Customers highly value the HERO7 Black 4K Waterproof Action Camera's impressive video and image quality, ease of use, and effective stabilization. Many appreciate its waterproof design and convenient size. However, some users point to shortcomings in battery life and occasional overheating issues. A few also mention that the zoom and low-light performance could be improved.

GoPro sets the bar once again for action cams

Once again the folks at GoPro have continued to push the limit and set the bar for compact action cameras. Although there isn't much change you can see on paper compared to previous models, you can clearly see noticeable change on videos due to the image stability software they have in the new GoPro Hero 7. The video is so smooth it's almost surreal and looks like it was shot by a professional photographer. Like most GoPro Hero models, the touchscreen is fairly simple to maneuver and responsive to touch. There are many options you can choose from for recording and capturing images including video quality, frame rate, low light, etc. It's great that you no longer need a waterproof housing to take a dip and record some sweet snorkeling pics and having a photo timer and time lapse option are also added benefits to play with. Another great thing about them not changing the physical camera too dramatically over the past two models is most, if not all, of the old accessories still work with this model since it is the same size including the housing and mounting accessories and the GoPro Karma grip. It was very easy and fast to sync this with my GoPro account and app in order to view, upload and edit content, view live feed and use the new live streaming option. The camera and all of it's abilities make me feel like I should be twenty years younger and become a stunt man... and then reality sets in that I'm just a boring husband and father that uses it to capture amazing family moments without risking my life. In any case, you won't find a better action camera on the market with so many fun things to use it for and I highly recommend it to any real dare devils so I can live vicariously through them when watching the GoPro channel.

Coming from a cheap action camera, this is INSANE!

I have experience with an $80 4K action cam, so this camera blew me away.
TLDR: Buy this. The quality is amazing & live streaming is pretty cool!
Long-winded review;
Let’s get right to it.
Pros:
Insane Quality
Tons of GoPro and 3rd party accessory available
YouTube Videos to help you get great videos, tune for cinematography, etc.
Video stabilization
Cons:
No more GoPro studio - replaced with Quik, which isn’t good. It just isn’t.
Things I’ve noticed:
It goes through battery pretty quickly, so you absolutely need 2 batteries at a minimum
It gets warm even at 1080p; 4k -- it’s good to double as a hand warmer, come winter
Issues (Firmware 1.0) - I used this version for over a week:
Occasional Freeze-ups (with an SD card NOT on the list (MB-ME64GA/AM) and with one ON the list / SDSQXNE-064G-AN6MA).
Strange symptoms of …
Screen staying black, but still recorded etc … needed reboots / battery pulls
Had to reset connections / reconfigure to get reliability back to Android App multiple times
Total app failure while at amusement park
NO STREAMING
Then, on roll-out day (when these started shipping) came with the 1.51 update!
There wasn’t an updated App, which I find a bit strange (and 4 days later, still no updates).
To get reliability on my phone, I needed to delete all cache/App data from phone, then remove the app
Then, I had to:
delete Bluetooth paired devices for GoPro
delete WiFi Access Points for GoPro
reset camera to factory defaults & set it up again
Reliability arrived and Live Streaming worked at that point.
But it’s a PAIN to use AND you have to have HotSpot capability on your phone (if you’re not at home), which uses data, so have an unlimited plan!
Let’s help you get a feel for “Live Streaming” while you’re out and about …
Set up your phone HotSpot & turn the HotSpot off (likely you did this before you headed out)
Connect to your Camera with the (Already Configured) GoPro App
FYI -- This turns your WiFi off & Connects to the GoPro HotSpot (WiFi with ! symbol for no Internet connectivity)
Scroll to the Set up Live Streaming button
Facebook setup (easy - need the App installed)
YouTube (needs a long custom URL)
Twitch (needs a long custom URL)
Other providers cost $$, so I didn’t try
Once you are in the setup screen, hit the drop-down for Wireless Networks and flip over to turn on your HotSpot.
Flip back over to the GoPro App and refresh the list (‘pull down’ for android) search for / attach to your phone’s HotSpot within the setup screen.
Then go Live.
If something happens to the App, you have to shut off your HotSpot & go back to the GoPro App. Eventually the Live Stream goes “Network Error” and stops … eventually.
All of my LTE HotSpot usage had very choppy video - so it seems like you’ll need some pretty stellar LTE service -- and you can’t use WiFi on your phone, when it’s a HotSpot.
If you’re home & have a decent pipe from your ISP, the live streaming is smooooooth. Repeat the steps, minus turning on the HotSpot and pick your home/friend’s SSID.
Also, since the latest update, there has been more reliability with the camera and an SD card ON the list; no more pulling the battery.
At first, this was going to be a 3-star review - with deductions due to the crummy App, instability and the inability to live stream, but now - 5 stars because it hasn’t needed a battery pull and live streaming is fixed!
P.S. did I mention there was insane quality?!

