Not a big improvement over the last gen model. The UI is still sluggish, especially compared to an Apple TV. Despite being larger, I also don't like the remote as much as last gen.

No Plex, Ambient Mode slideshow doesn't work right

I've been waiting months for this device to arrive, and it's a major let down. First thing I do is uninstall ALL streaming apps. Thankfully it allows you to do that. It comes with a bunch pre installed. Next I try to install Plex and... There's no Plex available. You can search in the app store but it's not there. Evidently Plex isn't supported on this device? Wow might be the only media device on the planet without Plex support. Next I try to set up the advertised Ambient Mode so that I can show my curated Google Photos album of my photography work on my giant 4K OLED TV. Note that my other Google Home devices like the Hub already have this feature but the screens on those all are awful so it ruins my photos. I've been looking forward to a device with Google Photos Album Slideshows that I can run on my TV for YEARS. Well guess what, it doesn't work! There's at least three different menus they give you to try to get you to set up Google Photos Ambient Mode and NONE of them show my personal Photography album! The same album in use on my other Google Home devices. It just isn't there! I counted to do a sanity check, I have 16 albums in my Google Photos account and all the menus for Ambient Mode both in the TV Streamer device and in the phone Home app only show like 8-10 of your albums. Conveniently missing my single album I wanted to display. There's endless prompts for it to made it's own dynamically generated album from your phone photos, but that's worthless. I'm a photographer with real photos to display and this device simply cannot display them it seems. I'm honestly speechless. The only two things I needed from this simple device, Plex and my personal photography album, it can't do. This device is literally useless. I don't care enough to return it I'll probably just toss it in the trash. I'm gonna have to hook up my original 2015 model Nvidia Shield TV and use that for the next ten years. Yikes. What a disappointment.

Thank you for taking time to share your experience with Google TV Streamer (4K).

Google TV Streamer (4K) is designed to work with the Plex app. Navigating to the "Apps" tab and searching for Plex should surface the result. Sometimes, searching for the full Plex app name "Plex: Stream Movies & TV" can also help but if that still doesn't work, our customer support team is standing by and can take a closer look.

Ambient screensaver will work on this device. We'd love to better understand and help you navigate the problems you're running into with Ambient screensaver. Please contact us at https://g.co/nest/contact so we can assist. madebygoogle

What was missing from Chromecast for home setup

The Google home streamer is the perfect replacement for Chromecast and for any smart TV processor in my opinion. it provides the best of all worlds at a very affordable price for something that will last for years. Pros: - very minimalist look and solid build quality that will mesh seamlessly with any decor or setup. - You can hide it behind the TV with some velcro if you want. - Bigger storage and faster processor than original Chromecast and any smart TV! - Continuous, direct updates from Google who is very good about security patches. you don't have this level of support from smart TV vendors who will have outdated looks 2 years after a TV was purchased. - The ability to have all the apps you want, thanks to Android. so you are not stuck to the smart TV approved apps. - did I mention 32Gigs of storage? this wont run sluggish after a while. - Google assistant with all its Glory, voice commands controls, remote locator. - very nice remote. I preferred the one from chromecast but I understand they needed to stick more things in this one. - The ability to easily pair headsets for private listening is AMAZING. using Bluetooth you can pair any set of bluetooth headsets of any kind as long as it has bluetooth for private listening if you have someone who fell asleep on the couch (Ahem, my wife!). - and the most amazing feature that I have been waiting for is the ability to control Google Home from the TV. this is an amazing feature that is under rated, forget about controlling nest from your TV. how about controlling your security cameras from your own tv! the door bell rings, the camera feed shows up on your TV. in addition to being able to control you Google home connected devices like lights, etc. That was the most important feature that I liked. now I can take my google home hub upstairs to the office and its no longer needed in the living room. - Ethernet port for faster connection. Now the Cons: - no HDMI cable included in the box. - No audio passthrough. those are the only 2 issues I have and they are not deal breakers to be honest. In my opinion this is a worthy device that I will be using for years to come.

Completely overpriced. Terrible customer service support. I wouldn’t recommend this product to anyone because the remote is just too tiny to use. It’s ok but the storage capacity is terrible it should be at least 64 or 128 GB of storage space not 32 GB. For the amount of money google id asking for it lacks both storage space and the remote control is so small the remote control needs to made bigger especially if you have big hands.

No better than built in smart tv functions, and I have a 5 year old Samsung. Searches do nothing other than refer you to YouTube videos, recently watched works occasionally, recommendations are only made for Google services and Netflix, request to play music from a real Google assistant device to the Streamer launch some music streaming thing instead of Spotify or Pandora.

I was very excited to replace my aging NVidia Shield Pro with this new device. However, after hours of testing, wiring, rewiring, resetting, etc. I came to the conclusion that it doesn't want to work with certain surround sound formats. E.g. I would play a movie on the Fandango at Home app on my Shield with full Dolby Digital, turn everything off, unplug it and connect the Google TV Streamer to the same HDMI cable, turn everything on and when I start the same movie in the same app I get PCM on my AV receiver. I finally went online and found multiple posts, both on the Google support site and Reddit forums where people came to the same conclusion. Even the specs comparison on Google show the previous Chromecast device has "Dolby-encoded audio (HDMI passthrough)" but the streamer has "Dolby Atmos" which basically means it does not have HDMI passthrough. I am returning this ... can't go back to watching Interstellar and Dune in stereo!

As with any new device, there are a few problems with the Goggle Streamer. It likes to lock up on start up and had lost wi-fi connection twice. I purchased this item two weeks ago and I am ready for a upgrade already. lol I would not recommend this item to someone who is not comfortable with rebooting and wi-fi connection issues. I love the menu and other items on the streamer. I would have thought Goggle would have done a better job before dumping it on the market for us to fix.

Hello JohnH! Sorry to hear about the hard time you've been having with your Google TV Streamer (4K). Here are some steps you can try to improve your Wi-Fi connection:

Check if the streamer is too far from your router or modem and see if other devices connect successfully.
Make sure you’re not using a Wi-Fi hotspot.
If you're on home Wi-Fi, try connecting directly to your router.

Google's latest streaming device, the Google TV Streamer (4K), offers a significant upgrade for $99. It boasts a sleek, compact design and a noticeable performance boost over its predecessor, thanks to increased memory and storage. It delivers a smooth user experience with an intuitive interface, a redesigned remote, and support for 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos. Ethernet connectivity ensures reliable streaming, and its deep integration with Google Home, including Matter and Thread support, makes it a powerful smart home hub. The Google TV Streamer (4K) is a compelling choice for those seeking a premium streaming experience with enhanced performance and smart home capabilities. The design itself is sleek and will fit most every home or room design. The remote is not overly complex, and also allows you to setup a favorites button for an app you use the most (if you so choose). Overall, I will be making this my everyday streaming device due to its performance and overall easy of use. Love this thing!
