    Great Camera, Lousy Carry Case

I've been a videographer since the late '70s, starting out with a 2 piece camera/portapack that weighed a ton. Years later they came out with a much smaller porta pack but it still recorded on VHS tape. Then came the full sized VHS Camcorder and then in the early '90s I bought the first digital camera which was fairly small and that shot on Mini-DV tape. Many years later I bought my first GoPro camera and was amazed by its size and quality. As good as the GoPro Hero 8 Black was, this GoPro Hero 11 Black Creator edition has so many more features that it makes the older one look primitive. Being able to shoot 5.3K60 and 4K120 video with Hypersmooth video, I no longer need to use a gimbal. At my age, I don't do action sports, I just do street and event videography and can finally create videos I am really proud of. When I look back at the VHS wedding videos I shot, I'm really embarrassed at the VHS quality of it. I will be shooting a Bar Mitzvah with it tomorrow and I know I will be proud of it. The Volta grip is a great addition to the GoPro since it contains a battery that with the internal camera battery will give roughly 4 hours of continuous power without having to carry extra batteries and a charger with me. It has the controls to start and stop the shooting so I don't have to reach up and press the shutter button and even though I can start and stop (among other commands) using the voice commands, in some situations I wouldn't want to speak out loud to tell it to stop recording). There is also a mode button to switch between video, photo, time lapse and light painting. Speaking of modes, using the rear screen controls, you can select modes such as Activity, Cinematic, Full Frame, Ultra Slo Mo, Star Trails, Time Warp, Vehicle Lights and Night Lapse. The Volta hand grip opens up to form a mini tripod and on the front of the Volta, there is a pop-out standard GoPro mount that you can attach any kind of accessory. For doing video blogging the creator edition comes with a metal housing that will protect the camera in the event of a fall as well as an additional microphone with a windsock to give you clear crisp audio even under the worst conditions. The tiny LED light sits in the cold shoe on top and is extremely bright for something that small. My one major complaint is the carry case that the GoPro 11 came with is one big empty box. The partitions that the parts came in is made of cardboard and it falls apart if you try to put everything back into it to take it on the road. I have cases for other cameras that have plastic covered cloth that keeps all the parts in place so they don't bounce around when carrying it. Of course I can always buy a different case but they should have thought it out a little better. All in all, I am amazed at the quality of the video and after all, that is the most important thing when buying a video camera.

The design of the camera is excellent. It feels durable and well built. I really appreciate that the lens glass is replaceable in case it were to break. It’s waterproof up to 33 feet. I love the front screen; it’s great for taking selfies and to help people see where they are in the photo. The photo quality for this model is great. My test images came out very clear with its 27 megapixel sensor. I thought it produced a picture and I really like the tone of GoPro photos. The video quality is amazing with the 5.3k resolution. Hypersmooth 5.0 is very impressive. It made my footage with a lot of movement appear to be hardly moving at all. I can see this being very useful for extreme sports or really anything with moving footage. The new horizon lock feature is super nice too. The user interface of this device is excellent. Once you familiarize yourself with the controls it becomes very intuitive to use. The modes and settings offered a lot of options to get a very customizable experience based on your shooting priorities. It is super simple to use your phone in conjunction with your GoPro. It consists of downloading an app and pairing the two devices. Transferring content from the GoPro to the phone was super fast. The app also allows you to live stream using the GoPro on popular websites including Youtube, Twitch, and Facebook. The microphone mod works really well. It is very compact yet still provides considerably better sound that the onboard microphone offers. The light mod was also compact, bright, has a few different modes, and is individually rechargeable. My favorite accessory in this bundle was the Volta grip. It is the perfect GoPro accessory. It has a battery in the grip to keep the gopro going. It has a built-in tripod. It has built in controls which can be used wired or wirelessly. It also has tripod threads if you wanted to use this in conjunction with a full size tripod. Overall, i thought that this was a really great camera with a lot of great accessories included in this bundle.