A gimbal killer?

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Takes fluid vids straight out of the box. If you’re not new to the GoPro ecosystem, the Hero 7 uses the same phone app, same mounts and even the same batteries from Hero 5 and 6. There isn’t much change or any change at all to the actual housing so all your Hero 5 and 6 accessories should work just fine. What they did change is the guts to handle the image stabilization and a few other neat features like hyperlapse.
Pros:
*Hyper smooth videos at 1080p 60fps & 4k 30fps
*Super-fast uploads to your phone
*Hyperlapse like a pro
*USB-C (welcome to the future)
Cons:
*Battery life is short (carry extras)
*Haven’t been able to get facebook Live to work
*Doesn’t come with editing software (more on this)
*Slow menu changes
I’m glad the user interface is familiar. Swipe up to look at recordings, down to change settings, etc. Its not the fastest in changing between screens/settings and can be frustrating at times. Recording at 1080p 60fps unlocks the Hyper Smooth feature. Walking around with the GoPro handheld or attached to my head yields gimbal-like-smoothness. It does this digitally so don’t expect it to totally replace actual gimbals. It reminds me of how my iPhone does image stabilization. Its not a new tech, but finally integrated into the GoPro.
One thing that I highly appreciate is the speed the GoPro can transfer files to your phone. OMG its fast. A gig of files can transfer blazingly fast. Did I mention the fast file transfer? This is very handy because I love to view and share on my phone. The new GoPro Quik app does an ok job on making fast videos but the editing is limited. It does allow quick sharing of videos with built in transitions, music, etc. The Quik software for your computer is worthless. Why did they discontinue GoPro Studios? I’m disappointed that I need 3rd party software to even put together a time lapse.
I would recommend the Hero 7 for the fluid vids and the fast wifi file transfers to your phone. But be prepared to spend some extra cash on a 3rd party video editing software to make use of your new video files.

This new Go pro camera has all you want for your adventures, which includes a 12mp camera, 4K60 video, waterproof without housing for up to 33ft, live stream, touch pad controls, 8x slo-mo, GPS, HDR, voice command and hyperSmooth( no more shaking videos). This Go pro hero 7 camera let’s you connect your camera through a mobile app for your iOS or Android. Everything is great for this camera as the previous Go pro hero cameras, the only disappointment from this camera was the livestream, if you want to share your adventure livestream to your Facebook friends or other social media, you will have to be near a WiFi or have a hotspot installed to your mobile phone in order for the livestream to be functioning. This camera doesn’t include a memory card , for best quality picures and videos, you should get the ScanDisk Extreme ,Extreme plus or ScanDisk Pixtor Advance memory card, they work great for the go pro 7. The voice command is and awesome feature to have, you can tell Go pro to take your picture or video and even tell Go pro to turn off the camera. Overall it’s a great camera, the videos looks amazing.

