Greenworks is one of the major brands in electric yard tools, offering high power tools that don’t have the mess, fuss, and emissions of gas-powered tools, while still having enough capacity to get the job done for most homeowners. One of the latest offerings in their newer 80V line is an 18” chainsaw, that promises power similar to a gas motor. Can it deliver?
Opening the box, you have the chainsaw, with the blade covered safely in a sheath, the substantial 80V 4.0ah extended run battery, the charging dock, a wrench, and a set of instructions. This tool comes fully assembled from the factory and needs no assembly. I do suggest you read the instructions, as it has several key safety and operational features of the chainsaw, including how to use the tensioner and the chain brake. Plug in the charging dock and slide the battery in, and it fires up an active fan to pour power into this big battery pack. The pack charges pretty quickly considering its size. One thing I that did strike me is how narrow the chainsaw motor housing is. With no gas tank, piston, carburetor, etc, the brushless motor tucks in neatly, and most of the space in the back of the chainsaw is just to hold the battery pack. With the battery pack in the unit it is not super light, but it balances well and is very maneuverable.
Before you go out and start cutting, you need to fill the blade oil reservoir with chainsaw oil. This protects the chain, the gears, and the blade, and is essential for the longevity of the tool and cutting performance. None comes in the box, but it can be found easily. I used a funnel to make filling easier. Compared to a small gas motor, this one oil type is much easier to deal with than fuel, engine oil, or mixing fuel and oil for a small 2 stroke engine. After you get the blade oil filled, it’s time to get cutting.
Operation is simple, remove the sheath, release the chain brake, press in the safety button, and pull the trigger. It fires up instantly at full power, and only makes noise when cutting. Operation, compared to gas, is quiet, and power is plentiful. It cuts easily though treated lumber and tree limbs, allowing me to tear down some extra material I needed to dispose of and do some spring pruning with ease. I didn’t need to fell a full tree, but there is plenty of power here to do so for all but the largest of trees, which unless you are a trained professional, I do not suggest you try at home.
Overall, for most homeowners looking for a tool to maintain their property and do some demolition work or rough cutting of boards and other lumber, this is a great tool for the job. Not having to mess with gas and have the constant noise of an engine running is a huge plus, and makes this a great tool for most homeowners.

I bought the 18' chainsaw last year. It works well, but the chain gets out of the saw all the time. The battery is also very poor. It only lasts for a few minutes. This is frustrating me a lot. I cannot return it, either.

Hello BinodS - Thank you for sharing your experience. New chains tend to stretch; so be sure to check the chain tension frequently and tension as required. However, be sure to never tension a warm chain before storing as chains shrink when cooling and this can damage the chain, bar, and saw. Please ensure that when you remove the side cover that the following parts are there and in order: sprocket (chain wheel), chain wheel washer and finally the c-lip. These parts are imperative when it comes to keeping the chain on. The 4Ah battery provides up to 270 cuts on a single charge. This product carries a 4-year warranty from date of purchase and wearable parts carry a 90-day warranty against wear and tear. We hope this information has helped. Hello PaulM. We are sad to hear you do not recommend this chainsaw. The unit can make up to 250 cuts through 4" x 4" pressure treated lumber. The number of cuts per charge or run time that you receive would depend on the load acting on the saw (i.e. the thickness and type of wood being cut) as the chainsaw would use more battery power on tougher and thick objects being cut. The cutting technique can also play a role in the run time as well. Ensure that you do not force it, and allow the saw to do the cutting. We would be happy to investigate to see whether your cuts per charge would be considered average; please contact Greenworks at 1-888-909-6757 or start a live chat on Greenworks Tools website.

I’ll start off by saying that this is my first chainsaw so I can’t compare it to others. It really works great and I highly recommend it. Here are my pros and cons.
Pros:
Cuts easily and well.
Only runs when you are actually cutting so you don’t have to deal with the constant noise and vibration of a gas version.
Very quiet with basically no vibration when cutting.
The battery lasts a long time. The battery has three LEDs to indicate how much battery is left. I cut up three large down trees from a storm and still had three LEDs on.
Feels very light weight and not a problem holding it when using it. The battery is heavy by itself but you can’t even tell once it is in the saw.
Cons:
The battery charger is obnoxiously loud. There is a fan in it that runs when charging and it is so loud you can’t be in the same room as it. This is really something that the engineers should look at.
It is very easy to add oil, however there is no way to check how much oil is left without taking the cap off. For a saw that consumes a lot of oil, this is a nuisance.
Overall, great chainsaw that does what it is supposed to and excels at it. Highly recommended. I will be replacing all my gas yard tools with Greenworks electric.

