Ghost In The Shell - Watch this movie...
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It's Ghost In The Shell! I have acquired almost every version and episode of this phenomenal manga series. So many later movies were based on, or urged by this movie. The wife hates it because it's a little risque, but no where near as much as other movies, I think. It's all sensationalized, but it's the plot that rocks. Would Matrix have happened without this movie? Good question, and so many others too. I think not. People rip Tron for being so (something), but that movie pushed technology and the whole art a lot farther too! GREAT MOVIE, Spawned a great series. Hopefully there will be more. Great special features here too!

A timeless film that still holds up to this day
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Ghost in the Shell has always had a special place in the lives of anime watchers and the medium's history in general. With profound ideologies, incredible character development, and an unforgettable story, Ghost in the Shell makes you think about what the future could be, and what it means to be human when technology has reigned supreme. Technology consumes us, but here it's almost literal, and with everything interconnected, Motoko Kusanagi does what she can to make sure the citizens stay alive and things are in order from going completely haywire. Ghost in the Shell is up there with the likes of Akira, and of course Studio Ghibli films, in terms of seminal works of art that continue to leave an impact on the artform.

||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I need go watch again, it was hard for me to follow. Might enjoy the movie more after another rewatch or 2. The actual movie looks really good for a 4k however.

One of the Greatest Anime Movies of All Time!
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This classic anime movie gets new life for new and old fans to enjoy. In the distant future, Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg public-security agent, must work with her team of elite crime solvers to hunt down a hacker known as the Puppet Master. Hailed as one of the greatest anime and science fiction movies of all time, "Ghost in the Shell" has inspired the likes of James Cameron and the Wachowski brothers. Total recommendation.

Anime classic never looked or sounded so good
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. For comparison, I previously owned this movie on DVD and thought it looked great in that format, but this new 4K transfer is quite a step up, not just for the extra resolution (sharper lines, increased detail), but the colors are more vibrant and the contrast range is much greater (brighter whites and darker blacks). Even more noticeable is the improvements to the audio tracks- higher environmental detail and crisp dialog (Dolby Atmos in English and Japanese). It all is very well done. The special features are interesting, but only in 1080P (like many films)

Definitely worth the upgrade, but...
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Absolutely a must for anyone who is an anime and/or sci-fi fan. If you have previous home video versions this is definitely worth the upgrade. The video and audio quality is fantastic, especially for an older, non-digitally animated movie. Nice amount of extras, too. The only negative, and what kept it from being a 5 star review, is that the end credit music is not the original. The movie has a striking soundtrack. Whether it was a mistake or some licensing issue, it's a shame. The soundtrack for the rest of the movie is the original. Honestly, if I could give 4.5 stars, I would since it is just the end credit music, but I couldn't justify a full 5 stars.

A Landmark Animated Film
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Once again we have a classic film offered with upgraded image and video quality that makes it the must own version. This disc offers an audio commentary, a retrospective measuring the impact of the Ghost in the Shell franchise, a featurette looking at the film's aesthetics, a behind the scenes featurette and of course a trailer. There is some minor controversy about the song used in the closing credits being changed for this release but you shouldn't let that spoil an otherwise excellent presentation of a landmark film.

Ghost in the Shell
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First off the steelbook artwork is excellent, that's the main reason why I got it for collectors I enjoy this franchise. The audio and video transfer into 4K is excellent. I watched it right away when I got it and then I watched Scarlett Johansson's 2017 version right after, they're great to watch back to back I recommend this movie for anyone who is a fan of the franchise.

Classic anime
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is one of the best classic anime ever. While the art is no longer considered state of art, it was considered one back when it was released. The plot is terrific and the music is outstanding. This movie was re-released as GITS 2.0 which tried to used CG but it failed miserably as it did not mate well with the scenes without CG. My only misgivings is that the subtitles need some updating as the translation seems outdated. The 4K transfer offers a little more dynamic range but the transfer is still outstanding.

Good case but the original audio is mehh
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.its alright if you own the bluray versions keep those cause they dont have all the origianl contenet that was on the blurays on the 4k. its great to have on 4k and ghost does look really nice in 4k there are some improvements on the 4k but not much. Since it was made in the 80’s or so the picture quality is not the top notch you would expect from todays standerds. The case is nice and I love how they include a slip cover for the steel book case as well. Some careful treatment is always nice to have especially for steelbook cases. I wish other steel book cases or the steel book cases that are coming out now have follow this same treatment too. In the end a good buy even if its missing the original score or not the same one you grew up.