Quality Action Videos, Not As Good For Pictures

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
The GoPro Hero 7 has pretty good build quality, considering all the technology necessary for its functioning is fitted into such a small sized camera that is also waterproof.
I have never owned a GoPro style of action camera before, so I do not have much to compare this GoPro to, but I was surprised that the battery on the GoPro Hero 7 drains really unexpectedly fast when connected to a Smartphone. Upon doing some online research, I found that the fast draining battery happens because of the following: When the GoPro is put into the App viewing mode, the GoPro camera uses extra battery power to create a wireless signal, of which the Smartphone connects directly to the GoPro’s wireless signal, and so it is the wireless signal which drains the GoPro’s battery power to this extent. It is best to only connect to the GoPro app when necessary, and then open the app’s settings and turn off the wireless connections whenever not needed. Always remember when you have turned off the wireless connections, because if you put the GoPro Hero 7 in app connection mode with the wireless connections option turned off, the on screen display does not show any message saying that the wireless connections are turned off. I spent 20 solid minutes one time trying to connect my Smartphone to my GoPro and I had forgotten I had set the wireless connections mode to OFF.
Recording time test: I set the GoPro video settings to the following options, 4k, Wide, 30 frames per second, I was using a 64GB SanDisk micro SD card. I started the GoPro recording, and I started a stopwatch to see how long it would record for. The GoPro Hero 7 recorded at these settings for 1 hour and 21 minutes and 38 seconds. I had previously watched a video on YouTube which compared the recording time of the GoPro Hero 5 vs the GoPro Hero 6, and in that video, the GoPro Hero 5 recorded at the same settings for 1 Hour and 35 minutes, and the GoPro Hero 6 recorded at the same settings for 1 Hour and 44 minutes. Anyway, I am not sure what all changes GoPro has made to this newer GoPro Hero 7 camera, but I am guessing that the improved Video Stabilization that this GoPro Hero 7 has, might be draining a bit more battery power.
Upon starting the GoPro app, it brings up a prompt suggesting to turn on Bluetooth, and I wondered if Bluetooth was 100% necessary, since it would not really seem like it would be necessary to have WiFi and Bluetooth both turned on in order to connect a Smartphone to the GoPro. I found that it is indeed possible to connect the GoPro app to the GoPro camera, without turning on the Bluetooth on my Smartphone, so I do not know why the process of using the GoPro app suggests to turn on the Bluetooth on the Smartphone. My complaint in the GoPro app requesting to turn on the Bluetooth, is that most customers would probably not prefer to turn on both WiFi and Bluetooth, unless it is totally necessary, since both signals would use more battery power on the Smartphone.
I found that the GoPro Hero 7 takes somewhat average pictures, and the up close pictures are downright blurry, especially when the pictures are being taken indoors under low or medium lighting. Pictures taken using the GoPro Hero 7 in brighter outdoor lighting from a distance are certainly better, and I am guessing these distance pictures might be on par with what is expected from a 12 mega pixel camera.
The up close images I took outdoors with my GoPro Hero 7 were overall blurrier than I had expected. I took several up close pictures outdoors in ample sunlight, and the pictures were all blurry, I expected the blurriness I had experienced indoors to be completely caused by the dimmer indoor lighting, but it seems to be that the up close pictures taken with this camera are not in focus.
I know that cameras in general take lesser quality pictures in low lighting, so I kind of expected the pictures I snapped in my living room to be of lesser quality. The images I captured using the GoPro Hero 7 in my living room were actually under pretty decent lighting. The lights in my living room are certainly not described as low lighting, and could be described as above average for indoor lighting. I did a comparison of the pictures that I captured indoors with the GoPro Hero 7, compared to indoor pictures from my $650 Smartphone, and I found the pictures that were taken using the GoPro Hero 7, were noticeably darker and much blurrier, to the point that I was surprised how blurry some of the pictures were. The main issue seems to be that this GoPro does not seem to focus on items that are anywhere near the lens, up close pictures using the GoPro Hero 7 are essentially blur central. I had expected that the bigger lens on the GoPro Hero 7 would have been capable of capturing some great up close picture, I guess not.
The images I captured using my GoPro Hero 7 were taken using the 12 mp linear option & the Superphoto option was set to HDR Only, this seems to be the best options for the photo settings of the GoPro Hero 7.
The GoPro Hero 7 is simply optimized for capturing faster action video footage, and it is not so great at taking up close pictures, especially in low to medium indoor lighting.
The GoPro Hero 7 does come with a nice quality USB C cable that is 22 ½ inches long. It is kind of a disappointment that there is no charger included. I think that not including a charger, was not a very good customer satisfaction choice to make on GoPro’s part, after all, what customer would prefer to not have an included charger? I guess you could say that the GoPro cameras are considered kind of a premium product which also comes with a premium price, and so for there to be no charger included, that is kind of a bit of a let down. I own a substantial collection of expensive electronics, and so I know what is considered a good value at a certain price point, and I feel as if the external charger with a spare battery should have been included with the GoPro Hero 7 kit, and that would have made the selling price way more understandable. Maybe even one or two more accessories.
The GoPro Hero 7 is obviously one of the better quality action cameras, but it is lacking a bit in versatility considering that it takes blurry up close pictures. Logically it would seem like such a high quality lens would at least be able to take as good of pictures as a flagship Smartphone. Considering that the GoPro Hero 7 has a premium price for such a small camera that does not even include a charger, I would consider the GoPro Hero 7 kit to be lacking a bit in value. If someone is a hardcore outdoor action sports enthusiast, the GoPro Hero 7 would be more enticing. I am an older guy who is not as active, and I had planned on using the GoPro Hero 7 more for indoor up close photography and bit of miscellaneous videos for YouTube, so this is part of the reason why my review might seem a bit overly critical.
I did not get to test the GoPro Hero 7 for what it is best at, which is faster action videos, and I am sure it is great for this purpose, and I am sure the improved Video Stabilization will result in better action videos. You will have to read other reviews to know more about the fast action performance of the GoPro Hero 7.
I am rating the GoPro Hero 7 kit at 3.5 out of 5 stars, mainly because of the lack of value.

