The GoPro Hero 12 Black is the latest and greatest action camera from GoPro, and it's a significant upgrade over the previous generation. It features a new GP2 processor that allows for higher resolution and frame rate video recording, as well as improved image quality and stabilization. The Hero 12 also has a new front-facing display, making it easier to frame your shots and vlo For easy editing and quick social posting this unit is by far the best on the market. It is super easy to setup, upload, edit and produce!! The form factor is ultimately such an important part of the ease of use. The accessories that are available are almost unlimited, I was amazed at how many diffent styles of mounts one can purchase for this, like one for your dog, the fetch dog harness. The clarity of this unit is impecable, along with it's verstality in it's on board functions. Being able to record in portrait without having to rotate the camera is perfect! I would recommend this to any one looking for a great recording tool, for action or any of type of creative work.

I think it would be a fair statement to say that anyone who does any kind of outdoor photo/video shooting has heard of GoPro. Every other brand out there is compared to the GoPro, and for good reason. It really does set the standard. And a new standard has been set with the GoPro Hero12 Black. Out of the box, I was pleased to see there were no complicated controls to muddle through. The overall design is quite simple and minimalist. It is obvious the engineering team for GoPro are folks who actually use the cameras they design out in the field. The last thing anyone wants is a camera for action shooting that requires a lot of valuable time and effort to use. The camera shell is black, with blue speckling. This rather puzzled me as to why they chose to do this. Not that it is a bad thing, but kind of out of sync, in my opinion. There is the front screen, lens and rear screen, and top and side buttons. Again, just a very pleasingly simple design. To start the setup, you must first have a microSD card. It is absolutely necessary to use the recommended memory card. In my failure to do so, I was unable to set up the GoPro. After pulling all my hair out, I had to go back to the very beginning and walk through all the steps one more time. It was then it dawned on me that I had not checked the SD card to make sure it was compatible. It was not. After inserting the correct recommended card, the set up was a breeze. Funny thing these set up instructions... One of the necessities for setup is the GoPro Quik app. This made the actual setup simple and easy. Plus the app allows for basic editing. After the setup was complete, it was time to see what the GoPro Hero12 was capable of doing. Being new to the later generation of GoPro experience, I took the time to watch several videos, and went through the user manual. I'm glad I did. I learned a lot of neat stuff that I would have missed otherwise. I would highly recommend even experienced users to do the same to acquaint themselves with all the great features available. This is not the same camera as the earlier generations...it is light-years ahead! Although the GoPro can take still photos, its strength lies in its video capabilities. There is no way to adequately describe just how stunning the GoPro videos were that I took. The image stabilization feature is worth the price alone! I was completely awe-struck. I wish there was a way to upload a video just so you could witness it for yourself. But not just the image stabilization, the stunning quality of the videos. The colors, the clarity, and the field of view...they all combine to produce videos I am proud to show off. I went for a ride on the mountain bike, and I was worried about all the bouncing around and also about the constant transitioning from shade to direct sunlight. Flawless! The video was like something you see on TV. I know this is not a "technical" review for the GoPro, but the bottom line of any product does not lie in anything but results. The GoPro delivers. Photos are great, videos are (again) stunning, and the ease of use - that is, the ability to make adjustments on the fly - is amazing. If you have been riding the fence on whether to upgrade your GoPro, or perhaps venture into it for the first time, just take the plunge. This is the action camera you want, and need, if you are looking for results you will be proud to show off. I suppose a review wouldn't be complete if I didn't include those things I feel could use some improvement. As with any camera, the higher the demand placed on it the more battery life suffers. With max image stabilization at the highest resolution, battery life suffers a bit with the GoPro. But this is normal, and is not a short-coming on GoPro's part. Its just the way it is...with any product. The outstanding waterproof capability of the GoPro makes retrieving the SD card a tad difficult, but this is a small price to pay. Again, if you are on the fence, jump off and get the GoPro Hero12 Black.

