Solid laptop for gaming while traveling, the 4050 will struggle in newer games but it did run the Battlefield 6 beta fairly well. I wouldn’t recommend it for a everyday rig but definitely a good option for when you’re mobile.

With the advent of devices like the Steam Deck, which make getting into PC gaming much cheaper and more accessible than ever before, it's a little difficult to justify the cost of a full-fledged gaming laptop, even a budget one. There may be compatibility issues, and there may be some games you just can't play, but for most people, the Steam Deck is an excellent place to start exploring what Steam and gaming on non-console devices is like. With that said, it's hard to deny the additional functionality of gaming laptops for applications outside of games, and if that's something you care about, I think this is a great place to get into it. It's got a number of quirks. For starters, it doesn't charge over USB C, or least it doesn't as far as I could find. The charger included is a standard barrel-jack charger. There's a USB C port on the laptop, but it doesn't seem to accept power delivery. Not a big deal, but it's a little annoying if you're like me and like to have as few extra chargers around as possible. The keyboard backlight is permanently stuck at the shade of blue shown in the promotional photos. It is not RGB, it can only be that blue, or turned off. Speaking of it being turned off, it seems to only turn on when the laptop is plugged in. There may be some setting to change that somewhere, but I couldn't find it with a cursory search. There's only 16 gigs of RAM. I imagine it's upgradable (I didn't open it up to check), and you're probably going to want to do that. With some more RAM heavy tasks running, it can start to get a little bogged down. With all those caveats out of the way, I really should iterate that this is a fantastic computer, and performed much better than I expected. It's fast - you can get to webpages and navigate the computer without having to wait longer than an app or website's splash screen, or however long it takes for your internet to catch up. It games, and significantly better than I thought. I didn't test with particularly intense games - Dark Souls Remastered, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2, Elden Ring DLC - but in all of those games, it ran at either medium or high settings at a clean 60 frames per second. The screen has a high refresh rate, so if it's not FPS locked, you could probably do better than that and it would be worthwhile. The screen's colors are a little washed out, compared to something like my HDR QLED television, but that's not a fair comparison. It looks great, and it's matte, so you don't have to deal with glare. It has solid viewing angles. It's great. The speakers on this also surprised me. They get loud, and they sound crisp and clear. They lack bass, but that's pretty par for the course with laptop speakers. These impressed me. I think this is a great gaming laptop for people who don't want to make a massive financial investment into it, but want more flexibility than something like a Steam Deck offers. You'll be able to play most of the games you want to without having to worry about tweaking settings too much. You could probably upgrade RAM and storage for pretty cheap, too, but again, I never opened it up to check. Would definitely recommend.

I have spent a couple weeks with the GIGABYTE GAMING A16 series, and so far, it brings a good combination of gaming performance with day to day productivity, no complaints. I has a good first impression straight out of the box. The laptop has a solid build and Black Steel finish which looks solid and understated. GIGABYTE's Golden Curve Keyboard provides a comfortable typing experience with a reassuring amount of key travel to allow for comfort for both writing and gaming with ease. Internally, the 32 Gb of DDR5 RAM and Intel Core i7-13620H processor keeps the PC running smoothly. I tested the system with many browser tabs open and a VM running. Even while running a lightweight game, I did not experience anything noticeable. Even when diving into more demanding games, the GeForce RTX 4050 card plays games well at high settings, in 1080p resolution. I was averaging around 60 - 70 FPS on the new AAA titles. The 165 Hz, 16:10 display provides a nice smooth experience while playing fast paced games while allowing for a bit more vertical screen space for pages and web pages with spreadsheets. Storage performance is solid since you will find a 512 GB Gen4 SSD. Windows 11 booted in less than 10 seconds, and applications loaded almost instantly. If you need more storage space, the chassis supports a 4 TB SSD too. One downside would be the fans can get loud when they are under load. The battery life was peaking around 4 - 5 hours off of mixed use so you will want to stay near an outlet for long periods of time, and the stereo speakers which are only internally and are enhanced with Dolby Atmos, sound decent, but could use more bass. Overall, the GAMING A16 is a great system and delivers on performance for the price point. Overall, I think that if you want gaming performance that will be reliable for other daily tasks as well, the GAMING A16 makes sense!