    Super Convenient Action Camera

The GoPro HERO11 is my first experience with the GoPro platform. I really appreciated the carrying case and all of the accessories that came with the Hero11. Probably my favorite part about this whole setup is the battery grip, which not only adds extended battery life, but control buttons that are easy to use and it doubles as a tripod! I like that it has the option to mount to other camera equipment with the built in mount on the bottom if you need to use a larger tripod, a boom stick or anything else that uses a universal camera mount. Everything in this kit uses USB-C ports and it just makes it so convenient to charge everything. The GoPro itself is a nice high quality little device, that provides stunning wide angle shots and footage. The image stabilization is really good. And with the size of the video it makes it easy to crop down without worrying about losing any fidelity. If you want to you can take still images from the video and get a really good sized crisp image. I like the secondary screen on the front so when filming in front of the camera I can make sure I'm still in frame. The UI is fairly simple to use, and when paired with the GoPro Quik app I can change all the settings just using my phone which is super cool. In all I am pretty amazed by how much this little thing can do, and would definitely recommend the HERO11 for anyone looking to upgrade or getting their first action camera.

GoPro has long been known as the defacto action camera for extreme sports athletes and the GoPro HERO11 Black Creator Edition continues to deliver. Within the GoPro HERO11 Black Creator Edition you'll find the HERO11 Black camera, Volta Hand Grip, Light Mod, Media Pod and an Enduro Battery. The HERO11 Black camera builds on the success of earlier GoPro cameras brining 5.3K video at 60 frames per second or 4K video at 120 frames per second. Video stabilization has been greatly improved with the addition of HyperSmooth 5.0 stabilization and so your video will be nice and smooth regardless of how crazy the downhill ride was on your last mountain bike trail. One feature I especially appreciate as a pilot is the Built-in Horizon Lock that ensures the horizon will remain level even as the camera tilts or rotates during the recording. The extended battery allows you to capture four hours of 4K video at 30 frames per second. This camera will definitely be joining me on my upcoming adventures, whether I'm flying or swimming off the coast of Kauai.

Great package for content creators - and everyone!

GoPro has done it again - every time you think that they've gone and created the perfect action camera, they find a way to one-up themselves. I've recently upgraded to this HERO11 package from my old HERO8 (which I've loved over the years) and it's a much bigger improvement than you'd think! The color front screen - added from the 9 series on is the biggest improvement - but the Enduro batteries really change the battery life paradigm and the added resolution makes a big difference EVEN if you don't intend to have a finished video on 4K (though, why wouldn't you?). Having a higher resolution / more capable sensor allows the SuperView / image stabilization to work far better than on my older 8 series and significantly better than on the 9 or 10 as well. And, really, isn't that what you want from an action camera? Higher framerates and the new "easy" mode (which really does act like an easy button for great footage) also improve the video experience and make for faster (and easier) editing in post-production. For content creators, this creator edition package really shines - you get everything you need in one nice carrying case. The camera of course, but a whole bevy of accessories that improve the experience. You get the absolutely essential Media Mod which I've had in prior flavors and includes a vastly better microphone (plus the ability to connect an external mic for even better sound, always a GoPro weak point out of the box), an output for a monitor to view footage on a bigger screen as you're shooting (big for creators so you know what you're getting) and the ability to charge while you go. Plus two cold shoes! One of those will be occupied by the rechargeable Light Mod that also comes in the package (the other likely by an external microphone) - the Light Mod is adjustable, BRIGHT and long-lived on battery, in other words, everything you want from a light for shooting action footage. Also included in the package is the Volta grip which is not only a handy grip, but also a tripod, remote control (via Bluetooth) and a battery that can charge the GoPro on the go to vastly extend battery life. You can use this with or without the Media Mod (the package also includes the USB passthrough door which you can use to charge while on the go without leaving the battery exposed, a big plus). All in all, it's a great package of items for content creators or ANYONE looking to take great videos. One thing that doesn't come in the package is a MicroSD card and I HIGHLY recommend a V30 capable card for best performance at the high resolutions and high framerates. In fact, the camera will warn you if you don't put in such a card. Add the card, charge the batteries and you're off! I can highly recommend the GoPro HERO11 for action cam fans, content creators or anything looking to take great videos on the go.

