An Awful Blu-Ray Release for an Iconic Classic

Ghost in the Shell is one of my favorite anime movies of all time. I've owned the DVD for some time and was hesitant to buy the Blu-Ray because I had heard it wasn't great, but when I saw this steelbok, I caved and bought it. Let me tell you, this is an awful Blu-Ray release. Manga Entertainment should be ashamed for releasing such a poor product for the 25th anniversary of the GitS manga. Almost everything is better on my DVD than it is on this Blu-Ray. First off, I will say that in the area of picture and sound quality, it doesn't disappoint. There's nothing to much complain about there. If you want Ghost in the Shell in HD, this is the best option. The only thing I'd note about it is that the picture is significantly brighter than o the DVD, which isn't a big deal, but I feel the darker lighting fits the tone of the movie better. Brightening it up probably wasn't such a good move, but this is a minor gripe. Now on the my real complaint: the subtitles. I watch Ghost in the Shell with Japanese audio and English subtitles because, honestly, the English dub isn't good at all (and this is coming from someone who likes English dubs). The subtitles on the DVD were fine, actually, they were more than fine, they were perfect, but the subtitles on the DVD are HORRIBLE. Even as someone who knows next-to-none of the Japanese language, I can tell that these subtitles were horribly translated, and a comparison between the subtitles on the Blu-Ray and the subtitles on the DVD just solidifies this even more. They're so poorly translated that lines lose their emotional impact entirely, and some of them are so improperly translated that they don't even make sense! It's mind boggling to think that they couldn't just take the old subtitles from the DVD and put them on the Blu-Ray, but no, instead they half-hardheartedly re-do them. If you're one of the very few people who likes the English dub for this movie, then you probably won't have a problem with the subtitles being bad, but as for the rest of us, this Blu-Ray release is next to unwatchable. What about special features? Since this is a release commemorating the 25th anniversary of the manga, you'd think there would be some exclusive features on here, but nope. There are literally no special features on this Blu-Ray. None. This is even more pathetic when you consider that even the DVD had a few special features, even if it was only one or two things. The fact the they couldn't even put in the effort to transfer those special features form the DVD to the Blu-Ray is astoundingly lazy. As for the steelbook itself, it's pretty cool. The front shows the puppet master (which is weird since the cover has traditionally always been Motoko), and the back is pretty much blank aside from the cyber design that's also on the front. The inside shows a close up of Motoko from the original GitS poster, so I guess the switching of the cover was made up for there. Conclusion: This is an awful re-release. There are almost no redeeming qualities to it besides the fact the it is in HD for the first time ever. The subtitles are awful and render the movie almost unwatchable and the are no special features at all. There is literally no reason someone should buy this if they have the DVD. If you have the DVD, keep it and don't bother buying this. If you don't own Ghost in the Shell at all, please, for the love of anime, buy the DVD and not this poor excuse of a Blu-Ray transfer. This is probably the only Blu-Ray I've bought where I can say without a doubt that the DVD is superior in almost every way.

One of the coolest steelbooks I've seen the steelbook has a slip cover that has the Major's face on it and when you slide it off to open the case you are greeted with the exoskeleton of the Major's head very very cool design choice. The movie itself looks better than ever in 4k with a new Atmos track to boot which changes this movies experience drastically. I would absolutely recommend this to Anime fans and steelbook collectors alike.

Ghost in the Shell is an anime that I grew up on. I grew up on the original 96 movie as well as the Standalone Complex show that aired weekly on Toonami/Adult Swim. This new 4K transfer is very good. Usually a lot of animes or cartoons receive very digital looking restorations, but this one kept a good amount of the grain. The only thing that held back was some softness from digital alterations. Regardless of that, it's a very good upgrade from the old Blu-ray. I bought this in steelbook packaging and I love it. It's very well packaged and the art design was worth every dollar. I recommend this if you are a fan, it's worth picking up.

The audio is clean and punchy, the colors are vibrant and rich, the HDR highlights are well done, not too flat or overwhelming. If you like this movie, then this is by far the definitive version. I like the steel case too, definitely worth the extra $2. The code inside redeems at 4k on vudu. Well worth the price to see this influential anime in arguably better form than the initial theater release. A true reference version of a great film.

It's still the majestic Motoko drifting and transcendalizing herself in the ocean's undercurrents while Batou passively awaits sipping beer and pondering her ghost-in-the-shell psyche's motivations above on the sea's surface level. It's a great upgrade to blue ray with its enhanced DTS HD sound, and you even get a cool metal box. Come and discover Motoko Kusinagi again or for the first time if never before! Don't forget the original is a masterpiece!