    Excellent - Exceeds My Expectations

I am reviewing the GoPro Hero 12 Black from the perspective of someone who has had various cameras over the years: film SLR, DSLR, Mirrorless, Advanced Point and Shoot, and the DJI Osmo Pocket 2. The Hero 12 is my first action-style camera. I have no plans to use it for “action”. I will use it for video while standing or walking. I can best compare the Hero 12 to my DJI Pocket 2 since both are much smaller than other cameras I have used. One drawback of the Pocket 2 for me is the tiny screen. It is hard to see what is in frame and whether the exposure is correct. I have had occasions where I did not notice the lens was pointing down when I wanted it pointing straight ahead. Only when I reviewed the footage on the computer did I notice that I got good footage of my feet. I have also shot overexposed video that I only discovered upon reviewing it on the computer. The tiny Pocket 2 screen is just too small to notice over-exposure unless it is extreme. The Hero 12 screen is large enough to easily see what is in-frame, and to check the exposure. In addition, the larger touch screen on the Hero 12 makes navigating the menus much easier. The menu system is well designed. The video footage from the Hero 12 is really good. I say this from a background of having used cameras with much larger sensors. I don’t know how GoPro gets such good video from a relatively small sensor. The video stabilization is excellent. I would say just as good as with a mechanical gimble, although I have not tested it in low light, where many reviews say the GoPro stabilization struggles. I appreciate that the Hero 12 allows for setting many different “Pro” parameters such as minimum and maximum ISO, EV compensation, etc. Given the level of control the user is given, the excellent video footage, and the gimbal-like video stabilization, I probably will no longer carry my larger, heavier cameras on vacations. The GoPro will be very sufficient for my needs. I see that the ¼”-20 tripod mount is new to the Hero this year. The lack of a ¼”-20 mounting point is one reason I haven’t tried GoPros in the past. I didn’t want to bother with that thumb screw. The thumb screw system is probably good for mounting accessories used for action, like skiing, running, etc. I don’t need such accessories. The tripod mount is all I need, so I am very happy to see it added in the Hero 12. A couple negatives: 1. The battery compartment door is REALLY hard to open. 2. The On/Off/Mode button on the side takes quite a bit of force to push in. It is flush with the body so I don’t feel much travel when pushing it. I am not sure if this is by design or if it is just a problem with my particular instance of the camera. It still works fine though. Overall, I am pleasantly surprised by the GoPro Hero 12 Black, my first GoPro camera.

Years ago I purchased my first GoPro and was not entirely happy with it because it was finicky and didn't always work. Warp ahead to now and, ironically enough, from the moment I took it out of the box there was an issue. The camera would not allow me to activate it (which had to be done through a smartphone application). I had to actually download an update file, put that onto the SD card, and the update the camera from there. Once that was done, however, things worked much more seamlessly as far as the setup was concerned. Ironically enough, though, when I inserted my SD card, the camera gave me an error message stating the card is not fast enough, despite the fact the card is a U3 card (which is the rating GoPro states is needed in the camera). Beyond those issues, the camera does have some really nice features in this iteration. There is a front screen, which makes it easier to see what is being recorded if, say, you are using the camera to record yourself for a podcast or something. The rear screen is a touch screen, so no need to try and navigate menus or activate features by figuring out the sequencing of pushing various buttons. The camera is built with a rugged case that is waterproof down to 10 meters that also has build-in "folding fingers" that allow the camera to be mounted to various accessories without having to attach a separate bracket (although, this also means switching mounts is not quick as swapping mounts means unscrewing the first mount from the camera, replacing that mount with the desired one, and then securing the camera to the new mount by screwing it in again). There are numerous recording options from 1080P and 2.7K to 4K and 5.3K. There are also a few recording options, such as vehicle light trails, light painting, star trails, and slow motion, which are pretty slick. Battery life is supposed to be just over an hour at the highest resolution setting (but I have not tested that out). The camera also is designed to interface with their Quik application that provides the option of uploading automatically to the cloud (for an additional monthly fee, of course). The camera supports accessories such as a light, a directional mic, or a lens modification. It is even bluetooth capable so a bluetooth microphone (like earbuds) can be used to record audio with your video (again, a nice thing to have for podcasts). Simply stated there are more features on this camera than I will probably ever use. There are obviously less expensive options available when shopping for action cameras, but the GoPro is definitely feature rich and built for its intended purpose. GIven some of the challenges I had with the setup, I cannot rate it at 5 stars, but the camera is a solid 4-stars+ in my book.

TLDR - The GoPro Hero12 Black takes such amazing videos, at any settings, but its the settings/tweaks that really makes the Hero12 Black a top option for any action camera needs. The fact that a camera with a sensor this small, (1/1.9") can take videos that look as amazing as this, is just bonkers. You can also turn on hypersmooth, and no matter how choppy you're bumping around on a bike, scooter, car, or whatever, it looks like the unit is mounted to a super high end gimbal system. You also have the ability to run cool 8:7 videos at 5.3K at 30fps, if you're running 5.3K at 16:9, you can run 60fps. You can also turn on HDR and still record 5.3K30 16:9, or 4K60 at 16:9. Theres also options to get slow-mo up to 240fps at 2.7K, or 120fps at 4k! On top of an amazing list of video options, you can also go up to 33ft underwater without any extra hardware, and now the mount system is foldable/built in and metal. I attached the unit to my electric scooter, and was AMAZED with how smooth it was, I also got a chest mount that goes small enough for my toddler to wear, some fun angles with that for sure. Overall, you cannot go wrong with the Hero12, for fun, or pro, it'll blow you away!

Works exactly as advertised. Very easy to use. Will definitely be investing in the zoom lens though to give it a little more functionality. Only complaint is the subscription software is clunky. From the slow editing to it not making the auto highlight videos as stated, it's just not worth the price. Great camera though!

I love the redesignof the UI. Honestly it was much needed because with the hero 11, you had to change the bitrate and bitdepth in every single video profile. The 1/4 20 mount is so nice to have. The only thing I don't like about the Hero 12 is that it doesn't come with the case unlike the Hero 11, 10, and 9