The top thing that I really enjoy about this chainsaw is the longevity battery life with the chainsaw.. Not having to look for an outlet and not having to worry about dragging a cord is a definite plus. We were able to cut up 6 small trees and we only used 1 bar. The trees we cut were moderately thick in diameter and it cut them effortlessly. The extra tools they provided came in handy. We didn’t have to go out and buy these separately.. Some of the features that I liked was that it has a lock and unlock safety feature when you are using the chainsaw so it doesn’t accidentally come on when or if you have it resting. Another great feature that is important to me is it is very quiet. I like to work early in the morning and it is quiet enough to not wake my family. It has no heavy smell and it has no idling. Overall this chainsaw is something that I love being a part of my tools it’s very convenient. If you’re going to do big jobs I would probably recommend having two batteries and buy some lubricant. This is one thing I wish they would have provided was the lubricant, it does not come with any.

If you are looking at getting a 18v chainsaw or an 80v chainsaw… to me it isn’t even a question, get the 80v chainsaw. I have a 18v chainsaw that I got to compare to this guy. I can compare this to a gas-powered chainsaw all day long unlike a smaller 18v chainsaw. To be fair, I am not a chainsaw expert and only use them while camping, doing community cleanup stuff, and other instances where I like to have one and can use one, but don’t ask me a lot of questions about all the terminology. This can eat through trees and bushes without an issue. Now I’m not trying to cut down a forest so if you need a chainsaw all day everyday and don’t have AC power, money, space, or all three to have three batteries to swap between. The battery charges in about 30 min and the run time is around 25 so you can probably get away with two batteries or like myself one is more than enough but three would keep it going constantly. This is also not a lightweight chainsaw, it’s not much heavier than a large chainsaw, for me this isn’t a problem as I don’t climb or take this too far away from my shed or car. The battery itself has a 3 light meter that is useful for someone like me that doesn’t need the chainsaw all the time. Though now I want to replace all my other outdoor tools as 80v batteries and brushless motors are amazing compared to smaller batteries. The chain oil reservoir has a nice lid that sits flusher and overall, the chainsaw looks awesome. Overall, I love this chainsaw and is much better than my old chainsaw. Overall, I would recommend this as the maintenance of an electric chainsaw, especially for un non-daily users is so much more bearable. Electric motors last forever and if you keep the battery in a non-frozen area and/or use it between multiple tools they last quite a long time as well. I got gas out of my garage along time ago (besides the SUV) and I love not mixing the oil for gas for some of the devices and having a pure can for others. These don’t smell, they work immediately (unless you let a battery die and don’t have multiple) and are just less messy.

At first glance, this Greenworks chainsaw looks good. Closer inspection shows the plastic is on the cheap side. Think of another green gasoline saw and you'll know what I mean. Does not include a sample of bar and chain oil, so be sure to get some.
This is good for the occasional use owner. With the storms that just rolled through the midwest I had a chance to give it a good workout. For larger jobs do yourself a favor and get an extra battery if you think you'll do a lot of cutting. I was able to use this on some walnut and maple limbs, anywhere from 2-10ish inches in diameter. The bucking spikes are nice for leveraging cuts. Mostly cut like a dream. I'm not sure if it was the harder wood, but out of the box, the chain dulled fairly quick in my opinion. Neighbor had a sharpener that fixed it up in a jiffy. Depending on they speed you're cutting and type of wood, you can expect just over an hour's use out of the battery. On the pieces I cut, even the larger ones, I had no issues with it stalling. Used it to cut down a mimosa tree as well that was about 14 inches in diameter. Went through the soft wood easily. Be aware that the battery charger has a fan on it so noise when charging is normal, but not obnoxious. Something else to be aware of is the weight. It's a pretty heavy saw and has a feels to weigh more than my 16 inch gas saw.
The 4 stars in my opinion is for the weight, chain dulling quickly and battery life.
Plusses is it can be stored anywhere, no fuel to worry about leaking out. Bar oil has not leaked, so it can probably be stored in it as well. It has plenty of power to do the job for an average homeowner.
With extra batteries can do a full days work.
If you;re looking to get away from gasoline powered chainsaws, this is a very good option.

Very effective tool. Comparable to a medium size Stihl chainsaw, but without issues for starting it. Instant on/off is better than running gasoline saw continuously. Battery recharges quickly. Works well for 30 minutes of actual cutting. To work longer get a second battery.

