I have been really excited about the Samsung Gear VR. I've been to Best Buy several times but they never had one to try out before purchasing. I must say that the idea is sensational. The Samsung Gear VR is easy to use, light, apps are OK to star with but the only problem that made me give it a 3 stars is the resolution. The pixels are too evident! I have a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+. I have not tried with other phones. Maybe it's just my phone that is not the best for this device.

I have been looking forward to the Gear VR to come out and was not disappointed with the quality and games at all. I am not thrilled about the issue of overheating the phone and am hoping that Samsung is going to work on that in the software. I have played this a lot and have tested out the new concept apps that are now available in the Oculus home page. I would absolutely advise someone to get one of these if they have the supporting phones.

I was excited to try this out when I got my GS7 Edge. It's actually a pretty cool device. It's not perfect but a good step toward VR gaming. My son loves it. He's always asking to borrow my phone to play around. For me though, the novelty has worn off. I haven't picked it up since the first week of having it. Not really interested anymore. Get this if it's something you're really interested in.

This is a good awesome tech. The only problem is that it overheats when only playing GAMES! Netflix is awesome! it kinda makes me a little bit sick but not that bad. overall if you have a compatiable phone go ahead an buy it ! its worth the $99.

Just got this two days ago and I love it. I was really surprised my wife liked it, she really liked the game Dead Secret. Some games require a gamepad/controller, which is hard to find to purchase. One issue I was having was with my phone, it kept overheating. I fixed that by removing apps that I was not using and closing apps before using the Gear VR.

WOW! Amazing! I have been waiting for great VR all of my life and here it is! Samsung and Oculus combine for a homerun on this product. This is a game changer and the possibilities are endless. I bought multiple for friends and family for Christmas. Everyone that saw it was impressed at Thanksgiving.

If you saw the King Kong 360 and other virtual rides at Universal Studios, this is it guys (try the Jurassic World and Dreamworks Trailers free). I wish they will feature full movies soon. This is amazing. And your personal videos and netflix can be watched as if you are in a big theater. Just got mine pre ordered and Bestbuy and Amazon are out of stock now. Most apps in it are for sale though and you still have to subscribe to Netflix.

Runs good for around 30 minutes before your phone starts to overheat. Extend that if you leave the front shield off. Other than that, just pick up an android gamepad and play some of the most intense, imersive games. Or watch movies and videos in your own personal theater.

So got it today. Btw, some commenters seem puzzled. I bought it pre release and BB had it delivered to my door by the 20th so I had most of today playing around with it. Overall very very impressive especially at the price point. However, the resolution of videos leaves much to be desired. The one title you MUST buy is the Ashtar wars title. I watched a bunch of movies via netflix on it as well and its good but I still prefer a large tv or projector because the resolution really spoils the experience.

First of all, let me say I was over the moon excited about this product. I had done my homework, read the reviews, researched all I could until all there was left to do was go and buy it. Once I got it I was a little disappointed at the limited amount of apps Samsung offers in their store. I found more content and better might I add, through Google cardboard. I understand this is fairly a new product and it's not as advanced as I thought. Also, the focus wheel does not get text crystal clear and after a while it does hurt your eyes. I was also surprised that most of the landscaping 360 videos or real time travel desitinations we not even in HD, but poor resolution which was a bit shocking. Lastly, with the Samsung s6 the battery drain is terrible. Starting at 100% charge you can squeeze about 1.5 hours before your battery is done and my phone ran hot causing the VR to continously interupt whatever i was watching to alert me that my phone needed a time out to cool down. I give three stars simply because the idea of this product is great and exciting idea and the developers are certainly on the path to a great new way of entertainment!

    Great Entry Level Device

This is quite a great device at just a hundred dollars. If you are in the market to try out VR and see what all the fuss is about this is a great device to do that. The Oculus rift is going to cost 600 dollars so this is much cheaper. The experience isn't as good as the rift but for what you pay its pretty great. You must have a compatible phone to do this. Its easy to setup and start downloading videos games or streaming videos, its very easy to do through the home oculus screen. Would highly recommend.

