Customers regard H&R Block Deluxe + State Tax Software favorably for its ease of use, reasonable price, and accuracy. Many appreciate the ability to import data from previous years' returns. However, some users point out that e-filing state taxes requires an additional fee, and a few experienced challenges with software performance and compatibility.

I normally use the H&R Block online service rather than using the downloaded software, but decided to give the download a try this time. It definitely makes a difference. If you are already familiar with the user interface with the online service, there is almost no learning curve for this one. It runs incredibly fast compared to the online version, which is good if you have a lot of data to input. The only real complaint I have is that the forms for self-employment aren't very intuitive and take a bit to figure out, but that is more on the IRS having really confusing rules about self-employment and not so much anything H&R Block has control over. I may be a bit biased in my glowing review, I've been using H&R Block ever since I used it at the recommendation of a professor in a tax accounting class, and I will probably continue using exclusively H&R Block products unless they do something incredibly stupid in a future version.

This is the first time that I have used H&R Block software to do my taxes and I love it! I have always used Turbotax, but the H&R software is much easier to use with more conveniences. If you have never used tax software before it is extremely easy to set up an account and to get started. I love that you don't really have to enter that much information as long as you have access to your documents. You can import most of the information needed to complete your taxes by uploading or taking a picture of your tax documents. I have always worried that I entered the incorrect information from my tax forms, but with the H&R software all of those worries are gone. I also feel very confident that the software is asking me the correct questions to benefit my tax returns. If you have a question, you can either read more information about the topic or choose to speak to a representative through the software. The software is extremely user friendly that even if you aren't good with computers or have never used tax software, you will be able to complete your taxes without any problems. I would highly recommend H&R block tax software to complete your tax returns.

For anyone that's looking for an easy and quick way to do your own taxes with peace of mind this really is the way to go. It walks you through each tax form step-by-step and makes it easy to understand. If you get stuck (which I didn't) they are there to help and the online documentation is good to answer most questions. I was able to import W2 information and last year's filing information to make filing a breeze this year. In all, it took me about 20-25 minutes with a W2, 1099 and HSA account, not bad! The best part is the e-Filing is included with this version so you can file, and pay quick or get your refund started. If you're lucky enough to have a refund, there are multiple ways that H&R Block offers to help with that either by direct deposit, check or gift card for instant access to your refund. In short, definitely would recommend H&R Block to anyone that wants to take control of their own taxes, save some money and have confidence in being able to do it on your own. Going through it myself I can say it lived up to everything H&R Block promises!

(I received this software in exchange for my fair and unbiased review.) My household has been a user of a competing product for years, but being unhappy with it last year, we decided to try H&R Block’s deluxe package. Installation was easy enough - download the software from H&R Block’s website, install it on my computer (I went with the Windows version, but the macOS version looks identical), and enter your tax info. It was able to pull data from last year’s return completed by the competing software. Entering this year’s data (W-2, 1099, and others) was a snap. It did ask too many questions about income, however, including one about olympic sport winnings. Electronic filing of the federal was easy enough. We chose to mail in our state return as we owe Missouri some money, but e-file is an option. All in all, H&R Block worked well for us and was easy to use.

