At first i had an issue with the battery. But went to best buy and their amazing customer service replaced it for me. The mower is nice for a small yard. The battery dies fast, so if you have bigger yard I would not recommend it.

This product lawn very well, and easy to use the only problem is the Battery finishes quickly. My advice is anybody that are going to buy this product. Will need to buy either a higher battery capacity or buy two batteries.

Mower works okay and is sufficient for our .28 acre lot. I am disappointed by the confusing specifications on the Best Buy website. One of the images represents this mower as having “two autoswitch battery ports”, but in reality it only has one battery port. Probably will return the $250+ extra battery I purchased.

Operation is less than expected. With a battery of this size and wattage I expected more cutting time. If you use the self drive your battery is done in less than 9 minutes. And trying to register the product online is a nightmare.

The Greenworks 21" Self-Propelled BATTERY OPERATED Lawn Mower is a competitive mower in the battery operated mower market. A couple of my neighbors have converted from their 'red' gas mowers to these more environmentally friendly, green (literally) battery operated mowers. I've been intrigued, but wasn't convinced. My opinions have definitely been swayed. Right out of the box, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the mower deck is actually metal, and NOT plastic like my neighbors. This was off to a good start. Set up was easy enough, unfold the handle, add two nuts and bolts to secure it in place and insert the battery and you are good to go. When checking the battery, I charged it up to 4 bars, but the charger was still flashing. DO NOT REMOVE THE BATTERY YET. Let the charger go through it's full cycle and turn off, only then will you have a full battery. In the state I put it in the mower, seemingly with a full 4 bars, it actually wasn't fully charged. So - when taking the mower out on it's maiden voyage, my fear of range anxiety kicked in, when I was left stranded in my back yard with a 20' x 15' area still unmowed. I got about 30 mins of mow time out of the battery life, but that was user error, as it wasn't fully charged as I thought it was. And, on this first mow, as you can see, the grass was quite long, so the variable cutting speed that this mower has was working overtime. As you move forward and the mower notices that the grass is thicker, it kicks up the blade spin speed so as to not have the mower bog down. A really nice feature that I've never had on a gas mower. I had purposely let the grass grow long while waiting for the mower to arrive, to make sure it got a good test. During this first mow I did have to learn a few things. First off, starting the mower. Being used to a pull cord on the gas mower, I figured pressing the power button would make this one work. Nope. You have to hold the handle, and press and hold the power button. A safety feature obviously, but wasn't intuitive to start with. But got it worked out. The second idiosyncrasy was that when you are using the self-propelled mode, you have to release the handle in plenty of time before you want to pull the mower back. I found that the drive wheels kept getting bound up and didn't release the gear before I had pulled back, meaning I was pulling static wheels back instead of freewheeling. Once I had worked that out, it made it a lot easier. Also works when you are mowing rows and need to turn on a radius, you need to let go of the lever in plenty of time, otherwise the wheels remain bound to the motor. Aside from the mishap of the battery life and my initial range anxiety, the mower performed very well indeed, cutting very uniformly over my whole yard. I need to work on the height adjustment for the wheels, it's a little low for my lawn on the first pass, I did get a couple of scalped patches, but otherwise a nice, smooth, clean cut. The mower has a side attachment for mulching, and a bag for collecting the clippings, or if your grass isn't very tall, you can just mulch with no attachment. On my second mow, I made sure the battery was fully charged, made sure there were 4 full bars on the LED readout on the battery pack and inserted it into the mower. I was able to mow my yard, one week after the first cut, on a full battery with a little life to spare. From my previous range anxiety, I mowed quicker (the self-propelled feature has a variable speed to it, from 'tortoise to hare'). Tortoise is incredibly slow, hare, well, you're going to get a workout! I set it in the middle and went for it. With the shorter grass this time, and the full battery, and a slightly brisker pace, I was able to mow my yard pretty much in the same fashion as I did with my gas mower. An extra battery would alleviate range anxiety completely for my size of suburban yard, so I can see me purchasing another battery in the future, or another tool that comes with a battery the same size. The battery is a 4.0Ah battery and comes with a rapid charger. It offered a 60 min recharge time with a 40 min run time. So two batteries would be plenty for my yard as it's normally a 50 min job with a gas mower, taking the time I want to, rather than rushing to finish before the battery depletes. To put it into perspective, on a flat surface with relatively short grass, the mower with cut over 1/5 acre on a single full charge. Another feature this mower has that my gas mower doesn't is the ability to store it vertically with saves a lot of space in the garage. That coupled with no spark plug and no oil make it pretty much maintenance free apart from keeping it clean. Height adjustment was a pain on my gas mower, with a lever on each wheel. This mower has a 7-position single lever heigh adjuster which changes the height of all 4 wheels at the same time. That is a really nice feature to have. The 1.8kW power is the equivalent to a 150cc gas mower and it has a blade tip speed between 2800 and 3200 rpm, depending on when the SmartCut technology senses the tougher grass. This helps make the cut so nice and even. This mower may have just converted me to battery power. I have only used it twice so far, and the first time as mentioned wasn't perfect, but the second time I was a lot happier with the results. I need to fine tune the cutting height, and potentially purchase an additional battery (or tool with the same battery) and I may be a convert. Overall, I am impressed with the technology in the mower, and the features - another one I haven't mentioned yet are the 4 LED lights along the front, which enables you to mow later into the evening. My gas mower doesn't have lights, and I am not sure I've seen a gas mower with lights. If you are considering a foray into the world of battery powered mowers, then this Greenworks 21" Self-propelled Mower is definitely a good place to look.