Unboxing this laptop the first thing I noticed was how beefy it is. For a 16" laptop, which I have a couple of similar size, it is noticeably heavier. But it also did give me a feeling of a well built solid laptop that may be able to take some abuse. I understand that gaming laptops has different hardwre and software that probably needs more components than regular ones, therefore the size and weight. This being a entry level laptop, I was very happy witth it's performance and design all the way around. First the screen is bright and sharp. The bezel around the screen is a good size meaning not big which I don't like. Makes me feel the screen is smaller than it actually is. Trackpad is centered and smooth. No issues with tracking with my fingers. Travel and size on the keys where nice, I didn't feel cluttered and didn't have any issues with hitting the wrong keys. Screen is hinged so it will go to 180 degrees, so very adjustable. Plenty of ports to attach most of what I needed. As for gaming itself, I found no issues in any of the games I play. It was smooth and without lag. Mind you, I'm a casual gamer. Nothing that is graphic intensive like some other's in my house. The only thing that I found as a negative is that the fan did kick on a lot and was a little loud. The laptop did get warm at times, but nothing that had me worried. Did really is a solid gaming laptop and I can see that it can definitely even useful as a work laptop, even though it might not be the most portable.

For the price under a thousand dollars, this is a capable laptop. The CPU is i7 13th generation, with 16 G of RAM. Solid state hard drive is half a terabyte (512 GB)-plenty of room (until you run out)-but no memory card slot, which is a shame. The screen is full HD (1900 x 1200) IPS / LED (non touch) and it's beautiful. The refresh rate is 165 hz - right for most games. The GPU is RTX 4050 (not bad really). Took almost all day to download Windows 11 Home patches and updates. No fault of Gigabyte (nor any computer makers out there), but those users who have never used Windows may find it frusterating. There is no numeral keypad - this keeps the size down (16 inch screen). It comes with GiMate - Gigabyte's own program - and it deals with various settings (including update that Windows Update doesn't can't find). Dolby Atmos makes Netflix shows (or others) fun to watch. There is no optical drive (hardly any laptops come with one now), but my external blu-ray drive works fine with it. It's not something you may want to carry around (say, to class) - as the box it came in was > 10 pounds, and the laptop itself is almost shoulder-breaking. Thankfully the power supply isn't that big (compared to another brand). RAM can be expanded per their website to 64 GB (and SSD too), but I am not ready for that. The screen opens up all the way to 180 degree ("hinge design"). This means it opens up to a flat position. Some people may find it useful (but the screen isn't touch-sensitive.. ) Time to try some games. I have some old (and recent) games that were recomplied for current Windows. Dead Space, Quake 4, BioShock Remaster, Aliens vs Predator. I ran these games at the maximum settings and they didn't studder. The screen responded as it should (and beautifully, too). I also tried StreamFab and was able to download a show and played a game at the same time-no hick ups there. Lastly I installed and ran Nuance Dragon Medical (voice dictation). It works perfectly fine. The computer is fast enough for real time voice dictation (and even for a slower computer, the program will buffer the data anyway). The driver for Nvidia card natually had to be updated. It takes time to download this. Battery life? I charged it up and let it run for about 8 hours and the battery life was down to 25%. (Note: you could and should go to Windows' power setting and play around with how much power it uses..) USB 3, HDMI, ethernet, USB 2 connections are there. But no memory card slot??!!! By the way the GiMate, if you dig deeper into what it can do, you can play around with user interface by downloading models from hugging face. This is quite complicated and I am still learning.. Just remember-this has RTX 4050 GPU, and it's an ENTRY LEVEL GPU. It works, but don't expect it to be anything more (you kinda get what you pay for (for a laptop) except when it comes to 4090 or 5090 which aren't exactly the same as the desktop ones. So if you need a GPU with a load of memory built in, this is not it. But it does play games that I have well at 1080p. Is worth the money? For what it is - yes. You can't and shouldn't expect more out of this. But if you want to use it for business or school, it's a fine computer. It feels solid (it's heavy) and should last a while. You kinda get what you pay for when it comes to high end laptop (you'd get more if this were a desktop and you know this), but it's a capable laptop that should be able to do what you need with it. Recommended - if you know what you are doing.