First of all, I want to say that I believe 95% of these "reviews" are completely fake and merely pad the product rating. That being said... I found the price-point of this peripheral good enough to check it out. I used the demo model in the store with no real issue, so I made the purchase. Got it home, hooked my S6 into it, and the Oculus software started to download, no problem. I started using the VR. I really wanted to be able to watch shows/movie on Netflix with it. Within 10 minutes of use, my phone was scorching hot and the VR said it had to cool down to continue use. It took another 10 minutes to even be usable again, and within another 2 minutes, it needed to cool down again. 12 minutes of use, 20 minutes of cooling. So yeah, that was my entire VR experience. Sounds fun on paper... but is basically useless. Will be returning this tomorrow.

    Best Valentine's Day

I purchased this as a gift for my husband for Valentine's Day. He had been going on and on about how he wanted one, so I decided to buy it for him. It is so much fun! We have only been using it for a couple of days, but it's everything I thought it would be and more. It's really entertaining to watch someone use one too, so funny. I think it's so cool how you can look all around, it feels very realistic. I cannot compare this VR headset to any others, seeing as how this is the only one I have used. I think it is worth the money though. I know there are a couple higher end ones, but I didn't want to spend that much money. The only reason I rate this 4 stars and not 5 is I did get a little queasy when I was using a rollercoaster app. Also, the headset does make the phone hot and drains battery faster than normal.

    Minor changes from previous model

My review on the original Gear VR, SM-R322 (White) still holds true and is mostly written below. However, the differences between the two are minimal and if you want to “future proof” yourself for a possible phone upgrade, the fact that the SM-R323 (Black) has an interchangeable connection for Micro-USB and USB-C ensures that whatever format comes for the next Samsung Galaxy phone you should be good to go. The new model has a better, thicker headband that allows you to remove the top portion if you choose to. The feel on the face is about the same, but the fabric looks a little better constructed. The control panel on the side is flat, missing the directional feel, but functions the same and somewhat felt easier to control since I wasn’t looking for the indentions. The black color already felt like a benefit to me, to help reduce external light, and less noticeable is that they added a few additional holes inside to help reduce fog on the lenses. The one problem I have with the new one is that I feel like I am missing about 10 degrees from the field of view. The lenses inside are bigger, closer together, but the image feels closer and when looking straight on it is noticeable the amount of peripheral vision that is missing when comparing the two. A first time user of any Gear VR might not notice it, but when you have used the white version for a bit, it is really noticeable. I even used a 360 photo that shows the degrees and confirmed that it is about 10 degrees less than the white version. From my previous review of the White model: If you already have a Samsung Galaxy S6, S7, or Note 5, this is well worth the purchase. It is a great and easy way to be introduced to virtual reality. VR is making huge advances compared to what it used to be and as more applications come out it shows even more what it is capable of. It is amazing how VR can pull you in and create feelings that you would figure were impossible unless you were actually moving. However, there are a lot of issues that still need to be addressed. First thing, as many others have stated, is the overheating. There is nothing more fun spoiling than to be 10 minutes into a game to get the pop-up about it overheating. If you choose to continue and ignore it, the game becomes unplayable with a 1-4 frames per second refresh. There are methods to reducing the heat, but most require a third party purchase. Visually the screen door effect is very obvious and makes the screen look blurry, no matter how much you try to focus. However, once you get engrossed in a game or movie, the effect seems to fade away. This will surely get better as screens increase in their resolution and pixels per inch and you have to remember that you are looking at your phone really really close. Game prices are rather steep compared to other phone related games. I understand that they are more involved that your typical phone based game. However, I hate to pay $5.99 for an app only to find out that it is about 10 minutes worth of entertainment with no replay value. I do like how some of them have gone “free” with in-game purchases to get the full version if you find it worthy. It is hard to enjoy VR with others. Using Chromecast to mirror the screen to a TV looked very promising, until I found out that it cast the sound to the TV and not the headphones. Then, after about 5 seconds in the game, the video would freeze for external viewers but continue for the player. No matter the setting I tried, Chromecast would not work for me and my Note 5. I ended up purchasing MirrorOp, which is pricy app, but has made screen mirroring run really smooth, keep the sound in the headphones for the player, and really allowed the external viewers to enjoy the show and “mess” with the player. Having a Bluetooth controller is only required for a few games. Most of them can be controlled with the side touchpad, which once you get used to how touchy it is, works well. However, keeping my arm bent beside my head gets tiring quickly. If you already play controller based video games, having a Bluetooth controller is only natural. The button placement on most of them is very similar to what you would already be used to so they are familiar and easy to use. Having a controller also unlocks some features in apps that you don’t “need” a controller for, such as moving seats in the theater. Sitting in a swivel chair is the easiest way to play. Standing is always an option, but ensure the environment is clear around you and you are able to control vertigo. Some applications allow you to re-center the image, but most lock in the moment you activate the proximity sensor, which could happen from thumb placement or the head strap getting too close. Most of the time, taking it off and then putting it back on in the direction you want to face will re-center it as well. I do wish that some applications would let you force the center so that you could sit back and relax while playing and not forced to sit upright the entire time. There is a fair amount of material out there under the Samsung/Gear VR store, however, Google Cardboard already has so much material available. The Gear VR will not let you play that material by default, however, there is an app that can help with that as well. That app essentially helps unlock more potential for the device. Some of it does not play as smoothly as the material made to run with Oculus, but still gives more options. Overall I feel it was well worth it. I have almost contemplated buying myself a new phone so that I could leave my Note 5 as a dedicated VR screen, but then I realize that I don’t use it that much, especially since the novelty of it has worn down a bit. If only Samsung incorporated a cooling method for the phone I would have rated this higher.