GoPro Hero 7 Black
Intro
I’ve had the Hero 4 and 5 Black/Session and I’ve either sold them or return them (except for the Session. I kind of like that little guy) because they didn’t perform as I expected them to with certain features. Audio was either muffled or tinny. Stabilization was my biggest complaint because it wasn’t available in 4K. Even with 2.7K where EIS was available, the video was not that smooth. Did they fix my complaints with this Hero 7 Black? Oh yes they did. Audio is so much better that there’s almost no need to find a way to use an external mic… OK maybe not that good yet but it’s a lot better that its predecessors. Video stabilization is now available in 4K. In fact, it’s available in 4k @ 60fps. Is it really good? It’s “Insanely Smooth Video” says Gopro and it is really, really good for EIS (Electronic Image Stablization). They call it HyperSmooth, gimbal like stabilization without the gimbal. It really works surprisingly good but there are features where EIS is not available like 8X slo-mo or if you shoot video in 4K 4:3. I also found that EIS still suffers in low light. This is where optical image stabilization is superior. They added a new time-lapse feature called TimeWarp video and it is stabilized. The video bit rate hasn’t changed from the Hero 6 & 5 so no 100mbps video from this camera yet and still at 12MP photos. BUT, you can turn on the camera with voice control … well, when it wants to that is. I found it to be hard of hearing at times... haha.
Other specs of this camera is almost the same as its predecessors. Other notable feature is the SuperPhoto with HDR, local tone mapping and noise reduction. I only touch on the ones that really makes this camera way different than the Hero 5 & 6 for those who are thinking of upgrading or buying the Hero 7. If you already own the Hero 5 or 6, the accessories fit and that includes the battery.
OK, so to test the HyperSmooth video, I have a YouTube video of the Hero 7 mounted on a RC car, eScooter and my SUV. Go check it out here > https://youtu.be/ZOPLfplNWv4
Pros
- Uses the same accessories as series 5 & 6 Hero including the battery
- Built-in 8GB storage
- 4K video is finally stabilized with HyperSmooth
- SuperPhoto with HDR takes awesome images.
Cons
- Still using electronic image stabilization; not optical
- Still not tripod mountable without using accessories
- Voice control is questionable
Outro
The Hero 7 Black is the best action camera that GoPro has ever put together. I still think it falls short when compared to Sony’s FDRX3000 but the Hero 7 might just get GoPro back on track.