This Chainsaw is a Homeowners Dream

The Greenworks Pro 18 inch 80 volt battery powered chainsaw with brushless motor seems to be a homeowners dream. This chainsaw just plain works, very well to be honest, with very minimal cons that will still have you buying this saw.
First, the packaging was very well setup, zero damage happened from the manufacturer not even placed in a protective box, the shelf box ad packing made it to my homes with zero damage. Pulling it out of the box, I immediately started charging the 80v battery so my testing could be set from a full charge, I did not even check or try the unit for charge out of the box.
Next, I checked the chain adjustment for my 1/8 inch of play I like to run my blades at on all chainsaws and decided to take out a thick bush in front of my home. The bush was 8 inches thick at the base and cut through it in less than 10 seconds, not bad for a sappy pine bush and the chain that was included with it. The saw never once slowed down or bogged, it was plenty of power to get through the bush. I next cut off limbs from my maple tree overhanging the garage, wow, cut right through the first few but the original chain was already dull. I went out and bought a new chain from a brand I always use and now this chainsaw competes with my much more expensive gas powered brand, probably does better when the battery is full.
Also, the sound of the unit is different than gas obviously but you still need ear protection, the high pitch whine is just as taxing to your ears as a 2 stroke screaming through logs as well. Is it easier on your ears, yes, as long as you stay under half throttle, go over half, it is just as loud up close as gas powered but the sound does not carry near as far, so your neighbors will be extremely happy.
Pros:
Ease of Use
No Gas
Quick Charge
Lots of cuts before the battery needs recharged
Quick cutting
Safety Handle
Lighter than gas
Cons
Still loud
Safety Handle can cramp larger hands when rotating the saw
Original Chain Dulls Quickly
Overall, the saw works great and would easily pay the asking price for this piece of HD equipment.

Replaced my gas powered chainsaw

Ever wonder how good a cordless chainsaw performs? I did. I've had my share of 18-40v cordless hardware, and while they were great for convienince, they just didn't have the power to get some of the jobs done. So I had some hesitation in trying out an 80v cordless chainsaw.
No more reservations. I spent an evening cutting back my bamboo garden and I know even a lower performing chainsaw could handle it so no surprize on how it handled that task. After 20 min of cutting I was down to 2/3 green lights on the battery.
Next task was to take down an dead Japanese Plumb Tree. Initial cuts and it chewed easily through the wood. Next was the main cut and, WOW!, the Greenworks chainsaw cut just as well as my gas powered! There was still some power so I started cutting the tree down into manageable chunks but had to quit because it was starting to rain. I was down to just 1 level on the battery indicator so I'm not sure if it would have lasted the full job.
Other than chain oil, no other petrol products are needed. Recharging took around an hour - I didn't accurately time it. My neighbor has a Christmas tree farm so I'll be showing them my new toy well before the next holiday season.
While it does have some weight, I really didn't feel like it was unreasonably heavy. The battery itself is around 6lbs and was easily maneuverable. The noise was less than a gas powered saw, but it's still loud and I recommend not leaving out the hearing protection while using it.
The chainsaw impressed me so much I had to get the string trimmer also. Once it stops raining I'll be putting both to work since I have more bamboo to clear out and an overgrown yard to cut. Next I need to find more dead trees to take out, lol.

Very impressed.Had a tree come down after a recent storm.Made quick work of it with this beast.Made 22 cuts over the course of half an hour (8”to 10”).I put the battery on the charger afterwards and it looked like it was showing 2 dots,so about half spent.A little disappointing. It’s a 4ah.Probably going to invest in another battery, yikes they ‘re expensive ! By the way I’m 72 ,Mother Nature has been kicking my butt lately, but the weight of the saw was no problem.

a big beefy battery

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Not sure exactly what I was expecting, but it wasn't a battery of this size. Obviously a chain saw is going to require a lot of torque, and that's going to require a beefy battery, but this one is a monster. The charger has its own built-in fan to manage the temperature when charging. It's quite heavy as well. Most of the weight can be attributed to the motor and the battery, and it probably comes in pretty close to what a gas-powered chain saw is going to weigh. If you're new to chain saws, you may not realize that you're going to need bar and chain oil to operate this. This isn't a little dose of oil to keep the engine lubricated; it actually gets consumed during operation of the chain saw. The manual claims that a full reservoir will give you 20-40 minutes of operation. So if you don't already have it on hand because you own another chain saw, you will need to buy some before you can use this one. Once you have the prerequisites met, it's pretty simple to run. Make sure the chain brake is off, then there's simple safety button to depress the trigger. There's plenty of power, but that's expected with a battery of this size. Ergonomics are pretty standard for a chain saw; the weight balance is good. This isn't some light-weight electric weed trimmer; it's a no-nonsense power tool.

Great alternative to a 2 cycle gas saw. No more gas/oil, loud
sound. I was working on some 6-8' cuts and it was like slicing butter. Only complaint from me is that with larger cuts it definitely runs the battery down quick and overheated it. I had to wait about 30 mins for it to cool off before I could re-charge. Great for smaller jobs not so much on large jobs.