An okay product, but will be returning

I read all the good reviews and thought that the product was a great deal considering the price, so I went to Best buy to pick one up yesterday. I had no problems with the set up and found the games available to be really fun. However, there were a few things that I hadn't realized about the product that have led me to decide to return the product. The first thing I noticed was that for a petite girl, the headset was quite heavy and the foam put a lot of pressure on my forehead, causing that area to hurt after minutes of use. Then I realized that some games needed a wireless controller in order to be played. That wasn't a deal breaker for me however, and I considered buying one in order to be able to play more games. Nevertheless, what was the deal breaker for me was that my Samsung Galaxy S6 kept heating up after a few minutes of gameplay and once that occured, it caused head movements ingame to be very laggy and jerky, which gave me a headache. Additionally, because the screen on the Galaxy s6 is smaller compared to the S6+ and Note, I did notice black edges where the display ended, making the games not as immersive. If not for the overheating issues, I have no doubt that I wold be keeping this and investing in a controller as well as a few paid games. However, I will be returning this since I don't think spending all that money only to be able to play for a few minutes at a time to be a good expenditure.

I was shopping for copy paper. Saw this in the Samsung section, tried it on with Cirque Du Soleil playing. SOLD! I've had it almost a week now and I have to hunt for it because someone is always using it. Temple Run made me jump a few times. Better to use Wi-Fi if you don't have unlimited data on your phone. I assure you, nothing on the internet will be able to show you the real experience of this VR. Go to Best Buy and check it out yourself. Cool Netflix set-up.

The experience of the Gear VR has been better then I expected, and everyone I have let try it.. With Oculus working on the software side for Samsung they have put together a GREAT store to compliment Samsung's hardware.. This only works with 2015 Samsung S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge Plus and Note 5.. While these have GREAT screens their PPI (pixels per inch) is still not enough to overcome the "screen door" effect.. BUT.. As immersive as the experience is, you often get over it.. The limitations of the the current phones (screen and overheating within 1-2 hours) are the biggest issues, but I still give it a 5 because of how GOOD the overall experience is..The stores has 100s of FREE and Pay Games and VR Experiences.. When Samsung moves to 4k phones with 800+ PPI, then this will be an even BETTER experience.. (Hopefully this unit will still support the upcoming S7, but likely not),,