There’s a bit of packaging to it, but it’s easy to get into and remove all the items it comes with: The camera, a mounting cage, USB-C charge cable, two mounting bracket adapters, and the battery. Be advised: You will need a Micro-SD card (recommend a 64gb card at minimum), as there is no internal storage, and that is not included. The camera itself, fits into the palm of your hand, which amazes me, and it barely weighs anything.
Charging the unit was easy, and it charged within two hours, and inserting the battery and memory card is easy. Set up is also a breeze, there is a built-in step-by-step guide, and it even helps you link your phone to the camera, to be used as a remote, to view and upload pictures/video footage. You can also use it to change some settings. Once you get the device programed how you like, it’s good to go.
I tested it out by filming my roommates’ cats, I would have done it while kayaking, but it’s autumn and too cold. The 4k video quality was amazing, and very smooth. I even snapped a couple of pictures and they turned out very well. Sending the footage to the GoPro cloud was a snap, and I had no issues on Wi-Fi or my LTE data. I certainly appreciate the LCD display on the front, giving me information about how much run time I have left and storage space on my card.
Overall, if you are looking for a good adventure/action camera, or something good to attach to a drone, this camera is certainly worth the price.

If you are a fan of action cameras, this one takes it to the next level. Video is so stable, it's unreal. The camera also takes GREAT photos, I've uploaded two of them. If I could upload video I would, but just take my word for it.
This is by far the BEST GoPro you can buy. (GoPro HERO 7 Black) All of the models are good, but I say go big or go home. You won't regret it. The Black has ALL of the features, so just go for it.
Only downside, is price. It is still very expensive, but it you know the brand you know why.

The Definitive Action Camera

The Definitive Action Camera
As a first-time GoPro owner, I was skeptical about incorporating the camera into my outdoor adventures. My iPhone has always seemed perfectly fine. But the flexibility and video-stabilization features offered by the Hero7 Black are truly eye-opening.
PROS:
- Small, portable design. Adds virtually no weight no a backpack or luggage.
- Perfectly simple controls. A one-touch button on the top is used to start and stop videos or take still photos. The touchscreen is sharp and makes it easy to set up your shot.
- Video truly is "HyperSmooth" as advertised. I mounted the camera to the dashboard of my Jeep during a weekend off-road adventure and was amazed by the results. There were almost no signs of motion or rotation in the video -- it was incredibly stable and judder-free, even when going over massive rocks.
- The TimeWarp feature also works as advertised, resulting in beautiful and stable time-lapse videos. I tried this handheld and with the camera mounted -- it worked great in both situations. You can set the factor by which the video is slowed and the camera will tell you just how much footage will result with those settings.
CONS:
- It is difficult to navigate through the features and settings of the camera using the touchscreen. Maybe my fingers are just too big, but I usually have to resort to using the app to make most adjustments.
- Overall, pictures looks nice, but the camera definitely struggles with still photos in low light situations, introducing a lot of noise and sacrificing a lot of detail.
- The voice command feature is clunky, at best. I often had to repeat myself once or twice to get the camera to start recording or to take a picture.
- The inclusion of social features like live streaming to Facebook seems like a gimmick to me, but perhaps some people will find them useful.
OVERALL:
The Hero7 Black is an excellent action camera and it produces some of the most beautifully stable video I've seen. This might not be the best point-and-shoot camera for still photos, but for video recording of action and outdoor adventures, it doesn't get better than this. Highly recommended!