Love the Original
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I love this anime movie. Its smart and the animation looks great. The picture doesnt look great but its an old movie so I doubt they can make the picture quality clearer and vibrant than today's animes. Anyway the picture quality really adds to the atmosphere along with the excellent music. The movie also has a little bit of letter boxing when watching it but its better than cropping and losing all of the picture. The story is very intelligent and might lose you if you dont pay attention carefully.

Great quality images for a classic movie
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I don't have to tell you about how good the movie is. This is one of the movies that introduced Japanese animation to Western audiences, it's been endlessly analyzed by philosophers and film buffs. You can watch this over and over and continuously find new things to think about. As for the image quality, older chemical film tends to make the transition to 4K better than older films that were shot digitally. As expected, this looks beautiful on a good 4K TV.

Very nice package and movie
||Posted . Owned for 4 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. One of the top nicest looking steelbooks I own. I really like the transparent slipcover trend that also worked really well on Knives Out and recent Halloween and Evil Dead steelbooks. The picture and audio on the UHD are great. The package is very nice. I bought this movie without having seen before and I don't regret it. I'm not really big on anime, but this is a great movie to have in my collection and the extra features are really interesting.

Great Addition to the Collection!
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Haven’t seen the movie yet so this review is more about the packaging! First off I think the steelbook is great and very good looking, I love how the sleeve isn’t standard cardboard and is actually plastic, wish all movie sleeves were plastic. Secondly love the fact that they remastered this anime in 4K and trust me, more anime needs to be done in 4K as the sound and visuals pop surprisingly nice. Lastly Best Buy needs to stop sending movies in padded envelopes! Use little boxes, my steelbook had a small dent near the top of it, not sure if that was done during shipping or prior but either way. If you buy this or any other movie from Best Buy, go and pick it up if you can.

An Awful Blu-Ray Release for an Iconic Classic
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Ghost in the Shell is one of my favorite anime movies of all time. I've owned the DVD for some time and was hesitant to buy the Blu-Ray because I had heard it wasn't great, but when I saw this steelbok, I caved and bought it. Let me tell you, this is an awful Blu-Ray release. Manga Entertainment should be ashamed for releasing such a poor product for the 25th anniversary of the GitS manga. Almost everything is better on my DVD than it is on this Blu-Ray. First off, I will say that in the area of picture and sound quality, it doesn't disappoint. There's nothing to much complain about there. If you want Ghost in the Shell in HD, this is the best option. The only thing I'd note about it is that the picture is significantly brighter than o the DVD, which isn't a big deal, but I feel the darker lighting fits the tone of the movie better. Brightening it up probably wasn't such a good move, but this is a minor gripe. Now on the my real complaint: the subtitles. I watch Ghost in the Shell with Japanese audio and English subtitles because, honestly, the English dub isn't good at all (and this is coming from someone who likes English dubs). The subtitles on the DVD were fine, actually, they were more than fine, they were perfect, but the subtitles on the DVD are HORRIBLE. Even as someone who knows next-to-none of the Japanese language, I can tell that these subtitles were horribly translated, and a comparison between the subtitles on the Blu-Ray and the subtitles on the DVD just solidifies this even more. They're so poorly translated that lines lose their emotional impact entirely, and some of them are so improperly translated that they don't even make sense! It's mind boggling to think that they couldn't just take the old subtitles from the DVD and put them on the Blu-Ray, but no, instead they half-hardheartedly re-do them. If you're one of the very few people who likes the English dub for this movie, then you probably won't have a problem with the subtitles being bad, but as for the rest of us, this Blu-Ray release is next to unwatchable. What about special features? Since this is a release commemorating the 25th anniversary of the manga, you'd think there would be some exclusive features on here, but nope. There are literally no special features on this Blu-Ray. None. This is even more pathetic when you consider that even the DVD had a few special features, even if it was only one or two things. The fact the they couldn't even put in the effort to transfer those special features form the DVD to the Blu-Ray is astoundingly lazy. As for the steelbook itself, it's pretty cool. The front shows the puppet master (which is weird since the cover has traditionally always been Motoko), and the back is pretty much blank aside from the cyber design that's also on the front. The inside shows a close up of Motoko from the original GitS poster, so I guess the switching of the cover was made up for there. Conclusion: This is an awful re-release. There are almost no redeeming qualities to it besides the fact the it is in HD for the first time ever. The subtitles are awful and render the movie almost unwatchable and the are no special features at all. There is literally no reason someone should buy this if they have the DVD. If you have the DVD, keep it and don't bother buying this. If you don't own Ghost in the Shell at all, please, for the love of anime, buy the DVD and not this poor excuse of a Blu-Ray transfer. This is probably the only Blu-Ray I've bought where I can say without a doubt that the DVD is superior in almost every way.
