    Great little action camera

I'll have to start this off by saying, I've never owned an action camera though I've always wanted one so while I have owned digital cameras of many kinds over the years, one like this was new to me. Packaging: To start, packaging was straightforward, a long narrow box with the GoPro in it and a charging cable and some literature. Nothing excessive here. Setup and use: Being that I'm new to action cameras I do know there are more expensive models with front screens (why?) and more features than this one. But honestly I feel like unless you just need those features. To me being small and light and easy to use while still being 4k capable with multiple aspect ratios and speeds is all I can imagine needing. It doesn't have a replaceable battery so if that's important to you and you do that much recording that may be the tipping point for you, but since I'm new to this I haven't needed to replace the battery. Speaking of resolutions: 4K30, 1080p30 video, and 2.7K60 and 1080p60 at slo-mo, as well as 12 megapixel pictures or 8 megapixel pictures from video. Again, unless it's just not covering what you need, this is more than enough for most people. One thing I found strange was that the image stabilization is not hardware based on this device. It is applied via software through the app, but it works well so no real concerns. Bottom line: If you're new to the action camera scene or you're looking for something affordable that covers 90% of the things the top end cameras do without the cost, I feel like this is the one to get. I'm sure I'll get loads of use out of it.

The quick start guides you through downloading the Quik app and going through the setup and camera update. I had a slight scare in that I accidentally powered off the Hero while the app was trying to connect to it. It put it into a state where both front and back status lights were solid red, and device would not respond to anything. Holding down the power button for a really long time, which felt like 20 seconds, powered it off and then I was able to power back on and continue with setup. You can do quite a bit with the Quik app including change settings, monitor and control recording, manage media and more. It establishes a Wi-Fi connection from your mobile device to the Hero and then automatically switches back to whatever Wi-Fi connection you were using after closing the app. The included mounting options are limited to the buckle and adhesive mount. You’ll have to purchase extra mounting accessories if you want more options. The Hero is the little brother to the Hero13 and you give up a removable battery and front LCD screen and some advance video controls but you gain a much smaller and lighter unit plus quite less expensive. If you don’t need the extra features the base Hero is a great deal, and I also find the door latch much easier to open than on the larger model. I say this for a number of consumer electronics that include the charging cable with USB-C on both ends that it would be better to have USB-A on the other end because most charging adapters people have laying around are going to have an A vs C connector. There are some basic voice control commands that you can use if you enable the feature from the menu. You can start and stop recording, take a photo and turn off. These can be handy when mounted somewhere not easy to reach like a helmet. The on-screen controls are easy to use and haven’t changed much from older GoPros that I have used. A quick swipe up gets you to the recordings and then left and right to go through them. If you are connected with the app from your mobile device its easier to scan through them in a gallery view. You can also easily edit and share them from the app.

Very torn about this particular entry by GoPro. I’ve wanted a smaller GoPro that was less obtrusive for a long time, and obviously being realistic, knew the shrinking case would result in necessary performance reductions. If you’ve used GoPro Hero cameras before and are used to the onboard options, then it may be hard to overlook the pretty dramatic downturn. If you’re new to action cameras or GoPro in general and are trying to decide if you want to jump in, this would definitely be an excellent way to test out the waters. First off, the casing is about a third smaller than the typical Hero cameras, which doesn’t sound like much, but if you’re attaching it to your helmet then it is noticeable. The downsizing also means you lose the second screen, which isn’t a big deal in real life use. The biggest limitation in my opinion which will make or break whether this camera works for you is the battery. The battery is now sealed, meaning you can’t just pop in a new one when your charge dies. The battery lasts up to 1 hour, but if you’re shooting full 4K won’t last as long. So if the shortened battery life is ok and you just need a simple, straightforward, action camera, this is a great way to test out action cameras without a huge investment. If those factors are not ok, then you’ll need to save up another couple hundred to get the 13 (which has some great new features - but that’s for a different review)

This model GoPro camera is very small and lightweight. It has an extremely solid feel. It comes with the attachments to set it up for example, on a bicycle helmet. I did not need other accessories or carry-methods, so this worked fine for me. Your first step will be to download the GoPro Quik app to get the camera set up. Your next step is to put the included micro-SD card into the camera and ensure it is fully charged. The setup will also include a step of updating the camera’s firmware. Everything is automatic as the app will guide you to complete your quick-start to begin using your new GoPro camera. The quick-start process is very well done – tip of the cap to the GoPro engineers. The LCD screen is fantastic, very clear and colorful. I did examine the camera to get a feel for its ability to handle some bumps for example when you ride a bicycle. I gave it some testing over very rough off-road terrain and the camera handled the trails with no ill effects. This camera has the ability to correct jumpy videos with an automatic stabilization process that works really well, indeed it works like magic and it calms the video down. Tip of the cap to the GoPro engineers for this great design point. I highly recommend this well designed and solidly built little marvel.