We own, have kids, contribute to a ROTH, itemize a bit when we can, and while SOME of our tax situations were a little different this year (served in a tax-free combat zone; one of us is a legal resident of a different state than where we live/maintain our home), we don't have a home business or own rental properties or anything like that. By and large, that's been our tax situation, minus home ownership, for nearly the past 20+ years. As such, we always tended to fall within the "mid-tier" offerings of typical home tax prep software programs. Now, since 1996, we've been using a competitor's product (the one with the big red checkmark) to file our taxes manually and online--no fuss, no muss, and so long as we had all our papers together, each year's returns took maybe 1-2 hours at most to complete. Over time, the process became more familiar, more of our banking and modest investment information was available online, but by and large, self-prepared taxes had actually become pretty routine. Enter the 2019 tax year and I decide to try my hand at H&R's product; not because I'm unhappy with the red checkmark after so many years, but I was curious if maybe the program carrying the big "H&R Block" name could do me any better. After a reasonably small download and trouble-free installation on my Win 10 laptop, what I was greeted with was a tight, easily navigable, user-friendly, and TOTALLY predictable user experience. As someone schooled in human-computer interface and user experience design, I can assure you that 'predictability' is not listed as a slight--the last thing you want when preparing your taxes is to be left wondering what to do next. This program guided me, let me explore, held my hand when it needed to, and ultimately dropped me off precisely where I needed to be with my Federal and State filings. What impressed me right away was that I could import my [competitor's] tax data either from a program save file (!!!) or just a big ol' PDF of the previous year's taxes. I was intrigued by the PDF import option because my 6 page return must have had 28 extra pages of analyses and worksheets, so I gave it a try to see what would happen. H&R Block Deluxe simply sucked in the PDFs, populated the data in every appliable page, and started me off on 2019's taxes as if I'd been using their product the whole time. And refreshingly so...I didn't have to correct a SINGLE entry! As for the experience itself, H&R Block provides inline tool tips and definitions for terms or actions on screen you're unclear of; gives you options to speak to a live person or check a series of FAQs and other references for answers you might be after; there were also direct navigation options (i.e. I need to enter some sales tax data for deductions) as well as a "guide me" feature that basically leads you on a natural language interview to gather and enter all the relevant forms or options necessary to prepare your taxes. The experience was straight-forward, with prompts to help assure you that some weird-sound questions only applied to a few individuals (i.e. "this is not common"), and a well-tuned, helpful tone that might put someone at ease while answering some questions that could start impacting that big number in the upper left indicating the size of the refund or debt owed to the government (i.e. "if you're unsure, check it anyway and we'll work on it together"--nice!). Once I was done with data entry, H&R Block ran an error check, found a few items that still needed to be fixed, and from there, I was on to filing and downloading the state forms to rinse and repeat. All in all, it took me WAY less than an hour to prepare my federal and state taxes. So now that I'm done, how did H&R Block stand up against the red checkmark? The funny thing is--the description I wrote above could just as easily have applied to ANY of the past several years I've filed my taxes electronically with a competitor's product. Is that a bad thing, not at all--I'd say H&R Block's interface is maybe a little less showy, slightly more "professional-feeling," but by and large, the user experience and end results were strikingly similar. But then I suppose there are really only so many ways you can ask someone questions to gather relevant data about who you are, your income, your deductions, and then run an error check before submitting your taxes based on the same underlying tax code. But remember, I was in this for the money. I've set up my withholdings so that we always get a modest refund. For grins, I decided to prepare my taxes on the other platform to see if H&R had found me any extra bank...or maybe unsettlingly so...if it DIDN'T find me as much as the competition did, or indicated that different forms would need to be filed for either Federal or State returns. First off--true to my words above, the same return on the competition's product took me exactly the same amount of time as they did with H&R Block; so there's no special sauce one way or another that lengthened or trimmed the prep time. But would our bank account be a little heavier this year? I'm sad to report that H&R Block didn't find me any more money for a refund than the checkmark did--it didn't come up with anything less either. Down to the penny, the results of H&R Block's tax software mirrored those produced by the competition. What that means to me is that you can count on H&R Block to find you what you're entitled to, or accurately indicate how much you're going to have to pay back, and you're not missing anything that might be revealed by the competition's similarly featured product. And in my opinion, the user experience and interfaces were so similar that it's essentially a wash between the two. In every meaningful way then, at least for a tax situation similar to ours, you can safely make your decision to purchase based pretty much on the value proposition alone. In that regard, H&R Block has produced a VERY reasonably priced package here that covers both Federal and State submission and makes the process speedy, painless, and reassuring. After more than a quarter of a century NOT using H&R Block, I have no reservations about returning to it again in the years to come, or recommending it for anyone needing to file their taxes today. Well done...

This is my second year using H&R Block's tax preparation tools, and I plan to continue using them in the future. The software downloaded quickly and asked if I would like to import my return from the previous year, saving me the time and effort of reentering basic personal information that has not changed. The program walks you through tax preparation step-by-step, asking questions to ensure that you submit everything required while maximizing your refund. Having used H&R Block's main competitor in years past I can say it operates much the same, but I have come to prefer H&R Block's offering.

I was skeptical at first because I have been using another software for over 10 years. I gave H&R a try and I was pleasantly surprised. I had to manually enter everything because I did not use my previous years material but manual entry was pretty easy. I had itemized deductions and it was pretty fast. My return showed up at the top left as I was entering all my info and changed according. Toggling between sections was easy too. I would recommend this product even for a seasoned person who does their own taxes for years.

