I now have a very expensive ice maker that never worked to begin with.

    Great product but the light isn’t working anymore

    I would give a 5 star, however, the light in the machine has completely stopped working. We have only had the machine for 6 months and the light stopped working about a week ago.