Ghost in the Shell is by far one of my favorite anime films, and one of the best of all time as well - though Akira is much better in my opinion. Though this is an animated film, this is definitely a film for adults. The themes explored are extremely complex and the animation compliments the story better than most of this genre. The steelbook version only comes with the original BD of Ghost in the Shell, not 2.0, which is fine with me, as I wasn't a big fan of the cgi enhancements made in the 2.0 version - and being a steelbook collector, I simply couldn't resist.

Lion Gates’ plastic slip cover well protect this beautiful steelbook from damage. I found one disc is losen in the case. Fortunately there is no damage to the disc. The movie is classic. The Japanese dub’s credit ending song is not the original song but the English song. Tere are two lines dialogue loss around 59’ in the Jap Atmos track. Despite these flaws. This is still a good collection to buy for any fan of cyberpunk movie

The remaster on this release is truly fantastic. Crisp lines, highly visible detail, and a clear view of the gorgeous background art. The audio is equally spectacular, with voices clearly audible and sounds/music beautifully mixed. Most importantly, the film is still a stunning masterpiece of animation and atmosphere.

This is one of the most interesting and colorful steelbooks best buy has ever brought us. Great bright metallic colors with a nice shimmer to the paint, the slip also nicely matches with the steelbook underneath. The master on the discs is improved over previous versions and a nice upgrade for all collectors. As for the movie it is a wonderful piece of sci-fi that clearly has inspired later classics like the Matrix.

This 1995 anime is one of the titles that allowed anime to break into the mainstream in North America. And there is a reason for that! Even 20 years on, the animation looks stunning. The character designs are sleek and very detailed. The plot can seem a bit too convoluted for its own good, but upon a rewatch or two, the way everything ties together will make more sense. If you haven't seen this yet, this new bluray release is very much worth it. If you bought the previous 2.0 bluray, buy this one and trade in that awkward version. No dumb CGI insert shots here!

I watched many anime movies, and Ghost in a Shell is a great movie with amazing visuals and animation. Even though it is short, it's such a great movie to watch for anime fans. For the 4K and Dolby Vision, it looks nice, the colors may be saturated for animation but it's good for HDR details. I have a Sony 4K player and it is nice to watch it on my Hisense 4K TV.

Having seen this many times over the years I wanted to try the 4K version to see if there was any difference. Without a doubt the picture and sound quality are better than I would have imagined. The only issue I experienced was with a flickering picture that persisted throughout the movie. I turned off Dolby Vision on my 4K player which fixed the issue. I highly recommend this version of the movie.

There is only one tiny problem: there is a stanza of poetry (taken from Walt Whitman's "I Sing the Body Electric") that appears at the beginning. It's written in Japanese, and the translation only appears on the screen if you're watching the movie in the original Japanese.

Like the summary says, it's the original version but in HD! I was holding out on getting this for a friend since they enjoyed the new live-action film to show them how it's supposed to be ;P But I didn't want to get them the GitS 2.0 film because I hated to added CGI that stood out so starkly against the traditional animation. If you've seen the new movie, I totally recommend getting this to see where it all came from (not to mention this film was also an inspiration for The Matrix movies too!).

Probably one of the most significant anime’s of all time. It questions our existence as well as challenges our perceptions on what it means to be human. The live action film got the aesthetics right but lacked the philosophy and heart. Watch the original film before the live action one. Also, this slip cover Steelbook is easily Top 5 Steelbooks of all time in my opinion. Gorgeous cover.

This is one of my favorite anime films that helped me get into the genre and the improved picture and sound is better than the Blu-ray, but a major improvement over the Blu-ray release from the 25th Anniversary Edition for the anniversary of the manga is it has a better translation for the Japanese version’s English Subtitle track. It’s worth it if you’re a fan of GitS or anime altogether.

Ghost in the Shell once again hits home video, this time in a 25th anniversary edition that puts the original movie (not the altered 2.0 version) on Blu-ray, complete with a new subtitle script. But there are no extras on the disc (or any worth mentioning), and the Steelbook package, for some reason, doesn't have the booklet that comes in the regular package of this title. Still, it's the original movie, complete with all the original voices, sound effects, and music, so one can't really complain about that (especially after the 2.0 release)...but there should be more where there isn't on this disc.

Fantastic cover art and slip cover adds a great addition to the image as well. I've said in a previous review I've bought this film is many different formats over the years and probably will again at some point lol. This is a great introductory movie for newcomers to anime. This and Akira are two of the most definitive animes and still hold up to this day!
