    Iteration not innovation

The Hero 7 Black is the latest action camera from GoPro and it brings several improvements over the previous generation. The most notable being HyperSmooth, claiming to offer gimbal like stabilization. The Hero 7 Black is the same dimensions as the previous generation (Hero 6), meaning you have an abundance of mounts and accessories to choose from. Unfortunately not much has changed on the inside (apart from increased RAM), meaning this update is mostly software improvements and optimization. The additional memory doesn’t go to waste however, as GoPro has improved video stabilization dramatically. With the latest update, the Hero 7 can stabilize footage up to 4K60 providing a clean, shake free video everyone can appreciate. The new stabilization isn’t limited to video, GoPro offers it on a new mode called TimeWarp. TimeWarp is stabilized time lapse video which looks great for long recordings, condensing the footage down while knowing when to momentarily slowdown during an action sequence. Beyond video stabilization the H7B can record up to 240 fps (1080p/720p) for capturing slow motion shots and can take photos. The photos aren’t any better then current generation smart phones, so I would stick to using this for what it does best (video). One thing I am disappointed with is the lack of battery life improvement on the current generation. The H7B uses the same battery and processor as H6B, so it’s no surprise that the battery life is still terrible. You will be lucky to get an hour or two of use out of it, as it drains the battery just browsing through the settings. I would like for GoPro to come out with a higher capacity battery but I feel it must be a limitation of the design and a larger battery may cause overheating. Perhaps a future Hero 8 black with a GP2 processor will be more efficient. In addition to battery issues, I found the Hero 7 still lacks refinement. The interface seems sluggish, often times a swipe or button press isn’t registered making the overall experience feel buggy. At this point in time, touch interfaces have come a long way so these inconsistencies really stand out coming from a refined product like a smart phone. The tiny display also has noticeable light bleed around the edges, again the product needs a little more polish for the price point. Overall, the GP Hero 7 Black is a great action camera for those who either have an older GoPro (Hero 5) or are looking to purchase their first action camera. I feel this generation is more of an iterative improvement, lacking innovation and refinement. The value with the H7B versus other cameras comes from a robust accessory market and advanced features like HyperSmooth. As much as I can nitpick the camera on other aspects HyperSmooth is more than just marketing, it truly does a fantastic job stabilizing video. Simply put, if you want to record video while in motion, this is the camera.

So I have had a GoPro or two over the years and I am going to compare this to the new fusion which I also bought. Night and freakin day! No comparison, they are completely different beasts. The hero has amazing stabilization and quality and ease of use as with all GoPros in the past. Hero 7 Black has been by far my favorite GP to date. Don't forget to get all of the accessories as these suckers burn through batteries and memory cards, STOCK UP. You also NEED the head strap. If you have a GP and no headstrap what is the point of owning one?

Used this for a SCUBA trip to the Red Sea. The camera took very good pictures both on land and underwater. I did notice the battery life seemed less than I expected. I will need to add supplemental lights when using underwater. It did a very good job overall. Easy to use for a first time GoPro user. Small and easy to manage.

Upgraded from the GoPro Hero 4 Silver. Definitely fun to use. Nice to not have to always have to worry about keeping a waterproof case on it like older models very user friendly and captures awesome photo and video. The Hypersmooth feature alone is worth the upgrade for me.

I use this camera to vlog, take pictures, and its perfect for my travels because it is so small and waterproof. The quality and the hypersmooth stabilization is amazing. The video and picture quality is really good too! It is very easy to carry around and easy to shoot and use.

Great pictures with very little vibration. Much more stable than older model we had. Just wish battery life was longer. Get about 40 minutes . Overall great pictures and love that it’s waterproof!

Its by far the best most advanced, has all the necessary features and is simply worth every penny. you can control this gopro with your iphone from a distance. set up your gopro app on your phone and you can see what your go pro sees in real time, and basically use your phone as a remote control. that feature alone is mind blowing. i mounted my gopro on the underside of my boat in the bahamas to see all the marine life and sharks and had my phone up top and was switchign between camera mode and video mode to take all the pics and control the go pro from above and it was amazing. that alone was a huge deal maker and game changer for me

Love my Hero7 Camera! I brought specifically to bring to Aruba on our annual family vacation and the kids had a blast with it. The videos under water are amazing, so clear and the sound quality is crisp. It's the perfect camera for action sports and activities too. We use it to Scuba Dive, swim in our own pool, and to bring on waterslides. It's very durable and easy to use. Definitely purchase the extra battery because it dies rather quickly. Also, the Go Pro Adventure Kit has all of the right accessories necessary for water and action videos. I highly recommend this camera!

