Customers are saying

Customers frequently mention the outstanding video quality and ease of use of the HERO8 Black 4K Waterproof Action Camera. Many appreciate its effective stabilization and compact size, while some users point out that the battery life could be improved. Other less frequent concerns include the lack of a removable lens and the camera's price point.

Not a huge fan. Value vs cost just isn't there for me personally. Great camera, but too pricey.

First impressions First thing I did when I opened it was install the screen protectors I previously bought for it. This model doesn’t include the removal lens, so I didn’t want to take any chances. I updated the device, setup didn’t pop-up automatically when I turned on the device, but after I downloaded the app and went to connect the GoPro, setup was a breeze. Very satisfied with how easy it was. Design: The design is very attractive. No outer case shell needed as it has the collapsible fingers are built into it. No removable lens as I stated but its supposed to 2x more impact resistant than before. Its size/shape is slightly different than previous models, but pretty similar. Feels nice in your hands and rugged at the same time. Features: There are many new features in the new GP8, but the two big ones are HyperSmooth 2.0 and TimeWarp 2.0. While I haven’t had much hands-on with TimeWarp (but looks impressive from other reviewers), the HyperSmooth feature is phenomenal. I have an off-brand action camera that has been fairly good, but while going on a job I decided to take both cameras with me and its night and day difference. One gives you a headache watching and the GoPro is smooth and steady. If you own a GoPro already, I imagine these two features are probably the main reasons you would want to upgrade. I am also a big fan of streaming live to social media, one thing I couldn’t really ever do with my phone when being active. Note: As of right now you must use GoPro official batteries for HyperSmooth 2.0 to work. 3rd party batteries do not appear to enable this feature. Opinion: I think it’s a great device with some attractive mods coming out for it at the end of the year, including led light and an external forward-facing display. Voice control works fairly well, only a couple of times I’ve had to repeat myself, but works great. I plan on mounting it to my Jet Ski and use my vocals to control it. Another thing I’ve noticed that they introduced are customizable presets, big fan of these. Connects very quickly and smoothly from my iphone as well. I’m used to more of a hassle connecting to camera’s, but this makes everything easy and automated. A couple of things that I’m not a fan of are the non-removable lens and the camera can get pretty dang hot. Which leads me to my next rave, is GoPro Plus. I signed up for it the day I got the camera. For $5/month it includes unlimited cloud storage for your media at full quality, big discount on accessories from their website, and they repair any damage done to your GoPro, including a damaged lens! I was shocked it was such a good deal. Overall: I think it’s a great camera, mostly all newer cameras shoot in 4k/60fps and have high quality photography and video settings, but with this GoPro you get technology that really maximizes those settings. The GoPro plus option definitely gives me a better peace of mind when using this in more “active” situations.

This device overheats after very little recording time, app doesn't work with my android phone, quirky charging, etc. It was expensive and recommended for video recording purposes, yet shuts off after a few minutes of recording. The device gets very hot. I plan to report to Consumer Products Safety as it is likely a fire hazard.

On Nov. 20, 2021, I purchased a Hero8 for pickup at the store, battery but no instructions included. Two weeks later, after careful light use only a handful of times, this "action camera" died! So I sent it to GoPro under warranty with the battery in the Best Buy packaging as I bought it. Finally, mid-Jan 2022, GoPro sent me a replacement, but with NO battery included. It has taken a week now just to get them to agree to send me the battery they owe me. What do I do if this "action camera" dies, too? Maybe Best Buy can help, but GoPro products are not as advertised, and the company response is poor.

I had to return TWO of these cameras. The first one got so hot that the corners of the back screen burned. The second camera stopped charging and turning on after 3 days. I purchased hundreds of dollars worth of accessories for this and am sorely disappointed with my first and only experience with a GoPro product.

Battery life is very low (it lasts less then one hour) . The camera gets very hot after 20 minutes to the point of shutting down and losing the recording. Then I find out that if I record higher then 1080 my older computer can not play the recording. I would not recommend this item.

    Disappointing

I was excited about most of the changes (built in mount, better stabilization, new menu system and custom presets), but perhaps the most glaring mistake is the non-replaceable lens cover. I realize GoPro is trying to force people to buy their GoPro Plus subscription, but this is just silly. If I get a scratch or crack on the lens cover, I want to be able to replace it on the spot - not have to send it to GoPro. It also makes ND Filters a pain (you have to snap on an adapter and then put magnetic filters over the fixed lens cover). With the GP7 and Osmo Action, you just remove the lens cover and screw on the ND filter. And some say that this non-removable lens cover allows it to be slimmer. Yes, but the overall size of the GP8 is significantly bigger than the GP7 and Osmo Action. And the built in mount sounds great, but it starts to get wobbly after a few uses. It’s not nearly as stable as a fixed mount because of the hinges). The new battery door is annoying. It constantly pops off and is just a poor design in general. Ugh. The stabilization is great, but the Boost mode has some weird jittering effect on the horizon in videos. And Hypersmooth 2.0 is one par with Osmo Action’s Rocksteady, so it’s better than the GP7 but not much better than the Osmo Action if at all. And for $400, I figure they’d match DJI and put a monitor on the front. Instead, I’d have to buy a mod and display for an additional $160? Also, you can’t shoot 4K 60fps in Linear mode. On the Osmo Action, I can shoot 4K 60fps in dewarp with Rocksteady. For $70 less, you can get the Osmo Action which is a much better value IMO. Front screen built in. Larger rear screen with a better UI and no freezing issues. Replaceable lens cover. Quick switch button to switch between custom presets. Stabilizing on par with Hypersmooth 2.0. If you can live the Osmo Action’s shortcomings, it’s a much better buy IMO.
