Should be easy but many traps. Totally dependent on their tech support. Porting numbers is not seamless as they don’t recognize many of the now common discount carriers.
Expect to spend days getting your phone to work. In addition Best Buy knows little about the product and won’t give any support. They sold us two SIM cards for data use that Google said was wrong. Must use a special SIM card for Data only use. Thanks Best Buy for a wasted $20.
We are now in Europe with no service due to Best Buy and Google incompetence.

1st off this isn't entirely Best Buys fault...
On the inside of the packaging, on the sim card holder there is an "activate by" date. For 2 BB stores every single one they had onhand were expired for 2 to 4 months.
There's no way to tell unless you open them and look at the sim card.
Poor design on Google Fi's side.

Its just a regular Google Fi SIM card but costs money unlike the one that you get straight for Google Fi's website because that's free and ships within 2 days in most places.

Please, take my advice. Do not waste your money on this cell phone alternative unless you have a Google Phone, otherwise you will not have access to multiple networks, which is their claim to fame. Also, many iPhone users, myself included, lost the ability to send and/or receive messages from Android users. I stopped using it after a couple of weeks bc it was just pointless.

Much gripe about the fi project cellular service, although I didn't succumb to becoming a user, I still had difficulty reaching relative who is a user. The Google issues are there, no body answers, and it affects those you need to contact by extension, for instance, getting notifications in place of calls, being 'offline' so on and so forth. I'd stick to a Telecom provider vs. brands that want to be everything, namely Google!

I got tired of paying $70 a month on T mobile. I use less than 2 GB of data a month so with Google Fi I know my bill will be around $50 a month with the same usage. Google fi uses T mobile so coverage should be the same and I love that international calls to most countries is just 5 cents a minute.
The transfer process is super smooth. I just logged in to T mobile website so change my account PIN. you need that to initiate the number transfer to Google Fi. Within 10 minutes I had my number transferred and working on Google Fi.
If you're about to join Fi, use my referral code 441DJV to get $20 off your bill.

Supposed to work internationally but can't be activated internationally. We tried to activate in a European airport while on wifi and couldn't activate it. So no idea how well it works, but I guess you need to start your service timer before you leave the US

After 1 month my phone number went missing leaving my phone useless. The Google Fi tech support folks worked on it for 2 weeks trying to figure it out and instead blame my original phone carrier. Very frustrated to lose my phone # of 10 years.

With existing phone plan, there is no need to change to this SIM card and It says speeds slower after 22GB on the package.

Purchased but could not activate. Google helpline which is suppose d to be 24/7 is not working. This is why google will always be a second tier hardware/phone provider.