Positives: Low maintenance: The mower is very low maintenance. There is no need to change the oil or spark plugs, and the battery is easily removable and rechargeable. Plus the battery charges super quick. I'd say 0 to usable in about 30 minutes Easy to start: It's very easy to start. Simply plug in the battery and grab the green lever and push start! Done! You're off the the races, no need to pull a cord. Does a great job mowing: I was shocked. It does a great job mowing. It cuts the grass evenly and leaves a nice, clean cut. I was blown away. Mainly because I thought electrics weren't good, but it is. I don't know why I feared the battery so much. Lasts long enough to mow front and back: My biggest concern was battery life. To my pleasant surprise it had a very long battery life. It can easily mow a front and back yard on a single charge. My yard is big IMO, but not huge. I wouldn't consider it a medium to small, but not enormous. Quiet: Compared to my old gas mower, this is very quiet. I didn't feel worried I'd wake my neighbors at 8 AM when I mowed on one day. I think this is a great option for those who want to avoid noise pollution. Pleasant to use: Last thing I liked was it was just a nice mowing experience. It is lightweight and easy to maneuver, making it easy to get around your yard without the self propelled feature. And nice to have when I needed it like by the fence. It's just a good device that I enjoyed using. Negatives: Small bag: The bag on this thing is way too small if you ask me! If you have a large lawn, you may need to empty the bag frequently especially if you skipped a week or it got a little longer than normal. Thin blade: The blade is thin. It may not be as durable as a thicker blade from a gas powered mower. I am just guessing here, but it may not be able to handle large objects like branches or rocks for long. I'd be willing to bet a gas mower will require less blade maintenance than this, but it's just a guess. The blade may be perfectly fine. Delay before wheels kick in: There is a slight delay before the self-propelled motors kick in. This can be jarring if you are pushing the mower up a hill or against a fence. Overall, the Greenworks mower is a great option for homeowners who are looking for a low-maintenance, quiet, and easy-to-use mower. It is perfect for small to medium-sized yards and I'm willing to say it's great for larger yards too. Additional notes: I compared it with my neighbors older 21" Greenworks Mower and there appears to be a lot of overlap. For example the batteries are the same physical size. I was able to power mine with his stage 3 battery and he was able to power his with the new stage 4 battery. The bags and the mulcher side shot was the same part, but the piece the blocks the bag was different from his and mine. The blades between the two looked identical and same with the housing for the blades. I think this is a good upgrade and if I owned his, I'd still upgrade for sure. There's a lot of creature comfort improvements that is worth the expense.