    Awesome On-the-Go Vlogging Setup

GoPro thought about almost everything with their GoPro creator series. A GoPro 11 Black ruggedized camera that can operate in the roughest conditions while also giving you the quality video of a non-waterproof, non-ruggedized vlogging camera. Camera basics: The camera is noticeably heavier than previous editions of the Black. Compared to my Black 7 and Black 6 editions, it just felt sturdier. Full HD up to 5.3K, though most of us will continue shooting in 4K. Up to 120 FPS in 4K, which makes for butter-smooth slow motion when edited in post (without having to use a built-in slo-mo mode, though the camera does have an option to shoot directly in slo-mo if you don’t want to bother with post editing). Stills are shot at an impressive (for an active cam) 24mp, and the same quality can be still grabbed from a video using their app. Stabilization is incredible, and seems to get better every generation of camera GoPro releases. Levels of stabilization are adjustable, as well as a mode for “AutoBoost” where the camera will adjust levels of stabilization as needed. It also now features a horizon lock if you’re doing aerial shots with this, but seems a feature that will be used by relatively few. The “Media Mod” takes this camera from a standard action cam to a full production-quality camera. This gives you the ability to add on up to 2 “hot shoe” accessories (NOTE: This is NOT the same size as a standard camera hot shoe, so while it does give you options, it’s not fully compatible with flashes or external mics you might use with a larger DSLR). The Mod unit gives you expansion with a passthrough USB-C (charging), Micro HDMI (larger attachable video screen), and a standard 3.5” mic port (adding a mic or a lavalier setup). The mod also adds its own directional mic (the user can control the mic priority – front or back, so if you’re shooting forward & live narrating from behind the camera, you can prioritize your voice from behind and not make it sound like you’re actually BEHIND the camera) with an attachable foam windscreen. This simply isn’t a vlogging camera without it. (Though you have to remove a battery door to attach it, which to me is annoying, but more of that in the “cons” section). Attachable to the Media Mod hot shoe is an included LED light. The light has 3 different brightness levels (as well as a 4th mode which flashes SOS if you get lost while out shooting with this), which are nicely diffused with the removable diffuser cover. The light works nicely on closer-in subjects or objects, but know the thing measures maybe 2” across, so it’s not going to light a wide area for wider shots. The camera also includes the Volta shooting handle for mounting, holding, and controlling the camera, which also can recharge the battery (though not while shooting, see “cons” below). The handle connects to the media mod with a curled USB-C cable for powering the camera, but controls the camera via Bluetooth. You can essentially start/stop recording or take stills and change modes with the handle. The handle also includes a tripod for setting the whole rig down for recording, though it’s short, so you’ll need something to sit it on if you’re recording anything taller than the ground. The base of the handle includes a standard thread for further mounting to a tripod or desk mount if you’re using this as a table-based video camera (ex., for streaming). Because of the high quality and framerate of the camera, make sure you check GoPro’s website for supported SD cards. It’s critical you get the highest speed microSD you can buy. I purchased a 64Gb card and it lasts all day recording, so you don’t have to go overboard with capacity. Speed is key here. I love the case that the whole unit comes with, a semi-hard sided zipper case with a nice cardboard inner system that everything comes from GoPro in. Being cardboard though is one of the disappointments – I would have loved to see this come as a plastic inner organization system so it was able to be used in perpetuity. If you’re careful with the cardboard, it may last long enough for you, but getting things out of it on a routine basis will likely tear the cardboard at some point. I’ve since remounted everything in a ruggedized Pelican case, but the included case is nice & compact to carry in a backpack. The Cons: Battery life continues to be an issue, despite the Enduro batteries that have a higher capacity. I was getting less than 30 minutes of recording time in. Moreover, you cannot charge the battery with the Media Mod while the camera is recording. So while you can get (advertised) up to 4 hours of battery life with the included Volta handle, it doesn’t do any good if it can’t actually shoot that long without stopping to swap batteries or recharge. THE ONLY WAY AROUND THIS is to remove the battery & run with nothing but the Volta or an external power supply attached. Again, to me this makes little sense, and limits that ability to move from “plugged in” to “portable on battery”. We’re clearly able to charge pretty much everything else in the world while using the device (your phone comes to mind), so not sure why GoPro continues to limit this. (Note that battery life is heavily based on the video quality & framerate you’re shooting and whether you’re using the front and/or back displays. I recommend turning off the forward-facing “selfie” screen if you don’t need it to help save battery). I would have also liked, on a package this expensive, for GoPro to have included more than 1 battery and perhaps their available battery charging bay. There’s no one out there The mic sensitivity isn’t the greatest. Again, recording in close is fine, but recording anything more than say 6 or 8 feet ahead tends to lose audio quality. I suggest use of a lav mic if you’re recording anything more than arm’s length from the camera. To attach the Media Mod, you have to fully remove the battery door (though the Mod does a good job of resealing the door). If you’re planning on going back & forth between using the Mod and not, you’ll find yourself having to remove or re-attach the door constantly. Since the door is only connected with a couple of very small teeth, this is a high-probability item to break. (Note that it does come with one replacement door, though it is a door with a passthrough opening for the USB-C port). Zooming isn’t as easy when using this out & about as my other “dedicated vlogging” camera that is essentially a full mirrorless DSLR with a pop-out 24-70mm zoom lens. Expect to essentially stay in a single frame while shooting, and if you want to zoom you’ll have to work on that in post. Also, the way to switch modes (video/photo/slo-mo, etc.) is to swipe left or right on the rear display (you can also single press the mode button on the side). The touch screen is very sensitive, so it’s easy to accidentally (and annoyingly) switch modes while trying to access options on the camera or just brushing up against it. Summary: While there are certainly a couple of cons, they don’t take away from the amazing quality and versatility of this camera. This has replaced my usual go-to “on-the-go” vlogging camera solely because I’m no longer worried about it getting wet or dropping and damaging it. I love the ability to easily add on accessories like a lav mic without a lot of trouble. GoPro seems to check all the boxes with this camera, and I can’t recommend it enough.

