Excellent Case, but lens scratches easily

The lens cover however scratches very easily. Purchased for my 64 year husband, who is retired. He's very gentle with it, and loves it. So how does the lens cover keep getting scratched? The material needs to be made harder, as it is too soft. This is the only down side to it, otherwise I would have rated 5 stars.