I’ve been using battery powered mowers for 6 to 7 years now, so I’m not new to the battery powered outdoor equipment. This mower is replacing a Ryobi battery powered mower and though it has been a good mower, this Greenworks mower is much better. For starters, the fact the Greenworks has a metal deck like a traditional mower makes it feel like a much better product. With the metal deck, I also get a much broader range of deck height. With my old mower I had to cut the grass on the second highest setting and with the Greenworks I use the second lowest with 5 additional settings left. This just gives me more flexibility if I don’t have time to cut the grass right away and it gets a little longer. I’ve got a fairly decent size yard, don’t know exact size but it’s between 1/4 to 1/3 of an acre (pics included). I’m able to cut the whole yard while using the self propelled feature about 30% of the time, maybe a little more. This is the same I got from my previous mower without self propelled. While using it, the Greenworks might have to ramp up power maybe 10% of the time while cutting the grass compared to about 50 to 60% for my old mower. The self propelled feature gives plenty of power and I’ve found right in the middle to be the perfect speed. It would have definitely been nice to have more than one battery, but it is nice it fully charges in an hour. Some people like the “environmental” aspect of using battery powered outdoor equipment, I personally like the fact I don’t have to worry about if I got gas for my equipment or not. Battery powered equipment keeps getting better and better and really your biggest expense will be an extra battery after purchase. This Greenworks mower gives you the performance of a gas powered mower with few if any compromises.

I've been fighting with my old ... "red" gasoline mower for the last two seasons. I've tried cleaning it, sharpening the blade, its self propelled mode just isn't what I recall it to be. I used to finish my yard 45m then clean up, being done in about an hour. More recently it's been taking more like 90m. My wife suggested I start earlier so I can be ready in 2h (grrr). She also pointed out that our neighbor has a corded electric and loves it. I pointed out that we have islands of bushes and gardens that they don't so for me having a cord seemed like such a hassle. She also pointed out that we have solar, so an electric mower would essentially be free (once paid for). Well I ventured off to my local home improvement store. And talked to a sales person, they essentially recommended one of two brands, but for battery life they thought I'd be most happy with Greenworks lawn mower. Too bad they didn't have any in stock, and it would take 2-3 weeks to get one delivered. Out came my phone and I found that my local BB not only carried them, they had them in stock. I'd made up my mind, so I promptly went home to consult with my wife. My first impression is they thought of just about everything, this mower can easily be converted from mulching, to side output to rear bagging. Second, what a big battery it has (see image next to a 6 pack of coke). But it also has a head light; I've always thought mowing as the sun is setting would be convenient. And except for riding mowers, push gasoline mowers just never seemed to have them (I know my "red" one didn't). And this greenworks Pro, makes it easy to adjust the wheels for cut height, easy to change the angle of the push arms, and easy to control the speed (more on that shortly). I'm guessing it's 40-50% lighter than my old "red" mower. The battery took about an hour to fully charge (charger has a fan which whirls while charging), when the whirling stops the battery is charged. Now what surprised me the most, my old red self propelled mower has one speed (not fast enough). This Greenworks pro offers multiple settings from "tortoise" mode (the slowest) to "jack rabbit" mode. In the fastest mode the mower will give you a bit of a workout. You're not exactly jogging, but more like speed walking, but if your hands fall off the speed controls you catch up immediately. So wanting a challenge I tried using it at full speed all the time; on straight sections, no problems, but when taking corners, full speed is just not possible (for me). Once you turn it on, the controls are pretty intuitive. You have to hold the start button down for a couple of seconds to get it to start, when starting the speed controls are disengaged (a smart safety procedure). In the battery compartment there is a plastic "key" that prevents use when the key is not in place. If you have kids that might "play" with... things, best to take this with you when you finish. Because this mower is so much lighter than my old mower, it kind of feels like it's pulling me along (especially up a slope). Once you get a feel for things it is quite comfortable to use. The back clippings bag is very easy to get on and off, I'd suggest not over filling. One thing to note is the handle on the bag is black. I first used it on a day that was about 100 out (in AZ, it's pretty normal), and the handle got pretty hot from the sun (more reason to mow at dusk). Well I finished in 35 minutes, next time I can probably get done in 30 (less learning to do). The battery indicator was only down to 50%. I didn't find out exactly how long they would last, but their 1 hour estimate seems about right. I did have to catch my breath a couple of times (but exercise is good, right?) The mower folds up very easily (the two green plastic cutouts on the arms, disengage the handle so it's easy to fold up. I'm so glad it has a full 21" cut path, some of the corded mowers are only 14" wide. This mower is very powerful for being battery powered, a good combination. I love the power of its self propulsion. I have nothing but praise for this current generation lawn mower; I wish I'd not delayed the purchase, on the other hand I'm glad to have this new 80 volt version.

