The most thrilling big screen blockbuster of 2013
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.THE movie to see on the big screen in 2013 wasn’t some overblown comic book movie, it was a quick, 90 minute visual FX thrill ride called GRAVITY and was one of the very few modern movies actually worth paying the extra money to see in 3D (LIFE OF PI was the best 3D presentation of 2012). Alfonso Cuaron is no slouch, he directed CHILDREN OF MEN, one of the best serious sci-fi movies of the decade. He also directed PRISONER OF AZKABAN, the most artsy movie of the Harry Potter franchise. He’s now proven his ability to tell a lean, compelling thriller. I can’t remember the last time I’d been so on edge at the movies before GRAVITY and the next time that I felt that tense was on the small screen watching GAME OF THRONES season 4 episode 9 with the big battle to defend Castle Black, a tv series which had a lot of episodes prior to make me invested in the fates of its characters and the threat to the 7 Kingdoms if the enemy broke through to pillage the land. GRAVITY doesn’t have the same luxury of time to invest you in its characters, yet it still succeeded in doing so. Despite minimal time for backstory to acquaint us with our characters, we still care what happens to Sandra Bullock and George Clooney’s astronaut characters. GRAVITY isn’t the type of movie to win awards for a great screenplay, because that’s not what it’s aiming to be. HITCHCOCK was famous for his ability to elicit responses from his audiences, directing their emotions from scene to scene and Cuaron’s GRAVITY works in a similar fashion, albeit in a different genre. I was on the edge of my seat throughout most of the film’s runtime, hoping the characters could survive in the face of an orbiting storm of deadly space junk shrapnel and dwindling oxygen supplies. This was the most tense, thrilling movie of 2013 and I won’t spoil it for you. I was rooting for GRAVITY to win Best Picture on Oscar night because I hadn’t yet seen Spike Jonze’s HER or AMERICAN HUSTLE and my favorite film of the year BEFORE MIDNIGHT was only nominated for Adapted Screenplay (even though the winner of the category was an excellent film, I still think BEFORE MIDNIGHT deserved the recognition). I’ve long felt that the best visual FX movie illusions aren’t used for the digital conjuring of imaginary dragons or futuristic spaceships and aliens, but the photorealistic creations which our eyes have trouble discerning from real objects. GRAVITY succeeds at this just like LIFE OF PI did the previous year. By adding 3D rendered computer graphics objects to a brilliant conversion of filmed 2D elements, the filmmakers made more effective use of 3D than most films photographed entirely in 3D. Being a new movie, the Blu-ray transfer looks beautiful as expected and professional reviewers have described the picture and sound quality as flawless and as one of the best-looking, best-sounding Blu-ray releases of the year. I’ve only watched it in 2D so far, but it looks great! I was impressed with the 3D version in theaters, but don’t have the set-up at home to watch the 3D disc right now. I figured it was worth the extra $5 for the 3D disc that I can eventually check out on a friend’s home theater system and the professional reviews on the 3D disc have been very positive.

3D could have been better
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The first time I watched this movie, I wasn't sure how I felt about it. I thought it was good, but wasn't quite sure it was worth it (The first time I saw it was after I already bought it because it had gotten such great reviews). After watching all the special features and watching the movie for a second time, I developed a stronger appreciation for it and I'm glad I bought it, even though I felt the 3D could have been better. There just didn't seem like there were a whole lot of scenes that blew me away in terms of the 3D, which was disappointing given how cool space usually is in 3D. There were a few 3D scenes that were pretty cool, but I felt they ended too soon. It was like, "Oh, this is going to be cool if it keeps coming toward me!" But then the element that was coming at me would go out of focus or the camera would cut away. My wife kept getting scared though when all of the shrapnel came flying at us, so that was pretty funny. No iTunes Digital Copy with this movie, only UV.

A film that's literally "out of this world!"
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.CGI dominates a good amount of films out there today, and rarely will anybody watch a film and think that it wasn't done in a computer. 'Gravity' is not only one of the best looking films out there, but also brings with it a compelling story that anybody will enjoy watching. As the film opens up, a crew is working to repair the Hubble Space Telescope when Houston reports that a missile strike on a satellite has caused a cloud of debris to orbit the Earth. The cloud is heading right for the shuttle and when it hits, it takes you on a ride you won't forget. 'Gravity' is one of the only films today that will make you be on the edge of your seat while clinging to the sides of it to make sure you don't fly off into the empty void of outer space. This film is not one to miss, especially on Blu-ray.