Awesome addition to your camera phone for trips

As someone who's had a full DSLR with crazy lenses most my adult life, it's been interesting as I've realized that carrying around a bag with lenses has become less and less attractive as time moves along. I think most of this is centered around the idea that camera phones are becoming a better secondary device for photos and video BUT it's still a little off-putting to pull out what could be a $1000+ smart phone to video a bird flying by as you're on a jet ski. That said, this go pro is svelte enough to come along on the ride and it serves a few functions that make the combo more palatable for the price. First I'm just going to say the creator's bundle is pretty awesome. The ability to have a tripod, light, and external mic all inside a quick portable case was perfect for my use. With all of the special settings that are available on the camera, I'd already imagined myself quickly wanting a few accessories and this set scratched that itch. The light trail setting was the first thing I tested and it really is enjoyable. Image stabilization was another feature I was quick to test and it's amazing how well it smooths out what should be noticeably bumpy videography. Overall quality is outstanding, my next test is to try it out as a webcam because if it works well for that I'll feel like I've really got a good investment in terms of replacing a bunch of different systems with one that I can just grab and go. In regards to the above, I'm much more comfortable attaching a floating key ring to the go pro and potentially dropping that versus my phone. It allows me to take more risks but also just pull it out without a second thought and capture moments I might not have otherwise grabbed. Coming from an older GoPro back when we used to attach them to drones this was a monumental upgrade and it's definitely a worthwhile purchase on my part.