I’ve used it three times. Battery is sufficient to cut front and back on one charge (1/4 acre) if I use the self propel sparingly. It’s a light mower so no issues. Powerful enough to cut through moderately long grass without issue. It has the Turbo button if extra power is needed (rarely use). It’s much quieter than my gas mower and folds up to store. Battery charges fast. I love no gas, no oil change, no worries.

This is my 3rd electric mower I've used over the last 15 years, but my first from Greenworks. It was, by far, the most powerful of the three and I was very pleased overall. I don't ever plan to go back to gas mowers as electric mowers require almost no maintenance and still do a great job. You don't have to worry about having a gas tank around, there's no oil to check/change, you don't have to yank/pull start the engine, etc. Pros: - All of the features you would want in a mower are present with an optional side chute, mulch plug, and rear bag. I always mulch where I live in Texas and this feature worked great for me with clippings being hardly visible when I was done. Before and after pictures of my latest mowing are attached. - The self-propelling feature comes in very handy since this mower is fairly heavy. There are a lot of twists and turns in my yard so getting a break on the straightaways was appreciated. It will take you about one mowing job to get comfortable with the controls. There is a learning curve with engaging/disengaging the self-propelling, but it is intuitive once you get used to it. - Battery life was very good and I love how fast it charges. I've found that the power from this lithium ion battery helps me cut taller grass and weeds than my last mower with a lead acid battery. My yard is average in size for a subdivision home at around a 1/4 acre. I can do the whole yard in one charge if I don't use the self-propel feature. The battery will drain much faster if you do. My ongoing plan is to mow my front yard, plug the battery in to top off the charge while I edge the front yard, then finish off the back yard with plenty of power to spare. The battery can charge in ~30 minutes so I don't see a need to buy a second battery. - Greenworks has an assortment of other lawn care devices that use the same battery so it can be multi-purpose. When I need to replace my current hedge-trimmers and edger I will likely go with Greenworks. Cons: - This mower is heavy compared to others I have used due to the sturdy metal frame. But that does help with durability. - The power plug on the charger arrived bent (see picture). This could be a quality control issue with how the mower is packaged as the battery and charger weren't very secure in the box and could have shuffled around during shipping. Luckily, I was able to bend it back with no damage and it worked fine. The box the mower arrived in had mild to moderate damage so I would suggest picking up in store if you have that option. The is the best electric mower I have used to date and highly recommend it!

After years of apartment living where yard maintenance was handled for me, buying my first home meant facing the reality of lawn care. As a single mom, I initially hired services, but finding reliable, quality work at a fair price became increasingly frustrating over the past year. That’s when I decided my kids and I would tackle our own yard maintenance – and wow, am I glad we did! I’ll be honest – gas-powered equipment and I have never been friends. The struggle to get them started, running out of fuel at the worst moments… it was always a headache. But this electric mower has completely changed my perspective on yard work! The self-propel feature is brilliantly designed. You can toggle it on and off, which I love because sometimes I want full control for detailed work around flower beds. Sure, even on the slowest setting it can feel zippy for precision work, but for those long stretches across the yard? It’s absolutely fantastic – and trust me, in California’s Central Valley summer heat, any help is welcome! What really impressed me was how practical this mower is for storage. The handlebars fold down completely, and it stores upright in such a compact footprint. Plus, it’s surprisingly lightweight once you get it out of the box – no more wrestling with heavy equipment. The battery life exceeded my expectations. I mowed both front and backyard (decent-sized lots) and still had charge remaining. No more mid-mow gas station runs or keeping extra fuel around! This purchase has inspired me to gradually replace all my yard tools with similar quality equipment. The reliability and convenience have been such a relief – no more Craigslist searches for yard services or dealing with no-shows. If you’re on the fence about making the switch to electric or taking on your own yard maintenance, I genuinely recommend giving this a try. It’s made what I thought would be a chore into something actually manageable and even a bit satisfying!