The GoPro Hero 7 Black is a sturdy action-camera compared to others. The quality is there and the UI is easy to use and navigate. The video stabilizers work really well and you don't get any bouncy video footage. Voice command is easy to use as well with a few simple commands that are useful. My only negative about this is the App, which wouldn't pair the first time. I had to uninstall and retry multiple times to pair the GoPro to its App. Also, the battery life isn't too great either. I haven't tested this underwater yet, but I'm sure it'll hold up either way.

Image stabilization is excellent. No more shaky videos that make the viewer dizzy! We threw it in the water, sand rain and never missed a beat. I am going to get an extra battery. The recording capacity exceeds the battery life. If you are going to be away from a plug get an extra battery so you won’t miss anything. I’m am very satisfied with this unit and recommend it to anybody that worries if their camera/ video will get ruined it rains or gets dunked in water. With the floaty handle you wont lose it if dropped in the deep. Frank

I got the GoPro specifically to capture my honeymoon to Bali and it did not fail me. The footage shot on the Go Pro is crystal clear. The functions are easy to use and follow. My one concern would be a small lag in the screen, it’s not to noticeable and I don’t know if anyone else experienced it but if I swipe for the next footage, there is a slight delay before the screen registers the swipe. The go pro does heat up pretty quick with continuous use. I have an extra battery as I was aware that this camera does drain the battery.

The new Hero 7 Black is the best GoPro ever made. They have finally fixed all sound issues! Even when the camera gets submerged it drains out and sound is back within seconds. It also supports external microphones powered or non-powered. The new stabilization feature makes it look like it's on a gimbal. My only issue is that it doesn't seem to fully charge to 100%. Mine is always at 98 when I leave it on charge for a couple of hours. Could be a battery issue since I'm charging it while it's in the GoPro. The camera also gets very hot when recording at 4k 60p but that's understandable.

The camera itself is great. The picture quality doesn’t look like much on the little screen but when I transferred my pics to the computer, I was thrown back at how great the pictures look. The camera fits perfectly in your hand. Yes you can buy the attachments but don’t feel pressured because the camera is lightweight and palm size. But please do yourself a favor, buy extra batteries. The battery was fully charged, walked around shooting pictures and did some filming and the battery drained within the hour at least 40%. However, this is due to the 4K HD quality of the camera so the battery life does go fast. I packed a few extra batteries luckily and was fine for a day in the city.

The video quality and sound are superb for its size. The durability and versatility of this camera is absolutely amazing. The ease of use is also very nice. Looking forward to take this on hiking, fishing and hunting trips later this year. The only negative that I have noticed with this is that the battery life drains pretty fast, so definitely get more than one battery. Overall, this is a nice versatile, compact and durable action camera that produces quality video, sound and photos.

Great video quality. Great stabilization. Battery drains even when unit powered off. Must remove battery when not in use. This is normal according to a search on the issue for hero 7 black. Can only add gps overlay with gopro quik software but quik only gives option to upload to youtube. I need the video overlaid and saved to my device so i can edit in other ways like dual camera view screen in screen, etc with other editors. 1080 video is about 17 minutes long then gopro apliys it automatically amd quik software will not merge 2 pieces of video. Its the best option for the money at 239.00

I love the product, I love the quality. Unfortunately it’s a product made to waste money. If you’re using it, even though it says it lasts 3 hours, the battery while you’re using it only lasts about 1 hour and you need to have a charger that doesn’t need an outlet in case you’re traveling. I suggest you invest in 3-4 batteries a charger and set your screensaver and everything to save the battery as much as possible. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to capture half my trip because the GoPro kept dying before I even got to the place and realized it was somehow on without even showing it being on. I had turned it off and it stayed on. However as I changed the automatic turn off to 2 mins, it surely turns off now. I’d return this and buy something else, but I already invested in so much. I’ll consider gifting it eventually. I wished it had been a bit more simple, I guess because of how complex it is, it drains battery easy and it cuts the videos automatically after 8mins so you end up with tons of footage rather than something long and constant.

The GOPro Hero 7 is the most versatile and compact action camera to get...the picture quality is amazing, and editing videos with the Quik app is pretty easy...great for taking to the theme parks as it fits in your pocket and one touch recording is a breeze. Fun to film underwater or in the pool shots! And buy the Geek Squad warranty with it! Chances are you will need it with all the places you will take it with you!

While this is definitely the best GoPro that they’ve made, it’s still a GoPro. It struggles in low light, is kinda clunky to use (not terribly so though), and the footage needs a lot of work to look cinematic if that’s something you’re interested in. However, the stabilization is great (and I mean GREAT), it’s super small and light, and if you’re in good light, the footage looks good, and can even look kinda cinematic if you’re willing to put in the effort in post. Overall, if you’re okay with its limitations and want a GoPro to do GoPro things, I think you’ll really like this camera, otherwise, it’s just okay.