A Great Choice For The Well-Informed Tax Preparer

This is H&R Block's mid-tier tax preparation software. You will be reminded of that immediately after you start because you have to decide for-or-against their up-sell before you can even begin your taxes. A little heavy-handed and obnoxious! I filed my taxes last year online and have PDF files of my federal and state returns. I was impressed that this software imported my information from last year flawlessly, even though my saved files contain title pages. The software indicated that I could import a saved tax file but would be unable to import a PDF file I created myself from a tax document - I cannot verify that. The software itself feels a little bit aloof - there do not seem to be any flaws or things that feel underdeveloped but the process of developing my tax forms feels very much like trudging through paper forms from the IRS. I did not feel like the software was truly guiding me or helping me consolidate my information. My taxes are fairly uncomplicated but I felt like getting through the data entry was a bit of a chore. As an example: the online software I used to file last year pulled my employer's information from their federal identification number - here I had to enter every piece of information manually - so I feel like I'm typing onto an electronic form with little help from the backside of the form. This is probably an excellent resource for tax preparers who are well-informed, especially those who have complicated taxes where they have worked out many of the details for years. While I was using the software, I felt like this was designed for the H&R Block professionals to use while I was paying them to do my taxes - I felt like it would be much more usable with a professional involved.

Having used e-filing for years from other sources, I was interested in trying HRB software and with high expectations. From my experience, I was expecting the software program to be easy to use, be somewhat intuitive, and guide me easily throughout the process. Initial set up of my profile was no problem, and entry of basic income sources was easy. However, when it came to 1099 Misc and 1099 Div from a foreign investment, it was a much different story. For an answer to my 1009 Misc issue, I called the help number. The person I reached could not answer the question, and he gave me the telephone number of a local HRB office. A call there easily got me exactly what I needed. Kudos on customer service. The foreign investment issue got me in a loop that took some work to get out of. Those items would have only been a minor annoyance, if I had not been able to easily enter those items in previous years. Also, one of my entries generated a pop-up suggesting a form (for a price) not included in the software program. I passed that by. Eventually, after much frustration, I reached the end. Because of this experience and curiosity, I tried another free program to compare process and return dollars expected. Following the clear guide, all my information was easily entered, my return dollars were a small amount higher, and both Federal and State e-filing were free. From start to finish (e-filing included) in well under an hour. If you only have basic income/deduction items for your tax filings, this HRB package is fine. However, I would not recommend it otherwise.

Tax software can be a bit challenging at times. H&R Block’s software was easy to download and install. Anyone can start a new return and import from your financial software. I am not an accountant and it walked me through each step where I felt very confident in the information I placed in the software. Filing is just as easy and installing the state tax add in was also easy. Absolutely the best I have ever used

Gets Taxes Done- No Issues, No Frills

Context: I've been a long time user (15+ years) of a competitor's tax software. That said, I have researched H&R Block almost every year as I looked for the best tax-time deal. With little in terms of stated functionality, price or reviews to differentiate the top competitors, I've generally stuck with the familiar. This year, I decided to switch things up. I've currently completed 2 of the 3 filings I'll do and have been satisfied with: the way the software works, the situations through which it guided me (e.g. self-employment taxes, sale of home, securities transactions, itemized deductions, etc.), and- most importantly- the sense of confidence I get from knowing that I don't have to know byzantine tax laws because the folks at H&R Block have me covered! Doing taxes is not everyone's idea of a good time, but the simple interview style of the process makes short work of what can be a taxing experience (pun intended). I rated 4 vs. 5 stars simply because of the look & feel of the interface itself. Functionally, I have no doubt it's doing all the same things as its competitors, but it has a slightly more "sterile" look. If I'd never used another product, I know I would have been perfectly satisfied, but I have.

Review for H&R Block - Deluxe + State Tax Software - Mac|Windows Tech Insider Network Review Easy to Download Easy to Use, but not as guided as other Tax Return Software. Other software tends to interview to prompt you along the way. H&R Block is still fine, it lists a table of questions and it is mostly up to you to know if that items applies to you. This is faster, if you know what you are doing. But, if you unsure about what to do or what has changed, you might want a more interactive experience. I also did not like it trying to upsell me more services or different versions before I even started using the software. It got the job done, I have no problem recommending the software. The only slight issue I had is that it was asking me for something, but had no help for this particular field. Instead the help was "check publication xyz for more information". It did not even link to the publication. Instead I had to google for the publication and try to figure it out on my own. SUMMARY: It got the job done, easy to use, I trust the results.

The title says PC/MAC yet my download code did not work for my Macbook Pro. In the past I did my taxes online exclusively, I took a chance to see how the software experience was and unfortunately, I could not validate since I was unable to get the downloader to download in a readable file for my mac. I processed my taxes again this year through their online version. My frustrations with downloading the software drove me to use their online version. H&R Block software continues to help me accurately file my taxes each year, the only reason this overall rating was that I could not use the digital download code to work on my Mac.