Silky Smooth Video
|
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Pros
- Super smooth video
- Auto orientation
- Same formfactor for existing mounts
Cons
- Battery life is short
- Audio could be better
Overall, I’m very impressed with the GoPro Hero 7 Black. While the outside looks unchanged from the previous model the Hero 7 packs impressive hardware with some new very special software tricks. The BIG trick being their intelligent software video stabilization. They advertised that the software can produce gimbal quality video and after trying it out I have to say that it comes very close.
To have some fun and test the Hero 7 I enlisted my biking friend who often records trail and park rides with a Go Pro strapped to their chest. The usual setup is an older GoPro with an electronic gimbal mounted via a chest strap. We tried one run with that typical setup and one run with the Hero 7 Black and you could hardly tell the difference.
As far as benefits go – with the Hero 7 Black you can lose the bulky gimbal and have a very basic chest strap and that is all you need to get the job done. This also means that you won’t have an extra part that you must pack and carry around.
However, it does come with its drawbacks. A gimbal can be setup to always stay view parallel to the ground looking toward the horizon – it adjusts for your vertical tilt. A GoPro Black 7 strapped to your chest will look out perpendicular to your body and has less flexibility on the vertical tilt. You should keep this in mind when mounting to make sure that your setup is going to give you the frame you need.
Overall from the stabilization side it does an excellent job and it should fit the needs of most users.
Another new feature is the auto rotation of video – now the GoPro will adjust the video to be portrait or landscape based on orientation. This orientation locks as soon as you hit record - no more fixing your video in post! This is a big deal and leads into another software aspect – Live Streaming. We watch videos on our phone and vertical video with the growth of Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram has increased dramatically in terms of popularity. Now not only can you record vertical video but you can also stream to your favorite service (Facebook, Twitch, Youtube, and Vimeo). This uses your phone’s cellular connection and my testing of streaming to Facebook shows that it works well - but your mileage may vary based on coverage. This opens a world of scenarios to video unique perspectives and experiences live as they happen – something that wasn’t possible before.
Also there is a very cool "TimeWarp" timelapse feature that utilizes the Hypersmooth functionality to create a super fast and smooth video. I used this mode as we hiked down a trial and the effect was like a constant floating camera following us the entire way.
At the end of the day - GoPro carried over many of the great features from the previous model - the ruggedness, voice control, and formfactor and built on these in a ways that added value for existing audience while also appealing to a very social generation of consumers. I think the result is a great uncompromising device that's extremely versatile for capture all of those special moments in a spectacular format.
One thing that I noticed hadn’t really improved was the audio quality – it still needs some improvement and if you are serious about needing good sound you will want an external mic. Additionally, battery life especially when recording high quality video didn’t seem to last – typically under one hour. These are far from deal breakers and there are solutions that address these issues like an extra mic and extra batteries – but it would be cool to see improvements that result in you not needing extra hardware.

This is almost perfect. The normal complaints are battery life (30-45 minutes) low light isn't the greatest. The stabilization is very good. Gimbal good, not quite, but close. The video is amazing, the gesture control, and live streaming is nice. The water proof, and dust proof is a must for me. I am very rough with it and it is holding up very well. I've had it for about a month with no issues.

My first GoPro, and I'm BLOWN away. I've had friends with both 4's and 5's, and the 5's had (what seemed like at the time) pretty great image quality. This one BLOWS those out of the water. I included a screenshot from a 2K 60FPS video I took, raw footage! Even just the screenshot shows the legit HDR that happens automatically.
So yes the image quality is LEGIT, but the Hypersmooth is what they are pushing, and for good reason!
I recorded an extremely bumpy drive, walked around, and then compared the footage with Hypersmooth on/off and its crazy obvious. For anyone needing smoother video while being incredibly mobile/no extra hardware it totally lives up to the hype.

Bought this to be our new family camera. This size is great and easy to use menus. Quality is great. Only using 1080P 60FPS right now but video looks great. Quick app to good for beginners to edit and make clips of all your videos. Price is on the high side but well worth it. You will get all the features compared to the silver or white.