Best title of 2013
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This was hands down the best movie of 2013 for me. It was such an unexpected surprise, and was refreshing to see a director actually give a "space" movie the attention to detail it deserved. While the movie is not 100% scientifically accurate, many respected individuals have commented that the movie does portray a believable feeling of being stuck in space. It is a non-stop thrill ride that has great characters, amazing soundtrack, and astonishing visual effects. The blu-ray picture and audio quality is exquisite as well--make sure to find a big HDTV and surround sound system to experience this movie the way it was meant to be seen!

Why isn't Gravity in your library yet?
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Not many movies are surprising in presentation. It is a refreshing change to see a movie developed and filmed with such a simplistic plot but so well executed. Breathtaking describes not only the picture and audio, but the script and acting. There's a reason for an academy award. The 2D video is reference quality (have not watched 3D version). Although have not watched 3D version yet, all reviews have raved on the 3D version, and I could imagine why. Audio is near-demo worthy 5.1 MA, although a 7.1 treatment may have been better. The number of HD extras were surprising, and generally very good.

Excellent effects, best in 3D for me
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Lots of hype around this movie when I bought it and I will say a lot of it was well deserved. Although it's old news, I did enjoy watching this movie, especially in 3D and the effects were amazing. It was about as close to being in space as I would ever want to be. The hopelessness of floating alone is very frightening and awe-inspiring. I thought the plot was interesting, even if it was a little out there, however space debris is a big issue so not too bad. Again, very fun film and not too long either. Great pace to keep you involved.

Beautiful movie!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I did not get to see this movie in the theater but heard great things about it. It lived up to the hype for me, at least the way I watched it with my Panasonic 3D projector on a 14 ft screen it made me feel like I was there like I had the best idea of what it was like to be in that situation. Great cast although small, this movie was made for the visuals and not as much story and it defiantly delivers on that. It should have won for movie of the year in my opinion!

Phenomenal Movie!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I love this movie! I'm glad this edition came out and that I didn't buy the first one. It has so many more special features that should have been on the original disc. Be warned, though, if you are looking for 3D with a Dolby Atmos sound track, it isn't here. This disc only includes the 2D version of the movie.

Amazing Cinematography!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The number one reason I wanted to see this film was because of the director, Alfonso Cuarón. He also directed the movie "Children of Men", which had long complicated action sequences with no cuts! If you enjoyed Gravity, but wanted a little more action, you should see Children of Men. The effects in Gravity were the other amazing thing about it, you really feel like it was filmed in space!

Overall, an awesome movie
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It's an experience. If you love the topic of physics, cosmology and find yourself typically mesmerized what humans have achieved today in our attempts to get out of our pretty planet and reach the stars, you will love this movie. It shows in a crude fashion how inhospitable it can be out there, how lonely we seem to be in the universe, it's loaded with joy, hope, despair, sacrifice.

Visually Stunning
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Gravity was meant for the big screen. Make your popcorn, sit down and prepare to be completely immersed in a world thousands of miles above the earth. The scenery is stunning and the action keeps you on the edge for the entire show. Sandra B allows us to grow with her as she evolves from a timid scientist to a survivor. I would definitely recommend this movie.

Smart sci-fi in glorious 1080p HD 3D!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great reference quality disc with generous bonus features including a feature length "making of" documentary and a short film by the director's son that is connected to Gravity's narrative. Script, direction, performances and technical aspects are all top tier and come together to make for a compelling viewing experience. One of my favorite films of 2013.

Survival Story Made better by 3D
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.James Cameron said that this "was the greatest space movie ever made." I would disagree. It's definitely the best 3D space Movie ever, but for me the story is too simple. Don't get me wrong, the movie is great! Bullock and Clooney make this movie more engaging and the ambient/electronic music hammers it home....but it's not 2001...

Excellent movie and Special effects!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a must own 3D movie. The very best 3D movie next to Avatar. If you are starting your 3D collection, get this. The movie is also very good along with great audio. Very crisp and sharp. The 3D really does add so much to the movie. 3D is the way to go with this movie. Highly recommended.

Very realistic I thought...
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. For a movie, I thought Gravity was realistic for a space movie, something I don't know a lot about but it seemed pretty realistic. What Sandra's character goes through is almost scary, but probably appropriate for most kids depending on their age. The special effects I thought looked great.

Absolutely Amazing.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This was the most intense movie I've ever watched. It requires your absolute focus and attention to get through it, but once you get hooked, you'll have no problem staying on the edge of your seat taking in every little detail. Well worth the time and money to see it. You won't regret it.

Really enjoyed the movie
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great movie! On my 70" TV the picture is clear and the blacks are black. Incredible sound also if you have the right sound system to take advantage of it. Like that it has an ultraviolet copy. This allows me to watch the movie on my tablets, notebooks, phones, etc.