This is the best lawnmower. My brother originally purchased one for himself and one for my mother. I really like the idea of no gas, so when our mower stopped working after 20yrs I purchased one for my husband. 3 of our neighbors have also now purchased this mower. The 80V battery will last my husband almost the entire cut, but we do have a large yard. He swaps the battery with another battery from one of the many other Greenworks products we’ve purchased. This mower is also less quiet then gas mowers which is a plus. I wish the rest of my neighbors would purchase so I didn’t have to hear them mowing lol My husband also likes that you can stand this up to save space. He thought this was irrelevant when I brought it to his attention at first, but that’s one of the first things he tells anyone when talking about it. ha

A good mower with a solid ecosystem behind it.

The first thing to know about getting any battery-powered tools like this is that you are probably buying into an entire ecosystem of tools. It is a definite bonus to be able to have a bunch of tools that share the same batteries. This mower uses 80V batteries, so what other tools can you get that also use these same batteries? Well, Greenworks also has string trimmers, blowers, snow blowers, trimmers, and even chain saws. So potentially, if you buy more than one product, you can have more than one battery on hand to run everything. Or, if you have enough batteries, you can buy the tool only and save some money. This is why, when buying a tool like this, sticking with one brand can pay dividends. With that out of the way, this is my first time venturing into a battery-powered mower. My old gas-powered one was starting to break. The first impressions are that the quality is quite good. The body is plastic, and not metal like mowers of yore, but that seems to be the standard these days. This mower features a head light! I have never had a desire to mow at night, but I guess it is there if you need it. It does not cost much to add, and it takes very little battery power, so no harm. The motor is advertised as being brushless, which is a big bonus. Brushes are a major wear point on electric motors, so this should mean a longer service life. There is a safety key under the housing that covers the battery bay. Removing this means that the mower will not operate, which is a useful safety feature. Archaic mowers require a hard yank on a pull cord to get them to start, but electric ones can start with just the press of a button, so extra safety is good. The controls are easy and obvious. You pull on the safety handle and press the start button, starting up the mower. It shuts off as soon as you let go of the handle. Note that only one side needs to be held down, so you don’t need both hands. When hitting extra-thick grass, there is a turbo button. This model is also self-propelled! There are two paddles that, when one of them is activated, the unit drives itself. There is a slider that lets you adjust the speed. The battery claims up to 0.2 acres, which should be plenty for a quarter-acre lot suburban house. Recharges take about an hour, but you only get one battery. It also features the ability to fold the handle which allows the unit to sit vertically, only taking up around 18” of space. This is a nice touch. Note that the packaging also advertises that the unit produces a lot of torque even when the grass is thick. I didn’t have grass thick enough to test this out, but it makes sense. Gas mowers can get bogged down, and if the blade stops turning, you lose all power. But electric motors can output torque even when not moving. This is why a Tesla car only needs a single-speed gearbox and no torque converter. The height adjustment was also convenient, with only one lever that needed to be moved to adjust all four wheels. There are some things that are not quite flaws, but that I feel that I should mention. The first is that when storing the mower vertically, it takes up 18” only when in “mulch” mode. If you use the included rear bag to catch the clippings, then the bag sticks out when stored which takes up 30”. If space is at a premium, then stick to mulching. The only other complaint was that the included user manual was printed in some of the smallest text that I have seen. For people with aging eye, a larger manual would have been appreciated. When comparing the self-propelled feature to my previous gas-powered mower, my old mower had a “sliding” arrangement of the handle. The more the handle was pushed, the faster the wheels would spin. This means that the mower just kind of kept up with you. If you walk slow, it moves slow. If you stop, it stops. There was no need to think about how fast to set the speed, it just kept up with you. This mower, on the other hand, has paddles that need to be pulled in, and there is a separate speed control. So you have to manually adjust the speed to fit your needs. It still works and is a VERY appreciated feature, but it could have been implemented in an easier-to-use fashion. Still, this is a minor complaint. Overall, I am pleased.

So far, no issues. Has plenty of power and good battery life. I wouldn't try to mow through high thick weeds or rough brush. It's easy to set up and once your battery is charged, you're ready to go. It may seem like a plastic devise, but it is heavy. Very easy to store in a small space