The Gigabyte A16 gaming laptop is a great laptop for those wanting to get into PC/ portable gaming without breaking the bank. You get very good overall performance, with a couple things that are upgradeable. The laptop itself has an amazing build and design that I really like. Especially the large logo on the bottom. Most companies wouldnt care to think about the look of the bottom, but the attention to detail here is awesome. My favorite color on devices is matte black so I love its looks a lot. Its got a nice heft to it, but not too heavy. It also has all the ports you will ever need. The 1900X1200 screen looks great with a nice high 165Hz refresh rate. This makes for some very nice detail and smoothness that really adds the immersion. As far as performance goes it has a Intel Core i7-13620H Processor and a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050 GPU, combined with a 512gb SSD and 16gb of DDR5 Ram that allows very good gameplay and overall performance. 1080P gameplay is plenty for me. Battery life is on par with most other gaming laptops and of course completely depends on what you are doing. Heavy gameplay from something like a first person shooter is going to zap it a lot faster then something like a puzzle game. But overall I am OK with the battery life. The Dolby Atmos speakers sound pretty good for small speakers. You can crank them up and still get very good clear audio. Of course bass isnt going to blow you away, but that is to be expected. Overall I am happy with this gaming laptop. It is the perfect entry level laptop to get into gaming. Its not going to be playing Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K, but most games play nice at 720 and 1080p.

Great gaming on a budget... with limitations

While this isn’t the prettiest or the most powerful gaming laptop, the GIGABYTE A16 does well what it needs to do… game! Before I could get to gaming, I, like many others, had the hardest time just getting the laptop up and running. I got stuck in several failed windows update loops during setup. Even after setup, windows updates dragged on (in fact a week later I still have a Windows update lingering in the background at the same 94% since day 1). However, once I got the laptop up and running it was game time. Download speeds are great, my Steam downloads were hitting my max bandwidth for the office side of my house. It also has an ethernet port alongside 3x USB-As, 1x USB-C, 1x HDMI, and luckily, still, a headphone jack. Gaming on the actual laptop is decent, you can see the raw power under the hood but unfortunately it’s lost on the poor IPS display and weak, tinny speakers. In terms of performance, I’ve had no issue running many indie games as expected based on the i7 and RTX 4050. I wanted to throw at it Elden Ring because who doesn’t love Elden Ring. It worked mostly great! See below the settings but I was averaging around 60fps. However there were occasional, significant dips, dropping all the way down to 25fps briefly before back up to the 50-60 window. It seemed to become less and less the longer I played, maybe due to shaders being cached in the background. I also wanted to play a more-resource intensive game so I booted up Pacific Drive, again see below for settings) and I was getting an average of 50fps with much less hiccups. Elden Ring: ~55fps Avg (but with some major occasional dips), full resolution, Maximum graphics settings, no ray-tracing Pacific Drive: ~50fps Avg, full resolution, ultra graphics settings, no ray-tracing I think this goes into my next point of, if you have this much cash to spend and are debating a handheld or a gaming laptop, it really depends on what you are looking for. For Pacific Drive, I have to crank the settings down to medium and even then I’m getting like 30fps. Playable but not anything to write home about. My handheld was the same price. It is more convenient since this laptop is large, but also this is going to get you a lot more power for the buck. At its price right now, it’s a solid budget gaming laptop choice. On a sale, this could be a killer deal… as long as you come in knowing the limitations of the storage, the display, and the speakers. Pros: Solid price for great performance All the ports you could need 512GB storage doesn’t get you many games these days Variable refresh rate display Cons: Had to restart during setup due to failed windows update Severely limited on battery (graphics not available, processor severely throttled) Updates after setup were taking literal hours while steam downloaded at full speed Display is a rather subpar IPS Speakers are weak and tinny, but you won’t necessarily hear them over the fan noise.

I've spent a week with the A16, and used it for a variety of tasks, from schoolwork to streaming, and some light to moderate gaming. I am not a huge gamer, and many of the games I play might not excite the avid gamers, but they can bog down a lesser unit and make it run hot. In the case of the A16, the processor is quick and handles schoolwork, everyday tasks, and light gaming super smoothly. Typing feels great with super responsive keys, and a nice layout which makes it so it’s easy to knock out assignments or type for long stretches without getting annoyed. In fact, I love how nice the keyboard is for typing. Often, gaming laptops don't focus on ergonomics, but the A16 is extremely comfortable to spend a long time on, with solid, tactile keys, and a cool surface. Graphics are solid too but nothing overly crazy. It handled my war games and simulators and Hearts of Iron 4 without too much trouble. The fan’s not loud either, which is super convenient and not distracting when gaming or working on various assignments. I was able to play Sea of Thieves with friends online without too many issues, except for one: the Wi-Fi. During downloads, gaming, streaming, or working online; I noticed connection speeds would suddenly drop off. Thinking it must be my network, I tried several different checks on my router and mesh system but couldn't find anything wrong. It got a little frustrating when I was in the middle of something online or trying to install updates, games, software etc. Other than that, its a well-rounded laptop, and gets the job done for both productivity and light gaming. If you don’t need top tier specs but want something that feels good to use and holds up through everyday use, it is definitely worth looking into.
